    Space debris measurement program at Phillips Laboratory

    Ground-based optical sensing was identified as a technique for measuring space debris complementary to radar in the critical debris size range of 1 to 10 cm. The Phillips Laboratory is building a staring optical sensor for space debris measurement and considering search and track optical measurement at additional sites. The staring sensor is implemented in collaboration with Wright Laboratory using the 2.5 m telescope at Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio. The search and track sensor is designed to detect and track orbital debris in tasked orbits. A progress report and a discussion of sensor performance and search and track strategies will be given

    Some solutions to respond climate change for the Mekong Delta, Viet Nam

    In the recent decades, the Mekong River Delta has suffered quite significant impacts of climate change. Fluctuations of weather elements and sea level rises have caused adverse changes, namely: the appearance of unusual high and low levels of annual floods, more and more intense storms, more severe droughts, forest fires, river erosion, cyclones, and tidal surges appear increasingly more dangerous. Traditional adaptation measures to the environmental conditions may be unsuitable in the context of climate change in the Mekong River Delta. This paper summarizes some of the new adaptation measures that scientists and policy planners have proposed for the area to cope with the negative impacts of climate change

    Wisely using natural water resources to serve human needs plays a decisive role in ensuring water and food security. In the natural water cycle, rainwater is considered as a valuable renewable resource. Rainwater harvesting (RWH) for daily life and production is a simple but effective and also environmentally sound measure. It is also a positive solution in a climate change adaptation strategy. However, this resource is being wasted in our country in general and in the HCM City in particular. This paper provides an overview of the status of rainwater use in the world; the general situation, the potential of rainwater collection and a number of issues related to the potential of rainwater harvesting in the city. Some solutions to enhance the use of rainwater and improve water supply for city residents are also suggested in this discussion

    An adaptive splitting algorithm for the sum of two generalized monotone operators and one cocoercive operator

    Splitting algorithms for finding a zero of sum of operators often involve multiple steps which are referred to as forward or backward steps. Forward steps are the explicit use of the operators and backward steps involve the operators implicitly via their resolvents. In this paper, we study an adaptive splitting algorithm for finding a zero of the sum of three operators. We assume that two of the operators are generalized monotone and their resolvents are computable, while the other operator is cocoercive but its resolvent is missing or costly to compute. Our splitting algorithm adapts new parameters to the generalized monotonicity of the operators and, at the same time, combines appropriate forward and backward steps to guarantee convergence to a solution of the problem. © 2021, The Author(s)

    Piezoresistive effect of p-type single crystalline 3C-SiC on (111) plane

    This paper presents for the first time the effect of strain on the electrical conductivity of p-type single crystalline 3C-SiC grown on a Si (111) substrate. 3C-SiC thin film was epitaxially formed on a Si (111) substrate using the low pressure chemical vapor deposition process. The piezoresistive effect of the grown film was investigated using the bending beam method. The average longitudinal gauge factor of the p-type single crystalline 3C-SiC was found to be around 11 and isotropic in the (111) plane. This gauge factor is 3 times smaller than that in a p-type 3C-SiC (100) plane. This reduction of the gauge factor was attributed to the high density of defects in the grown 3C-SiC (111) film. Nevertheless, the gauge factor of the p-type 3C-SiC (111) film is still approximately 5 times higher than that in most metals, indicating its potential for niche mechanical sensing applications

    An investigation was performed of the technical steps required to design a solar powered oxygen-iodine laser. Singlet delta oxygen is formed upon transfer of energy from selected photoexcited dye molecules to ground state molecular oxygen and then is concentrated and stored as an endoperoxide by reaction with an aromatic hydrocarbon. The endoperoxide, when heated, releases singlet oxygen in high yield thus providing a regenerable source of laser fuel. Energy transfer from dye molecules to molecular oxygen was investigated. When dye molecules were adsorbed to polymer substrates it was observed that the dye became embedded in the polymer matrix. Porphin dyes were incorporated into films of 1,4-dimethyl-2-poly(vinylnaphthalene), 2PVN. An endoperoxide was formed when porphin-doped 2PVN was exposed to visible radiation. This demonstrates the possibility of generating singlet oxygen using solar energy and concentrating and storing it in one simple step.
