    Narrative Space and Serialized Forms: Story-Spaces for the Mass Market in Victorian Print and Contemporary Television

    Despite Bakhtin\u27s notion of the chronotope and recent advancements in spatial theory by David Herman, Marie-Laure Ryan and Susan Friedman, narrative space is arguably still one of the most under-researched elements in narrative theory, taking a back seat to its corollary of narrative time and plot. This oversight can be largely attributed to the structuralist separation of text types exemplified by Genette\u27s assertions that description and narrative were distinctly different forms. Recent approaches such as David Herman\u27s rejection of such a separation in Story Logic, however, argue that spatial reference plays a crucial, not optional or derivative role in stories (264), and that spatial reference is, rather, a core property that helps \u27constitute\u27 narrative domains (296). In response to this gap, this dissertation examines the relationship between textual constructions of narrative space and the material forms of serialized narratives across specific medias. By looking at the intersection of the textual construction of storyworld space, the serialized form, and the materiality of media, this project argues that in both literary and televised contexts, the serialized form plays a key role in shaping the configurations of narrative space in these storyworlds and in constructing their rhetorical and ideological effects. Specifically, the project explores how the textual aspects of serial narratives affect the structure of storyworld spaces and how this affect is crucially tied to rhetorical and interpretive implications in final configurations of the narrative audience. As a result, this project makes connections between the serialized literature produced between 1830-1860 in Victorian England and that of televised narratives produced during the last decade in both Britain and the United States. Each case study is carefully historicized and examines the intersection between the materiality of the texts, their status as mediated objects, and the spatial structure of the narrative they construct

    Illustrations and Text: Storyworld Space and the Multimodality of Serialized Narrative

    This essay examines the interaction between picture and text in the construction of the narrative spaces in George W. M. Reynolds\u27s Mysteries of London (1844–45) and William Harrison Ainsworth\u27s Jack Sheppard (1839) . Building on previous discussions from Gabriel Zoran (1984) and David Herman ( Story Logic, 2002) concerning the process by which space is constructed in verbal/written texts, this essay examines how such theories function in conjunction with the illustrations that often accompanied Victorian serialized narratives in their original publication. Specifically, I consider the interaction between the verbal and visual channels in the construction of interior rooms presented in these two novels and how this interaction is affected by the variance in the physical placement of the illustrations on the material page in relation to the verbal discourse. Thus, I ask to what extent the physical placement of the illustration on the page relative to the placement of verbal discourse that describes the scene interacts with the dialogic created by the two modes of perception in the visual and the verbal channels. Moreover, I show how this interaction prompts readers to recursively reconfigure the construction of the interior spaces as they engage with both narrative modes

    Cartilage on the Move: Cartilage Lineage Tracing During Tadpole Metamorphosis

    The reorganization of cranial cartilages during tadpole metamorphosis is a set of complex processes. The fates of larval cartilage-forming cells (chondrocytes) and sources of adult chondrocytes are largely unknown. Individual larval cranial cartilages may either degenerate or remodel, while many adult cartilages appear to form de novo during metamorphosis. Determining the extent to which adult chondrocytes/cartilages are derived from larval chondrocytes during metamorphosis requires new techniques in chondrocyte lineage tracing. We have developed two transgenic systems to label cartilage cells throughout the body with fluorescent proteins. One system strongly labels early tadpole cartilages only. The other system inducibly labels forming cartilages at any developmental stage. We examined cartilages of the skull (viscero- and neurocranium), and identified larval cartilages that either resorb or remodel into adult cartilages. Our data show that the adult otic capsules, tecti anterius and posterius, hyale, and portions of Meckel\u27s cartilage are derived from larval chondrocytes. Our data also suggest that most adult cartilages form de novo, though we cannot rule out the potential for extreme larval chondrocyte proliferation or de- and re-differentiation, which could dilute our fluorescent protein signal. The transgenic lineage tracing strategies developed here are the first examples of inducible, skeleton-specific, lineage tracing in Xenopus

    Research Update : Hard carbon with closed pores from pectin-free apple pomace waste for Na-ion batteries

    Herein, we report a hard carbon derived from industrial bio-waste, i.e., pectin-free apple pomace. The structural, morphological, and electrochemical properties of the hard carbon are reported. The impact of the bio-waste on the closed porosity is discussed, providing valuable insights into the sodium storage mechanism in hard carbons. Most importantly, the hard carbon delivers good electrochemical performance, high specific capacities of 285 mAh g−1, and a very good capacity retention of 96% after 230 cycles at 0.1 C

    High performance Na0.5[Ni0.23Fe0.13Mn0.63]O2 cathode for sodium-ion battery

    The synthesis of a new layered cathode material, Na0.5[Ni0.23Fe0.13Mn0.63]O2, and its characterization in terms of crystalline structure and electrochemical performance in a sodium cell, is reported. X-ray diffraction studies and high resolution SEM images reveal a well-defined P2-type layered structure, while the electrochemical tests evidence excellent characteristics in terms of high capacity, extending up to 200 mAh g-1, and cycle life, up to 70 cycles. This performance, in addition to the low cost and environmental compatibility of its component, poses Na0.5[Ni0.23Fe0.13Mn0.63]O2 among the best promising materials for the next generation of sodium ion batteries
