    Spin observables for pion photoproduction on the deuteron in the Δ\Delta(1232)-resonance region

    Spin observables for the three charge states of the pion for the pion photoproduction reaction on the deuteron, Îłd→πNN\gamma d\to\pi NN, with polarized photon beam and/or oriented deuteron target are predicted. For the beam-target double-spin asymmetries, it is found that only the longitudinal asymmetries T20ℓT_{20}^{\ell} and T2±2ℓT_{2\pm 2}^{\ell} do not vanish, whereas all the circular and the other longitudinal asymmetries do vanish. The sensitivity of spin observables to the model deuteron wave function is investigated. It has been found that only T21T_{21} and T22T_{22} are sensitive to the model deuteron wave function, in particular in the case of π0\pi^0-production above the Δ\Delta-region, and that other asymmetries are not.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in J.     Polarization observables of the gamma d --> PiNN reaction in the Delta(1232)-resonance region

    Polarization observables of the three charge states of the pion for the Îłd→πNN\gamma d\to\pi NN reaction with polarized photon beam and/or oriented deuteron target are evaluated over the whole Δ\Delta(1232)-resonance region adopting a nonrelativistic model based on time-ordered perturbation theory. Results for the π\pi-meson spectra, linear photon asymmetry, vector and tensor target asymmetries are presented. Particular attention is given, for the first time, to double polarization asymmetries for which we present results for T20ℓT_{20}^{\ell} and T2±2ℓT_{2\pm 2}^{\ell}.     Palm Ash as a Pozzolanic Material for Portland Cement Pastes

    The effect of the substitution of palm ash (PA) on the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of Portland cement pastes (OPC) was clearly evaluated. Results showed that as the PA content increased, the fineness as well as the heat of hydration of the whole mix increased too.  The water of consistency (WC) and set times (ST) decreased with the increase of PA content due to the presence of the water reducing admixture. The bound water content (BWn), bulk density (BD) and compressive strength (CS) improved and enhanced up to 20 % PA content, and then decreased onward at all hydration periods, while the total porosity decreased and then increased. Above 20 % PA content, all properties were adversely affected. The free lime content (FLn) of the OPC increased continuously up to 90 days, but decreased with PA content. The FTIR spectra illustrated that there is a large amount of free lime content with P0 (OPC), but it gradually decreased with PA content. The SEM microscopy demonstrated the formation of ettringite phase and aggregates of CSH in addition to free lime.     Polymorphism of growth hormone gene and its association with wool traits in Egyptian sheep breeds

    Growth hormone (GH) gene has been described as a candidate gene for marker-assisted selection in different farm animals. The present study was designed to identify the polymorphism in GH gene and its association with variation of wool traits in Egyptian sheep breeds. Wool and blood samples were collected from 42 animals including two breeds (Barki and Rahmani) and one crossbred (Rahmani x Awase). Measurements of wool traits were analyzed and involved staple strength (Str), staple length (STL), fiber diameter (FD) and clean fleece yield (CFW). DNA was extracted from blood samples and a 365-bp fragment from exon V was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Single strand conformation polymorphisim (SSCP) analysis showed two conformational patterns. The pattern I was recorded to be more frequent (83.3, 92.86 and 90%) than pattern II (16.7, 7.14 and 10%) in Barki, Rahmani and crossbred, respectively. The sequence analysis showed one single nucleotide polymorphism (C/T). The pattern I (allele T) has been found to affect CFW and FD than pattern II (allele C). Whereas, C allele was more pronounced for Str and STL. These traits are the most important parameters determining commercial values of wool that are preferred for clothing or carpets industry. The nucleotide sequences of C and T alleles were submitted to GenBank and have the accession numbers: KT250511 and KT250512, respectively. In conclusion, the present results provide evidence that there is a single nucleotide polymorphism within GH gene in Egyptian sheep breeds. This mutation was found to have some effects on wool traits.     Effect of extreme low and high temperatures on the almond moth, Ephestia cautella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

