    A non-main-sequence secondary in SY Cancri

    Simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observations of the Z Cam type dwarf nova SY Cancri were used to obtain absolute flux calibrations. A comparison of the photometric calibration with a wide slit spectrophotometric calibration showed that either method is equally satisfactory. A radial velocity study of the secondary star, made using the far red NaI doublet, yielded a mass ratio q = 0.68; this is very different from the value of 1.13 quoted in the literature. Using the new lower mass ratio, and constraining the mass of the white dwarf to be within reasonable limits, then leads to a mass for the secondary star that is substantially less than would be expected for its orbital period if it satisfied a main-sequence mass-radius relationship. We find a spectral type of M0 that is consistent with that expected for a main-sequence star of the low mass we have found. However, in order to fill its Roche lobe, the secondary must be significantly larger than a main sequence star of that mass and spectral type.     Electronic properties of buried hetero-interfaces of LaAlO3 on SrTiO3

    We have made very thin films of LaAlO3 on TiO2 terminated SrTiO3 and have measured the properties of the resulting interface in various ways. Transport measurements show a maximum sheet carrier density of 1016 cm-2 and a mobility around 104 cm2 V-1 s-1. In situ ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) indicates that for these samples a finite density of states exists at the Fermi level. From the oxygen pressure dependence measured in both transport as well as the UPS, we detail, as reported previously by us, that oxygen vacancies play an important role in the creation of the charge carriers and that these vacancies are introduced by the pulsed laser deposition process used to make the heterointerfaces. Under the conditions studied the effect of LaAlO3 on the carrier density is found to be minimal.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure

    Non-Abelian bosonization of the frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain

    We study the spin-1/2 chain with nearest neighbor (κ1\kappa_1) and next-nearest neighbor (κ2\kappa_2) interactions in the regime κ2κ1\kappa_2\gg \kappa_1, which is equivalent to two chains with a `zig-zag' interaction. In the continuum limit, this system is described in term of two coupled level-1 WZW field theories. We illustrate its equivalence with four off-critical Ising models (Majorana fermions). This description is used to investigate the opening of a gap as a function of κ1\kappa_1 and the associated spontaneous breakdown of parity. We calculate the dynamic spin structure factor near the wavevectors accessible to the continuum limit. We comment on the nonzero string order parameter and show the presence of a hidden Z2×Z2{\Bbb Z}_2\times{\Bbb Z}_2 symmetry via a nonlocal transformation on the microscopic Hamiltonian. For a ferromagnetic interchain coupling, the model is conjectured to be critical, with different velocities for the spin singlet and spin triplet excitations.Comment: 20 pages, RevTeX, 1 postscript figure.     Deriving a multivariate CO-to-H2_2 conversion function using the [CII]/CO(1-0) ratio and its application to molecular gas scaling relations

    We present Herschel PACS observations of the [CII] 158 micron emission line in a sample of 24 intermediate mass (9<logM_\ast/M_\odot<10) and low metallicity (0.4< Z/Z_\odot<1.0) galaxies from the xCOLD GASS survey. Combining them with IRAM CO(1-0) measurements, we establish scaling relations between integrated and molecular region [CII]/CO(1-0) luminosity ratios as a function of integrated galaxy properties. A Bayesian analysis reveals that only two parameters, metallicity and offset from the star formation main sequence, Δ\DeltaMS, are needed to quantify variations in the luminosity ratio; metallicity describes the total dust content available to shield CO from UV radiation, while Δ\DeltaMS describes the strength of this radiation field. We connect the [CII]/CO luminosity ratio to the CO-to-H2_2 conversion factor and find a multivariate conversion function αCO\alpha_{CO}, which can be used up to z~2.5. This function depends primarily on metallicity, with a second order dependence on Δ\DeltaMS. We apply this to the full xCOLD GASS and PHIBSS1 surveys and investigate molecular gas scaling relations. We find a flattening of the relation between gas mass fraction and stellar mass at logM_\ast/M_\odot<10. While the molecular gas depletion time varies with sSFR, it is mostly independent of mass, indicating that the low LCO_{CO}/SFR ratios long observed in low mass galaxies are entirely due to photodissociation of CO, and not to an enhanced star formation efficiency.Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, this version after referee comments. 21 page

    The disc-shaped compact tension (DCT) fracture energy test has been shown to discriminate between asphalt mixtures with respect to their thermal cracking potential. This research refines the DCT fracture energy testing procedure, identifies needed adjustments in asphalt mixture to increase fracture energy, determines the suitability of DCT-test-based parameters as indicators of reflective cracking, and proposes threshold values to lower the potential for premature reflective cracking in asphalt overlays. A number of recommendations have been developed to implement outcomes of this research as well as to fill knowledge gaps identified through this study

