ANEM: A rotating composite target to produce an atmospheric-like neutron beam at the LNL SPES facility
A fast neutron (E> MeV) irradiation facility is under development at the 70 MeV SPES proton cyclotron at LNL (Legnaro, Italy) to investigate neutron-induced Single Event Effects (SEE) in microelectronic devices and systems. After an overview on neutron-induced SEE in electronics, we report on the progress in the design of ANEM (Atmospheric Neutron EMulator), a water-cooled rotating target made of Be and W to produce neutrons with an energy spectrum similar to that of neutrons produced by cosmic rays at sea-level. In ANEM, the protons from the cyclotron alternatively impinge on two circular sectors of Be and W of different areas; the effective neutron spectrum is a weighted combination of the spectra from the two sectors. In this contribution, we present the results of thermal-mechanical Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS) calculations of the performance of the ANEM prototype. The calculations at this stage indicate that ANEM can deliver fast neutrons with an atmospheric-like energy spectrum and with an integral flux [Formula: see text](1-70 MeV) [Formula: see text]107 n cm[Formula: see text]s[Formula: see text] that is 3×109 more intense than the natural one at sea-level: a very competitive flux for SEE testing
A reconfigurable, tendon-based haptic interface for research into human-environment interactions
Human reaction to external stimuli can be investigated in a comprehensive way by using a versatile virtual-reality setup involving multiple display technologies. It is apparent that versatility remains a main challenge when human reactions are examined through the use of haptic interfaces as the interfaces must be able to cope with the entire range of diverse movements and forces/torques a human subject produces. To address the versatility challenge, we have developed a large-scale reconfigurable tendon-based haptic interface which can be adapted to a large variety of task dynamics and is integrated into a Cave Automatic Virtual Environment (CAVE). To prove the versatility of the haptic interface, two tasks, incorporating once the force and once the velocity extrema of a human subject's extremities, were implemented: a simulator with 3-DOF highly dynamic force feedback and a 3-DOF setup optimized to perform dynamic movements. In addition, a 6-DOF platform capable of lifting a human subject off the ground was realized. For these three applications, a position controller was implemented, adapted to each task, and tested. Lithium ion-induced damage in silicon detectors
Silicon diodes processed by CNM on standard and oxygenated silicon substrates have been irradiated by 58 MeV lithium ions. The radiation-induced effects are very similar to the one observed after proton irradiation: substrate space charge sign inversion (SCSI), lower increase of the effective substrate doping concentration after SCSI for the oxygenated devices. The experimental radiation hardness factor has been determined to be 45.01, within 8.2% with the expected value. These results suggest that 58 MeV Li ions are a suitable radiation source for radiation hardness studies by ions heavier than protons for the future very high luminosity hadron colliders
New evidence of dominant processing effects in standard and oxygenated silicon diodes after neutron irradiation
Abstract Silicon diodes processed on standard and oxygenated silicon substrates by three different manufacturers have been irradiated by neutrons in a nuclear reactor. The leakage current density ( J D ) increase is linear with the neutron fluence. J D and its annealing curve at 80°C do not present any sizeable dependence on substrate oxygenation and/or manufacturing process. The acceptor introduction rate ( β ) of the effective substrate doping concentration ( N eff ) is independent from the oxygen concentration when standard and oxygenated devices from the same manufacturer are considered. On the contrary, β significantly varies from one manufacturer to another showing that the β dependence on the particular process can be important, overtaking the small substrate oxygenation effect. Finally, the average saturation value of the N eff reverse annealing is slightly lower for the oxygenated samples, pointing out a positive effect of the substrate oxygenation even for devices irradiated by neutrons
Broken pairs and evolution of collectivity in the A≊140 mass region: High spin states of the ^138_60Nd_78 nucleus
An in-beam γ-ray study performed with the 121Sb(19F,4n) reaction has established the high spin level structure of the N=78 nucleus 138Nd. States up to I=21ħ and 8.5 MeV excitation energy have been indentified. High spin states are described in the framework of the cranking model and of the interacting boson model with broken pairs. The calculations reproduce levels up to I=18ħ including the two 10+ states which, from the feeding cascades, are identified as the νh^-1_11/2 and πh^2_11/2 excitations. Cranked Strutinsky type calculations predict opposite shapes for the two different types of excitations
Observation of Hadronic W Decays in t-tbar Events with the Collider Detector at Fermilab
We observe hadronic W decays in t-tbar -> W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet events using
a 109 pb-1 data sample of p-pbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV collected with
the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). A peak in the dijet invariant mass
distribution is obtained that is consistent with W decay and inconsistent with
the background prediction by 3.3 standard deviations. From this peak we measure
the W mass to be 77.2 +- 4.6 (stat+syst) GeV/c^2. This result demonstrates the
presence of two W bosons in t-tbar candidates in the W (-> l nu) + >= 4 jet

Search for charged Higgs decays of the top quark using hadronic tau decays
We present the result of a search for charged Higgs decays of the top quark,
produced in collisions at 1.8 TeV. When the charged
Higgs is heavy and decays to a tau lepton, which subsequently decays
hadronically, the resulting events have a unique signature: large missing
transverse energy and the low-charged-multiplicity tau. Data collected in the
period 1992-1993 at the Collider Detector at Fermilab, corresponding to
18.70.7~pb, exclude new regions of combined top quark and charged
Higgs mass, in extensions to the standard model with two Higgs doublets.Comment: uuencoded, gzipped tar file of LaTeX and 6 Postscript figures; 11 pp;

Inclusive jet cross section in collisions at TeV
The inclusive jet differential cross section has been measured for jet
transverse energies, , from 15 to 440 GeV, in the pseudorapidity region
0.10.7. The results are based on 19.5 pb of data
collected by the CDF collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data
are compared with QCD predictions for various sets of parton distribution
functions. The cross section for jets with GeV is significantly
higher than current predictions based on O() perturbative QCD
calculations. Various possible explanations for the high- excess are

Measurement of the Associated Production Cross Section in Collisions at TeV
We present the first measurement of associated direct photon + muon
production in hadronic collisions, from a sample of 1.8 TeV
collisions recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. Quantum
chromodynamics (QCD) predicts that these events are primarily from the Compton
scattering process , with the final state charm quark producing
a muon. Hence this measurement is sensitive to the charm quark content of the
proton. The measured cross section of is compared to a
leading-order QCD parton shower model as well as a next-to-leading-order QCD