    he different immature stages of the almond moth, Ephestia cautella (Walker) were exposed to low temperature of -5ÂșC for different exposure times. Exposure of eggs to 240 to 360 minutes is sufficient to achieve 100% mortality for this stage. Exposed early larval instar to -5ÂșC for 180 minutes is sufficient to achieve 100% mortality. Exposure of the late larval instars to 300 and/or 360 minutes is effective to achieve a complete mortality for the late larval instars of the pest. The calculated LT50 and LT95 were 113.73 and 208.64 minutes. Exposure of pupae to 300 minutes or more is effective to get a complete mortality for the pupal stage. High temperatures of 45Âș, 50Âș, 55Âș and 60ÂșC were tested against egg, late larval instars and pupal stages of E. cautella. Mortality tended to be increased with the increasing of temperature and exposure time. Exposure time for more than one hour at 45ÂșC, 15 minutes at 50ÂșC and 10 minutes at 55ÂșC were more effective and led to more than 95% mortality for the egg stage of E. cautella. Exposure of the late larval instars for more than 97.22, 72.17, 17.65 minutes at 45, 50 and 55ÂșC is sufficient to achieve more than 95% mortality for the late larval instars as indicated by LT95 values. Exposing the pupae to 25 minutes at high temperatures of 50ÂșC and to 15 minutes at 55ÂșC is an effective to get complete mortality for the pupal stage. Thus exposure times for more than 90 minutes at high temperature of 45ÂșC; 33 minutes at 50ÂșC and/or 11.67 minutes at 55ÂșC were more effective to achieve more than 95% mortality of the pupal stage of E. cautella.

    Novel microwell-based spectrophotometric assay for determination of atorvastatin calcium in its pharmaceutical formulations

    The formation of a colored charge-transfer (CT) complex between atorvastatin calcium (ATR-Ca) as a n-electron donor and 2, 3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ) as a π-electron acceptor was investigated, for the first time. The spectral characteristics of the CT complex have been described, and the reaction mechanism has been proved by computational molecular modeling. The reaction was employed in the development of a novel microwell-based spectrophotometric assay for determination of ATR-Ca in its pharmaceutical formulations. The proposed assay was carried out in 96-microwell plates. The absorbance of the colored-CT complex was measured at 460 nm by microwell-plate absorbance reader. The optimum conditions of the reaction and the analytical procedures of the assay were established. Under the optimum conditions, linear relationship with good correlation coefficient (0.9995) was found between the absorbance and the concentration of ATR-Ca in the range of 10-150 ÎŒg/well. The limits of detection and quantitation were 5.3 and 15.8 ÎŒg/well, respectively. No interference was observed from the additives that are present in the pharmaceutical formulation or from the drugs that are co-formulated with ATR-Ca in its combined formulations. The assay was successfully applied to the analysis of ATR-Ca in its pharmaceutical dosage forms with good accuracy and precision. The assay described herein has great practical value in the routine analysis of ATR-Ca in quality control laboratories, as it has high throughput property, consumes minimum volume of organic solvent thus it offers the reduction in the exposures of the analysts to the toxic effects of organic solvents, and reduction in the analysis cost by 50-fold. Although the proposed assay was validated for ATR-Ca, however, the same methodology could be used for any electron-donating analyte for which a CT reaction can be performed

    Laparoscopic ovarian drilling-plus: a one-stop management approach for PCO-associated infertility

    Background: The current study aims to estimate additional values of laparoscopic intervention for diagnosis and treatment of concomitant pelvic pathologies among infertile women with clomiphene-resistant polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) subjected to laparoscopic ovarian drilling (LOD) in comparison to non-PCOS infertile women subjected to diagnostic/therapeutic laparoscopy.Methods: A prospective cross sectional observational study was carried out in the Endoscopic unit of a tertiary care university hospital.  The study included 232 infertile women planned for laparoscopy were divided into a study group A (116 cases) with clomiphene-resistant PCOS and a control group B (116 cases) without PCOS. Each group was further subdivided into two subgroups according to the presence and absence of risk factors (RF) for adhesion formation. Diagnostic/operative laparoscopy was done. The main study outcome was the prevalence of any pelvic abnormalities seen during laparoscopy.Results: Both groups showed insignificant difference regarding socio-demographic history and basic data. Laparoscopy detected pelvic pathologies in 44 cases (37.9%) and 86 cases (74.1%) in both groups respectively. In group A, we diagnosed pelvic pathologies in 29 (32.6%) and 15 (55.6%) cases with and without RF respectively while in group B they were diagnosed in 76 (84.4%) and 10 (38.5%) cases with and without RF respectively. If compared to women with unexplained infertility, PCO patients without risk factors have an insignificant but higher prevalence of pelvic abnormalities. All concomitant pelvic pathologies in both groups were treated on a one-stop (see and treat) basis.Conclusions: Detection and proper management of associated pelvic pathologies at laparoscopy is a valuable additional advantage of LOD particularly in women with positive risk factors. LOD plus see and treat associated pathologies is a time saving and prompt management approach for women with PCO–associated infertility

