Tight Bounds for MIS in Multichannel Radio Networks
Daum et al. [PODC'13] presented an algorithm that computes a maximal
independent set (MIS) within
rounds in an -node multichannel radio network with communication
channels. The paper uses a multichannel variant of the standard graph-based
radio network model without collision detection and it assumes that the network
graph is a polynomially bounded independence graph (BIG), a natural
combinatorial generalization of well-known geographic families. The upper bound
of that paper is known to be optimal up to a polyloglog factor.
In this paper, we adapt algorithm and analysis to improve the result in two
ways. Mainly, we get rid of the polyloglog factor in the runtime and we thus
obtain an asymptotically optimal multichannel radio network MIS algorithm. In
addition, our new analysis allows to generalize the class of graphs from those
with polynomially bounded local independence to graphs where the local
independence is bounded by an arbitrary function of the neighborhood radius.Comment: 37 pages, to be published in DISC 201
Development of an experimental 10 T Nb3Sn dipole magnet for the CERN LHC
An experimental 1-m long twill aperture dipole magnet developed using a high-current Nb3Sn conductor in order to attain a magnetic field well beyond 10 T at 4.2 K is described. The emphasis in this Nb3Sn project is on the highest possible field within the known Large Hadron Collider (LHC) twin-aperture configuration. A design target of 11.5 T was chosen
CP and T violation test in neutrino oscillation
We examine how large violation of CP and T is allowed in long base line
neutrino experiments. When we attribute only the atmospheric neutrino anomaly
to neutrino oscillation we may have large CP violation effect. When we
attribute both the atmospheric neutrino anomaly and the solar neutrino deficit
to neutrino oscillation we may have a sizable T violation effect proportional
to the ratio of two mass differences; it is difficult to see CP violation since
we can't ignore the matter effect. We give a simple expression for T violation

The influence of the geomagnetic field and of the uncertainties in the primary spectrum on the development of the muon flux in the atmosphere
In this paper we study the sensitivity of the flux of atmospheric muons to
uncertainties in the primary cosmic ray spectrum and to the treatment of the
geomagnetic field in a calculation. We use the air shower simulation program
AIRES to make the calculation for two different primary spectra and under
several approximations to the propagation of charged particles in the
geomagnetic field. The results illustrate the importance of accurate modelling
of the geomagnetic field effects. We propose a high and a low fit of the proton
and helium fluxes, and calculate the muon fluxes with these different inputs.
Comparison with measurements of the muon flux by the CAPRICE experiment shows a
slight preference for the higher primary cosmic ray flux parametrization.Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.

A National Survey of Skin Infections, Care Behaviors and MRSA Knowledge in the United States
A nationally representative sample of approximately 2000 individuals was surveyed to assess SSTI infections over their lifetime and then prospectively over six-months. Knowledge of MRSA, future likelihood to self-treat a SSTI and self-care behaviors was also queried. Chi square tests, linear and multinomial regression were used for analysis. About 50% of those with a reported history of a SSTI typical of MRSA had sought medical treatment. MRSA knowledge was low: 28% of respondents could describe MRSA. Use of protective self-care behaviors that may reduce transmission, such as covering a lesion, differed with knowledge of MRSA and socio-demographics. Those reporting a history of a MRSA-like SSTI were more likely to respond that they would self-treat than those without such a history (OR 2.05 95% CI 1.40, 3.01; p<0.001). Since half of respondents reported not seeking care for past lesions, incidence determined from clinical encounters would greatly underestimate true incidence. MRSA knowledge was not associated with seeking medical care, but was associated with self-care practices that may decrease transmission.</p
The KARMEN Time Anomaly: Search for a Neutral Particle of Mass 33.9 MeV in Pion Decay
We have searched for the pion decay pi^+ --> mu^+ X, where X is a neutral
particle of mass 33.905 MeV. This process was suggested by the KARMEN
Collaboration to explain an anomaly in their observed time distribution of
neutrino induced reactions. Having measured the muon momentum spectrum of
charged pions decaying in flight, we find no evidence for this process and
place an upper limit on the branching fraction eta leq 6.0 * 10^{-10} of such a
decay at a 95% confidence level.Comment: 17 pages including 4 for figure
Semantic Enrichment for Building Information Modeling: Procedure for Compiling Inference Rules and Operators for Complex Geometry
Semantic enrichment of building models adds meaningful domain-specific or application-specific information to a digital building model. It is applicable to solving interoperability problems and to compilation of models from point cloud data. The SeeBIM (Semantic Enrichment Engine for BIM) prototype software encapsulates domain expert knowledge in computer readable rules for inference of object types, identity and aggregation of systems. However, it is limited to axis-aligned bounding box geometry and the adequacy of its rule-sets cannot be guaranteed. This paper solves these drawbacks by (1) devising a new procedure for compiling inference rule sets that are known a priori to be adequate for complete and thorough classification of model objects, and (2) enhancing the operators to compute complex geometry and enable precise topological rule processing. The procedure for compiling adequate rule sets is illustrated using a synthetic concrete highway bridge model. A real-world highway bridge model, with 333 components of 13 different types and compiled from a laser scanned point cloud, is used to validate the approach and test the enhanced SeeBIM system. All of the elements are classified correctly, demonstrating the efficacy of the approach to semantic enrichment
