    DeepSecure: Scalable Provably-Secure Deep Learning

    This paper proposes DeepSecure, a novel framework that enables scalable execution of the state-of-the-art Deep Learning (DL) models in a privacy-preserving setting. DeepSecure targets scenarios in which neither of the involved parties including the cloud servers that hold the DL model parameters or the delegating clients who own the data is willing to reveal their information. Our framework is the first to empower accurate and scalable DL analysis of data generated by distributed clients without sacrificing the security to maintain efficiency. The secure DL computation in DeepSecure is performed using Yao's Garbled Circuit (GC) protocol. We devise GC-optimized realization of various components used in DL. Our optimized implementation achieves more than 58-fold higher throughput per sample compared with the best-known prior solution. In addition to our optimized GC realization, we introduce a set of novel low-overhead pre-processing techniques which further reduce the GC overall runtime in the context of deep learning. Extensive evaluations of various DL applications demonstrate up to two orders-of-magnitude additional runtime improvement achieved as a result of our pre-processing methodology. This paper also provides mechanisms to securely delegate GC computations to a third party in constrained embedded settings

    Survey of effects of different concentrations of electrolytes and pH on characterization of sperm motility in wild carp (Cyprinus carpio)

    Effects of pH, Na, K, Ca^+ Mg^2+ ions on characterization of sperm motility (duration of motility and percentage of motility) of wild carp (C. carpio) were investigated. After determination of optimum pH, its interaction effect with Na, K, Ca^2+ and Mg^2+ was studied. Maximum motility (duration of motility and percentage of motility) was observed at pH=8.5. Effects of different treatments of NaCl on sperm motility was significantly different (P<0.05) while that of the MgCl _(2) was significantly different (P<0.05). In general, it is concluded that movement of spermatozoa of wild carp is influenced by high concentration of ions

    Geometric morphometric analysis of the molars in three species of the genus Mus (Mus) (Rodentia, Muridae) based on the outline method

    The relatively new technique of outline-based geometric morphometrics was applied in a study of the variation in the shape of the upper and lower molars among 122 mice, belonging to one species from Iran (Mus musculus) and two species from Europe (Mus macedonicus, Mus spicilegus). Differentiation of specimens based on molar shape was highly dependent on the details of the shape information. Among molars, the second upper and first lower molars are better at separating the species. This method provides a useful way to distinguish species based on the outline of their molars.Keywords: shape variation; upper and lower molars; mice; Iran; Europe

    Core promoter short tandem repeats as evolutionary switch codes for primate speciation

    Alteration in gene expression levels underlies many of the phenotypic differences across species. Because of their highly mutable nature, proximity to the +1 transcription start site (TSS), and the emerging evidence of functional impact on gene expression, core promoter short tandem repeats (STRs) may be considered an ideal source of variation across species. In a genome-scale analysis of the entire Homo sapiens protein-coding genes, we have previously identified core promoters with at least one STR of ≥6-repeats, with possible selective advantage in this species. In the current study, we performed reverse analysis of the entire Homo sapiens orthologous genes in mouse in the Ensembl database, in order to identify conserved STRs that have shrunk as an evolutionary advantage to humans. Two protocols were used to minimize ascertainment bias. Firstly, two species sharing a more recent ancestor with Homo sapiens (i.e. Pan troglodytes and Gorilla gorilla gorilla) were also included in the study. Secondly, four non-primate species encompassing the major orders across Mammals, including Scandentia, Laurasiatheria, Afrotheria, and Xenarthra were analyzed as out-groups. We introduce STR evolutionary events specifically identical in primates (i.e. Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, and Gorilla gorilla gorilla) vs. non-primate out-groups. The average frequency of the identically shared STR motifs across those primates ranged between 0.00005 and 0.06. The identified genes are involved in important evolutionary and developmental processes, such as normal craniofacial development (TFAP2B), regulation of cell shape (PALMD), learning and long-term memory (RGS14), nervous system development (GFRA2), embryonic limb morphogenesis (PBX2), and forebrain development (APAF1). We provide evidence of core promoter STRs as evolutionary switch codes for primate speciation, and the first instance of identity-by-descent for those motifs at the interspecies level. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc

