The Impact of Unanticipated Defaults in Canada's Large Value Transfer System

    Get PDF
Canada's Large Value Transfer System (LVTS) is designed to meet international risk-proofing standards at a minimum cost to participants in terms of collateral requirements. It does so, in part, through collateralized risk-sharing arrangements whereby participants may incur losses if another participant defaults. The LVTS is designed to be robust to defaults. Its rules, however, do not ensure that individual participants are robust to defaults. The author studies participants' robustness to default empirically by creating unanticipated defaults in LVTS, and finds that all participants are able to withstand their loss allocations that result from the largest defaults she can create using actual LVTS data.Financial institutions; Payment, clearing, and settlement systems

Price Movements in the Canadian Residential Mortgage Market

    Get PDF
The authors empirically analyze the price-setting behaviour of the major Canadian banks in the residential mortgage market over the period 1991–2007. They use weekly posted prices of the major mortgage providers to study the degree of competition in mortgage price setting. Their results suggest that the residential mortgage market is imperfectly competitive. They find distinct price leaders and that, as market concentration increases, so does price dispersion - helped by the increased use of discounting from posted prices. The authors also find that, although banks' pass-through of input price changes to mortgage prices is complete in the long run under reasonable assumptions regarding discounting, there exists some level of pricing asymmetry in the short run.Financial Financial institutions; Financial services

Observation of Visitors at a Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) Ecotourism Site Reveals Opportunity for Multiple Modes of Pathogen Transmission

Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) tracking is a popular ecotourism activity across Sub-Saharan Africa, offering visitors a personal wildlife experience. However, chimpanzee ecotourism may increase the risk of disease transmission between chimpanzees and people. This study assessed how tourist behaviors might facilitate cross-species disease transmission in Kibale National Park, Uganda

The Predictability of REIT Returns and Market Segmentatio

    Get PDF
A two-factor regression model was used to examine the relationship between returns on healthcare equity REITs (EREITs) and healthcare stocks from 1985 to 1992. General stock indices were incorporated in the model to account for the influence of the market. Multiple positive contemporaneous relationships were found between six of the seven REITs studied and portfolios of other healthcare stocks. Furthermore, in four of the six REITs with positive results, significant correlations were evident between individual REIT portfolios and the SIC indices with which they showed a significant relationship. These results are consistent with a common factor or factors affecting the returns of both healthcare EREITs and stocks. The relationships found between returns on healthcare EREITs and healthcare stocks, especially the correlation between the classification of the EREIT portfolios and SIC indices, indicate the importance of real estate management for healthcare firms and asset subclassification choice for the real estate manager. Although this study specifically investigated healthcare EREITs and healthcare stocks, the results may be more widely applicable to other single-property-type EREITs.

Children Dwelling in the Absence of Home

    Get PDF
The lived experience of children dwelling in the absence of home is explored through the memoirs of Haddy, who as a child of four moved with her family from Fiji to Canada. The recollections of some refugee children along with situations from the author’s own life appear more nominally. The feeling of at-homeness, the act of leaving home, the experience of arriving in a new place, and making a new home are considered. Schutz’s (1971) notion of the ‘stranger’ is applied to children living on the margin as they learn to be at ease in their new world (Lugones, 1987). The significance of language in the everyday lived experience of home (Heidegger, 1971) is also discussed. Moreover, Husserl’s homeworld/alienworld dialectic as opened up by Steinbock (1995) is considered in some depth. The co-arising and interdependent nature of homeworld/alienworld is presented as essential to gaining insight into the lived experience of children between homes. Pedagogical considerations suggested for early learning and care settings include but are not limited to creating environments where homeworld/alienworld encounters can be lived out in rich and meaningful ways, promoting active engagement with difference and diversity, providing for home language and dominant language use, the establishment of homecomrade connections, and instilling a focus on the reciprocity of care for the other.Indo-Pacific Journal of Phenomenology Volume 12, Special Edition May 201
