Evaluation sur le terrain de l'efficacité de trois pyréthrinoides dans le cadre de la lutte contre les vecteurs du paludisme

Trois pyréthrinoïdes, l'OMS-3003, l'OMS-3004, et l'OMS-3021, ont été évalués à la station expérimentale de Soumousso (Burkina Faso) en aspersion intradomiciliaire totale de cases Bobo et Mossi à l'aide de pulvérisateurs à pression préalable de type Hudson. L'efficacité de ces trois pyréthrinoïdes se traduit pour chacun d'entre-eux par une baisse du taux d'entrée des femelles d'#A. #gambiae et d'#A. #funestus dans les cases, une exophilie toujours supérieure à 80%, des taux de gorgement significativement réduits ainsi que des pourcentages de mortalité élevés, particulièrement l'OMS-3004 et l'OMS-3021. De tels résultats permettent d'envisager l'utilisation rationnelle de ces insecticides dans le cadre d'une lutte contre les vecteurs du paludisme. (Résumé d'auteur

Use of reversible hydrides for hydrogen storage

The addition of metals or alloys whose hydrides have a high dissociation pressure allows a considerable increase in the hydrogenation rate of magnesium. The influence of temperature and hydrogen pressure on the reaction rate were studied. Results concerning the hydriding of magnesium rich alloys such as Mg2Ca, La2Mg17 and CeMg12 are presented. “Awww, That’s Such a Cute Lemon!” The Effect of Whimsical Cuteness on Willingness-to-Pay for Imperfect Produce

Many consumers prefer to buy “perfect” produce (e.g., a shiny apple) while avoiding imperfect ones that may be dull in colour and/or odd in shape. In my thesis, I wanted to paint a portrait of this type of consumer. To do so, I looked at various demographic, psychographic and behavioural variables, and found that consumers avoid buying imperfect produce and have negative taste, health and effort perceptions. Further, this type of consumer does not connect the purchase of imperfect produce to food waste and/or environmental issues. Given the impact of food waste on environmental and societal well-being, I then examined a way to encourage consumers to purchase imperfect produce (and at more reasonable prices): more specifically, I tested whether “whimsical cuteness” might influence how much consumers are willing-to-pay for imperfect produce based on prior research showing that whimsicality results in greater usage, and consumption, of whimsical objects (Nenkov and Scott, 2014). I also tested whether this type of priming works through curiosity (Wang and Huang, 2018). Across two experiments, I found that when consumers were shown an advertisement for an oddly shaped lemon with (versus without) a characteristic related to whimsical cuteness (i.e., googly eyes), they were later willing-to-pay more for oddly shaped lemons. This effect remained even when I increased the time between purchase and consumption. The mediating role of curiosity, however, was unclear and should be re-considered in future research

Magnetic and electrical resistance behaviour of the oxides, Ca3−x_{3-x}Yx_xLiRuO6_6 (x= 0.0, 0.5 and 1.0)

We have investigated the magnetic and electrical resistance behaviour of Ca$_{3-x}$Y$_x$LiRuO$_6$. The parent compound exhibits magnetic ordering from Ru sublattice at a rather high temperature, 113 K. Though the paramagnetic Curie temperature ($\theta$$_p$) is negative indicative of antiferromagnetic ordering, the large magnitude (-250 K) of $\theta$$_p$ reveals complex nature of the magnetism in this compound. Ru ions appear to be in the pentavalent state. We note that the N\'eel temperature undergoes only a marginal reduction by Y substitution. All these compositions are found to be insulators and thus the electron doping does not result in metallicity. Thus the overall magnetic and transport behaviour are found to be essentially insensitive to Y substitution for Ca, a finding which may favour the idea of quasi-one-dimensional magnetism in these compounds.Comment: 5 pages of text in RevTex, 6 figures, Solid State Communications (in press

Difonctionnalisation d'un Triarylméthane par des chaines thiénylevinylènes : synthèse et étude de nouveaux interrupteurs moléculaires

En vue de concevoir des interrupteurs moléculaires, nous avons synthétisé des composés constitués d¹un chromophore ionisable de type triarylméthane relié à deux chaînes p-conjuguées (thienylènevinylène) de longueur variable. La spectroscopie UV permet d'étudier la délocalisation du carbocation formé par ionisation du triarylcarbinol en présence d'acide. Des interrupteurs moléculaires acido-basiques ont ainsi été obtenus. La modulation du groupe partant devrait conférer des propriétés de photo-interrupteurs à ces composés.New molecular switches composed of triarlymethanol substituted PTVs (polythienylenevinylenes) were prepared.
