    Circular motion of neutral test particles in Reissner-Nordstr\"om spacetime

    We investigate the motion of neutral test particles in the gravitational field of a mass MM with charge QQ described by the Reissner-Nordstr\"om (RN) spacetime. We focus on the study of circular stable and unstable orbits around configurations describing either black holes or naked singularities. We show that at the classical radius, defined as Q2/MQ^2/M, there exist orbits with zero angular momentum due to the presence of repulsive gravity. The analysis of the stability of circular orbits indicates that black holes are characterized by a continuous region of stability. In the case of naked singularities, the region of stability can split into two non-connected regions inside which test particles move along stable circular orbits.Comment: 23 pages, 22 figures.     Knock-Out of the Genes Coding for the Rieske Protein and the ATP-Synthase δ-Subunit of Arabidopsis

    In Arabidopsis, the nuclear genes PetC and AtpD code for the Rieske protein of the cytochrome b6/f (cyt b6/f) complex and the δ-subunit of the chloroplast ATP synthase (cpATPase), respectively. Knock-out alleles for each of these loci have been identified. Greenhouse-grown petc-2 and atpd-1 mutants are seedling lethal, whereas heterotrophically propagated plants display a high-chlorophyll (Chl)-fluorescence phenotype, indicating that the products of PetC and AtpD are essential for photosynthesis. Additional effects of the mutations in axenic culture include altered leaf coloration and increased photosensitivity. Lack of the Rieske protein affects the stability of cyt b6/f and influences the level of other thylakoid proteins, particularly those of photosystem II. In petc-2, linear electron flow is blocked, leading to an altered redox state of both the primary quinone acceptor QA in photosystem II and the reaction center Chl P700 in photosystem I. Absence of cpATPase-δ destabilizes the entire cpATPase complex, whereas residual accumulation of cyt b6/f and of the photosystems still allows linear electron flow. In atpd-1, the increase in non-photochemical quenching of Chl fluorescence and a higher de-epoxidation state of xanthophyll cycle pigments under low light is compatible with a slower dissipation of the transthylakoid proton gradient. Further and clear differences between the two mutations are evident when mRNA expression profiles of nucleus-encoded chloroplast proteins are considered, suggesting that the physiological states conditioned by the two mutations trigger different modes of plastid signaling and nuclear response

    Ecology of the non-native snail Sinotaia cf quadrata (Caenogastropoda: Viviparidae). A study in a lowland stream of South America with different water qualities

    Sinotaia quadrata is a snail native from Asia recorded for the first time in South America in 2009 in central Argentina. In 2015, this species was also found in a lowland stream with different water qualities. Our aims were to contribute to the knowledge of its population ecology and to compare the individuals from the two locations anatomically. Snails were searched at 6 sites, where physicochemical and hydraulic parameters were measured. Biological samples were also taken at two sites (S3 and S4) to study the population traits of S. cf quadrata (density, size structure, fecundity and sex ratio) and to assess the water quality through macroinvertebrates' biological indices (richness, diversity and IBPamp). Physicochemical and biological parameters allowed us classifying sites as "moderately polluted" (S3) and "heavily polluted" (S4). At S4, the population showed a lower density, larger individuals, higher fecundity and a scarce representation of young snails. The differences observed in the radula and mantle border of snails from the two geographical regions might be attributed to environmental differences. We conclude that this species is tolerant to a wide range of environmental variables which, along with its high fecundity and morphological plasticity, could allow this species to colonize neighbor streams.Fil: Ferreira, Ana Clara.     Anticipatory Feelings in Intertemporal Choice on Consumption: A Dynamic Experiment

    Following the evaluation of anticipatory feelings in Scitovsky\u2019s Joyless Economy, we explored a specific interpretation of reversals in intertemporal choice. Anticipatory feelings can be explained as the feeling experienced by the agent while awaiting an upcoming event. We adopted a dynamic experiment where individuals made decisions of consumption at multiple points of time: three experimental sessions in three different dates at two-week intervals. We elicited the initial plans of the same sample in three different sessions over a one-month period and tracked how they implemented their plans as the anticipated event drew closer. The paper innovates with respect to the literature on intertemporal decision making in that the motivation for a varying discount rate, caused by anticipation or procrastination, has been elicited with both monetary and non-monetary (consumption) incentives and within a dynamic setting. We found that anticipatory feeling is a significant possible explanation behind choice reversal. The results remained significant after controlling the other explanatory factors such as risk aversion, uncertainty and time inconsistency

    Trastuzumab-Induced Interstitial Pneumonitis

    Trastuzumab is a recombinant immunoglobulin G1 monoclonal antibody used to treat human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) cancers. Trastuzumab-induced interstitial pneumonitis is a rare adverse effect reported in a few patients. Interstitial pneumonitis presents as symptoms of dyspnea, hypoxia, cough, and fever. If the patient is treated early, corticosteroids can slow or reverse the disease progression. A 41-year-old woman presented with dyspnea and a dry cough three weeks after her third cycle of trastuzumab therapy for breast cancer. A diagnosis of trastuzumab-induced interstitial pneumonitis was made after multiple other disease processes were ruled out. The patient was started on methylprednisolone while inpatient and transitioned to prednisone for outpatient therapy. The patient was maintained on 2-3L of oxygen throughout her hospital stay and was discharged on 3L of oxygen through nasal cannula. Trastuzumab was never restarted after discharge. There have been many trials evaluating the safety, efficacy, and optimal treatment regimen of trastuzumab, but there are only a few reports of interstitial pneumonitis adverse reaction. The lack of correlation and limited cases make this adverse effect very difficult to diagnose and monitor. New trials and case reports can bring an insight into contributing factors, symptoms at onset, and treatment for future patients. With the increase in use of trastuzumab therapy, physicians should be aware of how to diagnose and treat the rare adverse reaction of trastuzumab-induced interstitial pneumonitis

    PREVALENCE AND CLINICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF MOUTH BREATHING PATIENTS IN VIÑA DEL MAR AND QUILPUÉ, CHILE

    Objective: This study aimed to clinically characterize and determine the prevalence of mouth breathing in the pediatric population.Materials and methods: 383 students, aged 6 to 13 years, from public and private subsidized schools were analyzed.  Clinical criteria were applied, and measurement of maximum nasal inhalation flow (PNIF) was performed to determine their breathing condition (Mouth, Nasal, or Mixed). Statistical analysis of the data was carried out through Stata SE 10.1, R-Cran 2.13.1, and Minitab 15. Results: The prevalence of mouth breathers was 18,80%, mixed breathers 17,49%, and nasal breathers 63,71%. The most common facial characteristic was the presence of eye bags (82%)  and dry lips (78%). The maximum nasal inhalation flow (PNIF) average registered in mouth breathing patients was 54,4 L/min, meanwhile in nasal breathing patients was 84,7 L/min.Conclusion: Mouth-breathers are a relevant percentage of the examined population. Early intervention of pediatricians is transcendental for the diagnosis, derivation, and treatment of this syndrome in order to limit future complications
