    A method to extract slip system dependent information for crystal plasticity models

    A tool to implement a length scale dependency to classical crystal plasticity simulations is presented. Classical crystal plasticity models do not include a size effect; therefore, the size of the grain does not influence the simulated deformation. Classical crystal plasticity advancements have been through the inclusion of stress or strain gradient based constitutive models to improve the simulation of length scale dependent deformation. However, this tool presents an alternative to implementing a length scale, where the influence of slip pile-up in the form of dislocations at grain boundaries as a potential to explaining the Hall-Petch effect in materials. This is achieved by calculating the slip distance in adjacent grains for each slip system, by assuming the total slip length spans the grain in the slip direction. These calculations can occur in two ways. The first is the analysis occurs at the start of the simulation, therefore, only occurs once. If this approach is used, the computational cost of this tool is minute. However, if the simulations consider large deformations, during which it is expected that the grains are going to undergo large rotations, then it would be advantageous to the have the tool recalculate the information during the analysis. Consequently, the computational cost would depend on the resolution of the modelled geometry, the number of grains, and the number of slip systems. The tool also provides a capability to develop constitutive models based on complex grain boundary features which can be implemented in classical crystal plasticity models and gradient based crystal plasticity models. The described calculation process is implemented through a Fortran subroutine, which has been designed to be easily used in crystal plasticity simulations. The presented tool also includes Python code designed to link with microstructures built using DREAM.3D to extract the required input data to the Fortran subroutine. The proposed tool is not limited to classical crystal plasticity formulations, instead the data extracted and outputted from the Fortran subroutine can be used to serve alternative purposes in both stress and strain gradient crystal plasticity models. The proposed tool can be modified to extract additional data to that presented. The slip distance in the adjacent grain, the distance from the grain boundary of the current calculation point, and the interaction between slip systems between grains can be used in any crystal plasticity constitutive models

    Equine Rhinitis A Virus and Its Low pH Empty Particle: Clues Towards an Aphthovirus Entry Mechanism?

    Equine rhinitis A virus (ERAV) is closely related to foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), belonging to the genus Aphthovirus of the Picornaviridae. How picornaviruses introduce their RNA genome into the cytoplasm of the host cell to initiate replication is unclear since they have no lipid envelope to facilitate fusion with cellular membranes. It has been thought that the dissociation of the FMDV particle into pentameric subunits at acidic pH is the mechanism for genome release during cell entry, but this raises the problem of how transfer across the endosome membrane of the genome might be facilitated. In contrast, most other picornaviruses form ‘altered’ particle intermediates (not reported for aphthoviruses) thought to induce membrane pores through which the genome can be transferred. Here we show that ERAV, like FMDV, dissociates into pentamers at mildly acidic pH but demonstrate that dissociation is preceded by the transient formation of empty 80S particles which have released their genome and may represent novel biologically relevant intermediates in the aphthovirus cell entry process. The crystal structures of the native ERAV virus and a low pH form have been determined via highly efficient crystallization and data collection strategies, required due to low virus yields. ERAV is closely similar to FMDV for VP2, VP3 and part of VP4 but VP1 diverges, to give a particle with a pitted surface, as seen in cardioviruses. The low pH particle has internal structure consistent with it representing a pre-dissociation cell entry intermediate. These results suggest a unified mechanism of picornavirus cell entry

    Applied utility and the auto-ethnographic short story: persuasions for, and illustrations of, writing critical social science

    In some quarters it is argued that, narrative researchers might be classified as being either storyanalysts or storytellers. They go on to suggest that one feature of storytellers is that they undertake a form of analysis as the process of writing unfolds. With these sentiments in mind, in the present paper, we consider how auto-ethnographical accounts of traumatic and challenging life events might, through the analysis contained within, demonstrate value within the realm of applied pedagogy. In making our case we embrace and adapt the literary genre of storytelling, more specifically, the short story. The story presented here, ‘Travel Writer’, offers an opaque, multicontextualised and lifelong view of career transition. The present paper, in more general terms, considers the capacity of auto-ethnography and, more specifically, the short storied version of it, to engender critical reader engagement, to encourage personal reflection in others, and to act as a point of stimulus for the enactment of applied debate through the lens of critical social science. With regards to the assumptions of critical social science, the final discussion also considers how the auto-ethnographic text, as a pedagogic tool, might help others to contest and challenge the meta-narratives that, we argue, risk stagnating established thinking

    Reflecting back and forwards: The ebb and flow of peer-reviewed reflective practice research in sport

    Researchers in sport have claimed that reflective practice is important for competent practice. Evidence supporting this claim is sparse, highly theoretical and located within a variety of domains. The aim of this study was to assimilate and analyse the last 12 years of reflective practice literature within the sport domain in order to identify new areas of inquiry, emerging trends with regard to findings or methodology, and to identify implications for future research and practice. A sample of 68 papers published between 2001 and 2012 was examined, and investigated for the research locations, data collection methods utilised, and the professions and communities involved. The paper concludes with some suggestions for future research
