Traces of Memory in Alzheimer's Disease: Between Invention and Hallucination

O artigo discute como a memória se constitui numa relação tensa e ambígua entre imaginação e alucinação, juventude e velhice, normal e patológico ao longo da composição da doença de Alzheimer. Se a bibliografia mostra como o processo mnemônico não se dá de maneira cronológica e linear, mas como sobreposição e emaranhado temporal, cabe se perguntar quando esse processo se torna patológico. A partir de noções como trauma, verdade contrafactual e alucinação, o artigo percorre os diferentes significados, contextos e usos da memória.The article discusses how memory is constituted in a tense and ambiguous relationship between imagination and hallucination, youth and old age, normal and pathological over of the Alzheimer’s composition. If the bibliography shows how the process mnemonic does not unfold in a chronological way and linear, but as overlapping and entangled temporal, it is worth to ask when this process becomes pathological. From notions such as trauma, truth, factual, and hallucination, the article walks you through the different meanings, contexts and uses of memory

Pistas de um cotidiano assombrado: a saga do diagnóstico na doença de Alzheimer

A partir da observação de consultas nos ambulatórios de neurologia e psiquiatria geriátrica de um hospital universitário e de reuniões da Associação Brasileira de Alzheimer, o artigo mostra o complexo e difícil trajeto para a composição do diagnóstico de doença de Alzheimer, com vozes entrecruzadas de cuidadores-familiares, doentes, residentes e médicos, disputas entre as áreas da medicina, polêmicas e revisões diagnósticas. Ao longo da tessitura da doença, a funcionalidade se apresenta como embate narrativo e performático entre os sujeitos envolvidos e o diagnóstico se revela um enigma que desestabiliza não só paradigmas médicos, mas também filosóficos, políticos, sociais ao conectar a doença com outras noções, como memória, pessoa, velhice. Nesse percurso, a família aparece como medida e desmedida: se o relato do cuidador-familiar é fundamental para o diagnóstico, ele leva às consultas outros conflitos que transbordam a competência médica.From observation of consultations in the outpatient clinics of neurology and geriatric psychiatry of a University hospital and meetings of the Brazilian Association of Alzheimer's, the article shows the complex and difficult path to the composition of the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, with voices intersecting caregivers-family members, patients, residents, and doctors, disputes between the areas of medicine, polemics and diagnostic reviews. Along the composition of the disease, the functionality presents itself as a collision of a narrative and the performance between the subjects involved and the diagnosis reveals itself as a puzzle that destabilizes not only the medical paradigms, but also philosophical, political, social, when the disease is connected to other notions, such as memory, person and old age. On this journey, the family appears as measured and unmeasured: if the familiar-caregiver report is critical to the diagnosis, it leads to queries other conflicts that spill over medical competence

Da alucinação na clínica ao ver alucinatório da imagem: um percurso etnográfico

Following the threads that compose Alzheimer’s disease, including the lines of flight, became the trajectory shaping the course of my doctoral research. Here, I demonstrate this ethnographic journey through the lines and images with which I wove the disease as a field of experiences and disputes, in which it manifests as a diagnosis, a mode of subjectivity and an aesthetic simultaneously. From medical consultations to deliriums, from medicine to shamanism and the viewpoint of those with dementia, the images opened me up to other ways of seeing and narrating the disease. Along this journey, an ethnographic proposal emerged. What did Alzheimer’s disease reveal to me about doing anthropology – and vice-versa? How did the passage between living the disease and telling others about it help me envisage my own passage between living the field and its retelling? Since as Alzheimer’s disease was gradually being composed, so too was an ethnography.Seguir os fios que compõem a doença de Alzheimer, incluindo as linhas de fuga, foi o trajeto percorrido ao longo de minha pesquisa de doutorado. Neste artigo, mostro esse percurso etnográfico através das linhas e imagens com que fui tecendo a doença de Alzheimer como um campo de experiências e disputas, em que se constitui tanto um diagnóstico quanto um modo de subjetividade e uma estética. Das consultas médicas aos delírios, da medicina ao xamanismo e ponto de vista demente, as imagens me abriram para outras maneiras de ver e narrar a doença. E, ao longo desse trajeto, uma proposta etnográfica apareceu. O que a doença de Alzheimer me revelou do fazer antropológico? Pois à medida que a doença de Alzheimer ia sendo composta, tecia-se também uma etnografia

Between parents and children : judiciary practices on family crimes

Para isso, analisei os processos de homicídio e tentativa de homicídio entre pais e filhos tramitados no Fórum de Campinas no período de 1982 a 2002, além de assistir audiências, julgamentos e realizar entrevistas. O objetivo foi apreender as práticas judiciais, ou seja, os argumentos e as estratégias de advogados, promotores e juízes no julgamento desses crimes. A partir de uma análise comparativa com os crimes entre casais, mostro como pais que matam seus filhos e maridos que matam suas esposas podem ser lidos em um pólo masculino através das noções de autoridade e honra, respectivamente, enquanto que filhos que matam seus pais e esposas que matam seus maridos estariam em um pólo feminino pelas figuras da loucura, de um lado, e da defesa da vida, de outro. Contrariando alguns estudos sobre violência doméstica que explicam as sentenças favoráveis ao réu a partir de uma tentativa, por parte da justiça, de defender a família, mostro como é outra visão sobre as relações familiares que está em jogo: não se trata de preservar ou defender, apesar de ser esta a retórica dos advogados nos processos criminais, mas de expulsar a família do sistema de justiça ao reconhecê-la como um palco de conflitos insolúveis que desafia a capacidade do Direito Penal de reintegrar o crime numa ordem simbólica e de dar-lhe um sentido à luz da distinção entre o bem e o mal. Assim, os crimes entre pais e filhos ora são arremessados para o reino da psiquiatria, ora são devolvidos à família, com a absolvição do réu.Abstract: This work intends to reflect about the family violence in the Sphere of the Criminal law. In order to do so, I have analyzed murder and murder attempt indictments between parents and children conducted at Campinas Forum in the period from 1982 to 2002, and I have also watched hearings, trials and performed interviews. The goal was to learn the judicial practices, in other words, the reasoning and strategies used by lawyers and judges on the trials of these crimes. Beginning with a comparative analyses with the crimes between couples, I show how parents that murder their children and husbands that murder their lives can be read in a masculine pole through notions of authority and honor, respectively, while the children that murder their parents and wives that murder their husbands would be on a feminine pole through the figure of madness, on one side, and of life defense on the other. Contradicting some studies regarding domestic violence that explain the sentences in favor of the defendant in an attempt by the Justice to defend the family, I show here another view over the family relations at stack: it is not about preserving or defending, despite the fact that this is the rhetoric employed by the lawyers on the criminal processes, but expel the family from the justice system when acknowledging it as a stage for insoluble conflicts that challenge the capability of the criminal justice of reintegrating the crime on a symbolical order and give it a meaning in face of the distinction between the good and evil. Thereby, the crimes between parents and children nevertheless are thrown towards the psychiatry field and other times are given back to the family with the discharge of the defendant.MestradoMestre em Antropologia Socia
