Modern languages in the primary school in Spain and Scotland

This article reports the outcomes of study visits to Spain in June 1998 and June 1999 to consider early language learning. The Basque Country was chosen because of its linguistic diversity in that there could be lessons to be learned for parts of Scotland where a language other than English is also the mother tongue. It also has autonomy in Education and would therefore differ from the situation in what was formerly known as el territorio MEC, namely, those parts of Spain which came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education in Madrid. The situation in the former territorio MEC would form the second part of the study visit in 1998 when schools and other establishments in the Spanish capital would be visited and in 1999 when establishments in Asturias would be visited. During the visits there was the opportunity to meet both prirnary and secondary teachers, headteachers and some of those responsible for early language learning in Bilbao and Madrid and Asturias. We were able to observe classes in Bilbao, Larrabetzu San Sebastian, Irun, Gijon and Greater Madrid

Comparing Fixed and Adaptive Computation Time for Recurrent Neural Networks

Adaptive Computation Time for Recurrent Neural Networks (ACT) is one of the most promising architectures for variable computation. ACT adapts to the input sequence by being able to look at each sample more than once, and learn how many times it should do it. In this paper, we compare ACT to Repeat-RNN, a novel architecture based on repeating each sample a fixed number of times. We found surprising results, where Repeat-RNN performs as good as ACT in the selected tasks. Homeric Tradition in La Araucana by Alonso de Ercilla: Some References about the Catalogue of Warriors

El objetivo final del trabajo es el método de resolución de la ecuación de Pell. Como es bien conocido las soluciones de dicha ecuación son, esencialmente, las unidades de los anillos de enteros cuadráticos. Por ello el trabajo se enmarca dentro del estudio de dichos anillos de números en cuanto al problema de la factorización. Por otro lado la técnica de resolución clásica está basada en las fracciones contínuas, por lo que su estudio es la parte central del trabajo.Grado en Matemática

Doppler shift compensation strategies for LEO satellite communication systems

Development of signal processing for communication in NGEO systems in order to counteract the high doppler component.Broadband connectivity only covers one third of the earth's surface. LEO satellite communication systems can be a solution to extend and complement terrestrial networks. Nevertheless, mobile ground-terminals receive high Doppler shift over the satellite channel, due the relative motion between the satellite and the mobile terminal. In this project is analysed the Doppler shift over the satellite channel observed by a mobile terminal. The analysis is done implementing a Matlab Orbital simulator transmitting an OFDM signal. Also is proposed a Doppler shift compensation strategy for LEO communications systems with the implementation of an ML Doppler estimator in the OFDM receiver. Several results are presented to evaluate the Doppler observed by the terminals in different positions as well as the BER for different SNR and Doppler shift.La conectividad de banda ancha actualmente sólo cubre un tercio de la superficie terrestre. Los sistemas de comunicación por satélite LEO pueden ser una solución a tener en cuenta para ampliar y complementar las redes terrestres. Sin embargo, los terminales terrestres móviles reciben un cambio de la frecuencia elevado (efecto Doppler) sobre el canal satélite debido a las velocidades de movimiento relativas entre el satélite y el terminal móvil. En este proyecto se estudia el efecto Doppler sobre el canal satélite observado por un terminal móvil. El análisis se hace implementando un simulador Orbital Matlab que transmite una señal OFDM. También se propone una estrategia de compensación Doppler para los sistemas de comunicaciones LEO con la implementación de un estimador Doppler ML en el receptor OFDM. Se presentan varios resultados en términos de Doppler observado por los terminales en diferentes posiciones, así como la BER para diferentes SNR y Doppler recibido por los terminales.La connectivitat de banda ampla actualment només cobreix un terç de la superfície terrestre.
