    Over the past half century, the structure of agriculture has been marked by change. Since little was known about these changes. Secretary Bergland initiated an inquiry into the forces that produced them. One area examined was Federal tax policy. While the theoretical and empirical tax work was not in final form by the summer of 1980, several major themes had emerged from it. They were largely consistent with prior theoretical work. To test them against practical experience, the Department of Agriculture asked five of the Nation\u27s most prominent and skilled farm tax practitioners and commentators to prepare papers on tax policy structure

    This research seeks to understand the meaning behind Paul\u27s words in 1 Corinthians 14:31-35. Paul\u27s direct command, women should keep silent, seems quite clear on paper, but more context is needed when contemporary churches decide how to apply these words. This article examines three theories: the passage being a rebuttal, the passage being an interpolation, and the passage having significant cultural context. After reviewing the three theories, the proposed interpretation is that Paul\u27s command was to a specific people in one particular cultural context, not a universal command for all churches of all generations

    HUMAN GROWTH CURVE

    The human growth curve shows two (and only two) outstanding periods of accelerated growth—the circumnatal and the adolescent. The circumnatal growth cycle attains great velocity, which reaches a maximum at the time of birth. The curve of this cycle is best fitted by a theoretical skew curve of Pearson's Type I. It has a theoretical range of 44 months and a standard deviation of 5.17 months. The modal velocity is 10.2 kilos per year. The adolescent growth cycle has less maximum velocity and greater range in time than the circumnatal cycle. The best fitting theoretical curve is a normal frequency curve ranging over about 10 years with a standard deviation of about 21 months and a modal velocity of 4.5 kilos per year. The two great growth accelerations are superimposed on a residual curve of growth which measures a substratum of growth out of which the accelerations arise. This probably extends from conception to 55 years, on the average. It is characterized by low velocity, averaging about 2 kilos per year from 2 to 12 years. It is interpreted as due to many growth operations coincident or closely blending in time. Our curve shows no third marked period of acceleration at between the 3rd and 6th years. The total growth in weight of the body is the sum of the weight of its constituent organs. In some cases these keep pace with the growth of the body as a whole; great accelerations of body growth are due to great accelerations in growth of the constituent organs. In other cases one of the organs of the body (like the thymus gland) may undergo a change in weight that is not in harmony with that of the body as a whole. The development of the weight in man is the resultant of many more or less elementary growth processes. These result in two special episodes of growth and numerous smaller, blending, growth operations. Hypotheses are suggested as to the basis of the special growth accelerations

    Role of HIV-1 and Bacteremia Co-infection in Promoting Inflammatory Mediator production in Kenyan Children with Severe Malarial Anemia

    Severe anemia is the primary outcome of childhood malaria in holoendemic malaria transmission regions such as western Kenya. HIV-1 and bacteremia are equally important diseases in Kenyan children. Anemia is also the hallmark trait of pediatric HIV-1 infection, and despite our previous reports of exacerbated anemia in malaria/HIV-1 co-infected childrena, we also observed significantly lower parasitemias without worsening anemia in malaria/bacteremia co-infected children. Abundant production of pro-inflammatory cytokines is known to adversely affect erythropoiesis and is common to malaria, HIV-1, and bacteremia. As such, we performed a comprehensive bead-based 25-plex Multiplex assay to identify cytokines patterns and profiles associated with negative and positive hematolgic outcomes in co-infected children. Children in Aims 1 and 2 infected with P. falciparum malaria (Pf[+], aged 3-36 mos., n=542) were stratified into three groups: HIV-1 negative (HIV-1[-]/Pf[+]); HIV-1 exposed (HIV-1[exp]/Pf[+]); and HIV-1 infected (HIV-1[+]/Pf[+]). In Aim 3, malaria and bacteremia co-infected children (n=192) were divided into three categories: malaria alone, Pf[+]; Gram negative bacteremia/malaria co-infected, G[-]/Pf[+]; and Gram positive bacteremia/malaria co-infected, G[+]/Pf[+]. Univariate, correlational, and hierarchical regression analyses were used to determine differences among the groups and to define predictors of worsening anemia. Aim 1 analyses revealed HIV-1[+]/Pf[+] children had significantly more malarial pigment-containing neutrophils (PCN), monocytosis, increased severe anemia (Hb<6.0g/dL), and ~10-fold greater mortality. Hierarchical multiple regression revealed that worsening anemia was associated with elevated pigment-containing monocytes, younger age, and increasing HIV-1 status (HIV-1[-]→HIV-1[exp]→HIV-1[+]). Aim 2, addressing the inflammatory milieu, demonstrated that exacerbated anemia was associated with inflammatory mediator (IM) dysregulation, but not parasitemic or erythropoietic indices. A principal component analysis revealed that IL-12 was the most influential variable on Hb levels in HIV-1[+]/Pf[+] children, while the IL-1β:IL-10 ratio was most influenced by PCN. In Aim 3, both bacteremia co-infected groups had lower parasitemia compared to the Pf[+] group. A multiple mediation model examining IMs responsible for decreased parasitemia in the bacteremia co-infected groups identified IL-4, IL-10, IL-12, and IFN-γ as the key molecules in decreasing parasitemia. Thus, malaria/HIV-1 co-infection is defined by significantly enhanced anemia that is associated with unique IM profiles known to exacerbate anemia, while enhanced immune activation in malaria/bacteremia co-infected children appears to promote reduced parasitemia without adversely affecting anemia outcomes. By defining the inflammatory milieu associated with severe anemia, therapies can be developed to mitigate detrimental immune responses, thereby lessening the pediatric public health burden in western Kenya

    Using Discrete Event Simulation to Examine Marine Training at the Marine Corps Communication-Electronics School

Barton, eds.This paper presents a discrete-event simulation model used to explore various possibilities for improving the training continuum at the Marine Corps Communication- Electronics School. The goal of the analysis is to reduce the average waiting time experienced by Marines as they wait for their formal training to commence. Results show that the implementation of even the least beneficial of these improvements yields a 37 percent reduction in waiting time. The best single change yields an 82 percent reduction. This translates into a 30 day reduction in average waiting time per Marine. If all improvements were implemented, a reduction of 88 percent could be achieved, bringing the average waiting time per Marine down to less than 5 days