    Effects of different levels of Daphnia and Artemia extracts on food acceptability and growth factor rates of beluga (Huso huso Linnaeus, 1758)

    In a 30 day feeding trial, Daphnia and Artemia extracts were added to diets of juvenile Beluga (Huso huso) at different levels to evaluate its effects on growth and survival rate of the fish. The trial was carried out in aquaculture research center of the Gorgan University, during which three different dietary levels of extracts (1:25, 1: 50 and 1:100) were used in 250 liter PVC tanks filled with about 125 liters of water. A total of 20 juvenile Beluga with an average weight of 5 plus or minus 0.2g each was stocked in tanks and were fed 4 meals a day. Growth and survival factors were analyzed at the end of the trial period. The results showed that the addition of extracts in diets led to improvement of body weight increase, weight increase percentage, specific growth rate (SGR), daily growth rate (DGR), daily growth index (DGI), condition factor (CF), price index (PI) and decrease of food conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the control treatment. The best improvement of growth index was achieved at the dietary level 1:50 Artemia extracts. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in survival among treatments

    The incidence of prostate cancer in Iran: Results of a population-based cancer registry

    Background: Little is known about the epidemiology of prostate cancer in Iranian men. We carried out an active prostate cancer surveillance program in five provinces of Iran. Methods: Data used in this study were obtained from population-based cancer registries between 1996 and 2000. Results: The age-standardized incidence rate of prostate carcinoma in the five provinces was 5.1 per 100,000 person-years. No significant difference was seen in the age-standardized incidence rate of prostate cancer within the provinces studied. The mean±SD age of patients with prostate cancer was 67±13.5 years. Conclusion: The incidence of prostate cancer in Iran is very low as compared to the Western countries. This can partly be explained by lack of nationwide screening program, younger age structure and quality of cancer registration system in Iran

    Evaluation of metallothionein protein as a biomarker of Mercury pollution in Scat (Scatophagus argus)

    Total Metallothionein (MT) biosynthesis and Mercury bioaccumulation under control & acute Mercury exposure were investigated in Scat (Scatophagus argus). Tissues from liver and gill of samples Scats were exposed to different Mercury concentrations (10, 20, 30μ g/l) for 24, 48, 72 hours. Mercury contents were determined through Cold Vapour Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (CVAAS). Total MT levels were determined by Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method. Induction of MT during exposure was tissue specific, displaying different response patterns in gill and liver. Mercury accumulated in liver much stronger than gill and the latter also showed lower MT level. Although after exposure to different mercury concentration during different periods, MT biosynthesis in liver showed a significant increase (P<0.05) but in gill did not significantly modify total MT except for 72h exposure at 30 g/l. Nonetheless, the relationship between MT biosynthesis and Mercury bioaccumulation in both tissues was significant. The results suggest that this form of MT presence in S. argus was Hg-inducible and could be extended as a biomarker of Mercury pollution in marine ecosystems and especially in Persian Gulf

    The SiC/SiO Nanostructured Core-Shell as Anode Material for Lithium Ion Batteries: Synthesis and HRTEM Characterization

    The SiC/SiO nanocmposite was synthesized by a sol-gel method with a following heat-treatment process. The SiC nanoparticles were coated with SiO, as a result, a core-shell nanostructured was formed. The processed material was characterized using X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM), fourier-transform IR spectroscopy (FTIR). Data obtained in this research showed that core-shell nanoparticles of SiC/SiO with an average range size of 20- 40 (nm) may be produced through sol-gel processing. The SiC/SiO core-shell nanocomposite can act as regarded candidate for high performance anode materials for lithium ion battery applications.     Use of High-Speed X ray and Video to Analyze Distal Radius Fracture Pathomechanics.

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the failure sequence of the distal radius during a simulated fall onto an outstretched hand using cadaver forearms and high-speed X ray and video systems. This apparatus records the beginning and propagation of bony failure, ultimately resulting in distal radius or forearm fracture. The effects of 3 different wrist guard designs are investigated using this system. Serving as a proof-of-concept analysis, this study supports this imaging technique to be used in larger studies of orthopedic trauma and protective devices and specifically for distal radius fractures
