Parallel-gap welding for joints between copper conductors and Kovar
Welding technique produces more reliable joints than soldering. Investigation used different sizes of copper conductors and component lead ribbons, corrosion protection platings, and melting points of metals being joined. Optimum combination is gold-plated component lead ribbons and solder-plated copper conductors
Universal Landauer conductance in chiral symmetric 2d systems
We study transport properties of an arbitrarily shaped ultraclean graphene
sheet, adiabatically connected to leads,composed by the same material. If the
localized interactions do not destroy chiral symmetry, we show that the
conductance is quantized, since it is dominated by the quasi one-dimensional
leads. As an example, we show that smooth structural deformations of the
graphene plane do not modify the conductance quantization.Comment: 6 pages, no figure
Review of the West Indian species of Efferia Coquillett (Diptera: Asilidae): Part 1. Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Cuba, and Jamaica
The genus Efferia Coquillett from the Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Cuba, and Jamaica is reviewed. The fauna now totals 16 species with 6 new species described (Ef. bellardii n. sp., Ef. bromleyi n. sp., Ef. hinei n. sp., Ef. insula n. sp., Ef. pina n. sp., and Ef. vinalensis n. sp.). Cuba has the greatest diversity with 10 species, Jamaica 3, the Bahamas 2, and the Cayman Islands 1. Efferia stylata (Fabricius) is removed from the species list of these West Indian islands. The wings of Ef. caymanensis Scarbrough and Ef. bromleyi, spermathecae of Ef. bromleyi, Ef. cubensis (Bromley), Ef. insula, Ef. nigritarsis (Hine), and terminalia of all species are illustrated. Keys for the identification of the species are provided. Specimens of two additional species from Cuba are in too poor a condition to be described but their terminalia are illustrated and the species are included in the key to the males

On the Origin of the Type Ia Supernova Width-Luminosity Relation
Brighter Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) have broader, more slowly declining
B-band light curves than dimmer SNe Ia. We study the physical origin of this
width-luminosity relation (WLR) using detailed radiative transfer calculations
of Chandrasekhar mass SN Ia models. We find that the luminosity dependence of
the diffusion time (emphasized in previous studies) is in fact of secondary
relevance in understanding the model WLR. Instead, the essential physics
involves the luminosity dependence of the spectroscopic/color evolution of SNe
Ia. Following maximum-light, the SN colors are increasingly affected by the
development of numerous Fe II/Co II lines which blanket the B-band and, at the
same time, increase the emissivity at longer wavelengths. Because dimmer SNe Ia
are generally cooler, they experience an earlier onset of Fe III to Fe II
recombination in the iron-group rich layers of ejecta, resulting in a more
rapid evolution of the SN colors to the red. The faster B-band decline rate of
dimmer SNe Ia thus reflects their faster ionization evolution.Comment: 6 pages, submitted to Ap

Evaluation of macrophyte control in 38 Florida lakes using triploid grass carp
Florida’s large number of shallow lakes, warm climate and
long growing season have contributed to the development of
excessive growths of aquatic macrophytes that have seriously
interfered with many water use activities. The introduction
of exotic aquatic macrophyte species such as hydrilla (
Hydrilla
verticillata
) have added significantly to aquatic plant problems
in Florida lakes. The use of grass carp (
Ctenopharyngodon
idella
) can be an effective and economical control for aquatic
vegetation such as hydrilla. Early stocking rates (24 to 74
grass carp per hectare of lake area) resulted in grass carp
consumption rates that vastly exceeded the growth rates of
the aquatic plants and often resulted in the total loss of all
submersed vegetation. This study looked at 38 Florida lakes
that had been stocked with grass carp for 3 to 10 years with
stocking rates ranging from < 1 to 59 grass carp per hectare
of lake and 1 to 207 grass carp per hectare of vegetation to
determine the long term effects of grass carp on aquatic macrophyte
communities. The median PAC (percent area coverage)
value of aquatic macrophytes for the study lakes after
they were stocked with grass carp was 14% and the median
PVI (percent volume infested) value of aquatic macrophytes
was 2%. Only lakes stocked with less than 25 to 30 fish per
hectare of vegetation tended to have higher than median
PAC and PVI values. When grass carp are stocked at levels of
> 25 to 30 fish per hectare of vegetation the complete control
of aquatic vegetation can be achieved, with the exception of
a few species of plants that grass carp have extreme difficulty
consuming. If the management goal for a lake is to control
some of the problem aquatic plants while maintaining a
small population of predominately unpalatable aquatic
plants, grass carp can be stocked at approximately 25 to 30
fish per hectare of vegetation