    Accelerated versus Standard Corneal Cross-linking for Progressive Keratoconus in Syria

    Purpose: To compare the outcomes of accelerated versus standard corneal cross-linking for the treatment of progressive keratoconus. Methods: In this retrospective comparative study, 63 eyes of 40 patients with progressive keratoconus were divided into two groups; 27 eyes in group one were treated with an accelerated protocol (10 mW/cm2, 9 min) and 36 eyes in group two were treated with the standard method (3 mW/cm2, 30 min). Visual acuity, refraction, corneal topography, corneal tomography, and anterior and posterior corneal higher-order aberrations (HOAs) were assessed preoperatively and 18–30 months postoperatively. Results: The LogMAR uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity values were improved in both groups postoperatively. However, the improvement was significantly higher in group one (P < 0.05, all). The flattening in the anterior keratometry readings, flat K, steep K, and average K were significantly higher in group two (P < 0.001, all). The maximum anterior keratometry (AKf) values significantly decreased in both groups, whereas the maximum posterior keratometry (AKb) values increased. The reduction in the minimum corneal thickness (ThKmin) was significantly greater (36.49um) in group two, compared to 10.85um in group one. There was a significant increase in the posterior average keratometry, and a significant decrease in the posterior astigmatism, along 3 mm meridian in S-CXL (P = 0.03, P = 0.008, respectively), while the corresponding values showed no statistical significance in group one (P > 0.05). The anterior corneal trefoil was significantly reduced in group one (P = 0.002), whereas anterior total HOAs and coma were significantly improved in group two (P < 0.0014, all). The posterior corneal spherical aberration decreased significantly in group one (P = 0.02), while group two revealed significant reduction in the posterior trefoil values (P = 0.011). The change in the anterior maximum keratometry was significantly and positively correlated to the preoperative maximum keratometry in group two (P = 0.53, P = 0.003). Conclusion: An accelerated cross-linking protocol using 10 mW/cm2 for 9 min showed more visual improvement and less pachymetric reduction when compared to the standard protocol, however, anterior corneal flattening, posterior corneal steepening, and the change in the posterior astigmatism were significantly higher in the standard protocol; while corneal HOAs were improved in both protocols

    The effect of auditory stimulation on pain response of preterm infants

    This study aimed to evaluate the effect of auditory stimulation on preterm infants' pain responses. A quasi-experimental design was utilized in this study. Thirty preterm infants were recruited for the study. They were one group used for three days as day one (routine care), day two (music intervention) and day three (recorded mother voice intervention) before, during and after blood sample procedure (heel prick) from Cairo University hospitals (El Monira and Kasar Aini). A tool containing two parts was used for data collection: 1) socio-demographic data for the preterm infants and the mothers, 2) Premature Infant Pain Profile (PIPP) tool for physiological responses (heart rate, oxygen saturation) behavioral state, brow bulge, eye squeeze, nasolabial furrow and respiratory rate was determined. Results of the study showed that during heel prick the majority of preterm infants (96.7%) who were exposed to recorded mother voice had highly statistical significant no or minimal pain followed by music groups (66.7%). On the other hand, nearly half of the cases (46.7%) had moderate pain and (30%) had severe pain among control group. There were significant differences between the three groups in the behavioral state, brow bulge, eye squeeze and nasolabial furrow (P≀0.001) and improved oxygen saturation (P≀0.05). After heel prick, the preterm infants (100%) who were exposed to recorded mother voice had highly statistically significant no or minimal pain in the items of behavioral state, eye squeeze and nasolabial furrow (P≀0.001), brow bulge was significantly lower (P≀0.05) when comparing by control or music group. In Conclusion, exposure to recorded mother voice during heel prick of preterm infants is better than exposure to music or no intervention and this was manifested by lower pain level, decrease heart rate, improved oxygen saturation and respiration.