    Acute Reperfusion Therapy in ST-elevation Myocardial Infarction from 1994-2003

    Background—Appropriate utilization of acute reperfusion therapy is not a national performance measure for ST-elevation myocardial infarction at this time, and the extent of its contemporary use among ideal patients is unknown. Methods—From the National Registry of Myocardial Infarction, we identified 238,291 patients enrolled from June 1994 to May 2003 who were ideally suited for acute reperfusion therapy with fibrinolytic therapy or primary percutaneous coronary intervention. We determined rates of not receiving therapy across 3 time periods (June 1994–May 1997, June 1997–May 2000, June 2000– May 2003) and evaluated factors associated with underutilization. Results—The proportion of ideal patients not receiving acute reperfusion therapy decreased by one-half throughout the past decade (time period 1: 20.6%; time period 2: 11.4%; time period 3: 11.6%; P\u3c0.001). Utilization remained significantly lower in key subgroups in the most recent time period: those without chest pain (OR, 0.29; 95% CI, 0.27–0.32); those presenting 6 to 12 hours after symptom onset (OR, 0.57; 95% CI, 0.52–0.61); those 75 years or older (OR, 0.63 compared with patients \u3c55 years old; 95% CI, 0.58–0.68); women (OR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.84–0.93); and non-whites (OR, 0.90; 95% CI, 0.83–0.97). Conclusions—Utilization of acute reperfusion therapy in ideal patients has improved over the last decade, but more than 10% remain untreated. Measuring and improving its use in this cohort represents an important opportunity to improve care

    Large-scale structure in the Lyman-alpha forest II: analysis of a group of ten QSOs

    The spatial distribution of Ly-alpha forest absorption systems towards ten QSOs has been analysed to search for large-scale structure over the redshift range 2.2 < z < 3.4. The QSOs form a closely spaced group on the sky and are concentrated within a 1 deg^2 field. We have employed a technique based on the first and second moments of the transmission probability density function which is capable of identifying and assessing the significance of regions of over- or underdense Ly-alpha absorption. We find evidence for large-scale structure in the distribution of Ly-alpha forest absorption at the > 99 per cent confidence level. In individual spectra we find overdense Ly-alpha absorption on scales of up to 1200 km s^-1. There is also strong evidence for correlated absorption across line of sight pairs separated by < 3 h^-1 proper Mpc (q_0 = 0.5).     Novel causative mutations in patients with Nance-Horan syndrome and altered localization of the mutant NHS-A protein isoform

    PURPOSE: Nance-Horan syndrome is typically characterized by severe bilateral congenital cataracts and dental abnormalities. Truncating mutations in the Nance-Horan syndrome (NHS) gene cause this X-linked genetic disorder. NHS encodes two isoforms, NHS-A and NHS-1A. The ocular lens expresses NHS-A, the epithelial and neuronal cell specific isoform. The NHS-A protein localizes in the lens epithelium at the cellular periphery. The data to date suggest a role for this isoform at cell-cell junctions in epithelial cells. This study aimed to identify the causative mutations in new patients diagnosed with Nance-Horan syndrome and to investigate the effect of mutations on subcellular localization of the NHS-A protein. METHODS: All coding exons of NHS were screened for mutations by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. PCR-based mutagenesis was performed to introduce three independent mutations in the NHS-A cDNA. Expression and localization of the mutant proteins was determined in mammalian epithelial cells. RESULTS: Truncating mutations were found in 6 out of 10 unrelated patients from four countries. Each of four patients carried a novel mutation (R248X, P264fs, K1198fs, and I1302fs), and each of the two other patients carried two previously reported mutations (R373X and R879X). No mutation was found in the gene in four patients. Two disease-causing mutations (R134fs and R901X) and an artificial mutation (T1357fs) resulted in premature truncation of the NHS-A protein. All three mutant proteins failed to localize to the cellular periphery in epithelial cells and instead were found in the cytoplasm. CONCLUSIONS: This study brings the total number of mutations identified in NHS to 18. The mislocalization of the mutant NHS-A protein, revealed by mutation analysis, is expected to adversely affect cell-cell junctions in epithelial cells such as the lens epithelium, which may explain cataractogenesis in Nance-Horan syndrome patients. Mutation analysis also shed light on the significance of NHS-A regions for its localization and, hence, its function at epithelial cell junctions.Shiwani Sharma, Kathryn P.     The Very Young Type Ia Supernova 2013dy: Discovery, and Strong Carbon Absorption in Early-Time Spectra

    The Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2013dy in NGC 7250 (d ~ 13.7 Mpc) was discovered by the Lick Observatory Supernova Search. Combined with a prediscovery detection by the Italian Supernova Search Project, we are able to constrain the first-light time of SN 2013dy to be only 0.10 +/- 0.05 d (2.4 +/- 1.2 hr) before the first detection. This makes SN 2013dy the earliest known detection of an SN Ia. We infer an upper limit on the radius of the progenitor star of R_0 < 0.25 R_sun, consistent with that of a white dwarf. The light curve exhibits a broken power law with exponents of 0.88 and then 1.80. A spectrum taken 1.63 d after first light reveals a C II absorption line comparable in strength to Si II. This is the strongest C II feature ever detected in a normal SN Ia, suggesting that the progenitor star had significant unburned material. The C II line in SN 2013dy weakens rapidly and is undetected in a spectrum 7 days later, indicating that C II is detectable for only a very short time in some SNe Ia. SN 2013dy reached a B-band maximum of M_B = -18.72 +/- 0.03 mag ~17.7 d after first light.Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJ Letter

    Quinstant Dark Energy Predictions for Structure Formation

    We explore the predictions of a class of dark energy models, quinstant dark energy, concerning the structure formation in the Universe, both in the linear and non-linear regimes. Quinstant dark energy is considered to be formed by quintessence and a negative cosmological constant. We conclude that these models give good predictions for structure formation in the linear regime, but fail to do so in the non-linear one, for redshifts larger than one.Comment: 9 pages, 14 figures, "Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Science
