Surface Brightness of Starbursts at Low and High Redshifts
Observations in the rest frame ultraviolet from various space missions are
used to define the nearby starburst regions having the highest surface
brightness on scales of several hundred pc. The bright limit is found to be
6x10^-16 ergs/cm^2-s-A-arcsec^2 for rest frame wavelength of 1830 A. Surface
brightness in the brightest pixel is measured for 18 galaxies in the Hubble
Deep Field having z > 2.2. After correcting for cosmological dimming, we find
that the high redshift starbursts have intrinsic ultraviolet surface brightness
that is typically four times brighter than low redshift starbursts. It is not
possible to conclude whether this difference is caused by decreased dust
obscuration in the high redshift starburst regions or by intrinsically more
intense star formation. Surface brightness enhancement of starburst regions may
be the primary factor for explaining the observed increase with redshift of the

A z=5.34 Galaxy Pair in the Hubble Deep Field
We present spectrograms of the faint V-drop (V(606) = 28.1, I(814) = 25.6)
galaxy pair HDF3-951.1 and HDF3-951.2 obtained at the Keck II Telescope.
Fernandez-Soto, Lanzetta, & Yahil (1998) derive a photometric redshift of z(ph)
= 5.28 (+0.34,-0.41; 2 sigma) for these galaxies; our integrated spectrograms
show a large and abrupt discontinuity near 7710 (+- 5) Angstroms. This break is
almost certainly due to the Lyman alpha forest as its amplitude (1 - fnu(short)
/ fnu(long) > 0.87; 95% confidence limit) exceeds any discontinuities observed
in stellar or galaxian rest-frame optical spectra. The resulting
absorption-break redshift is z=5.34 (+- 0.01). Optical/near-IR photometry from
the HDF yields an exceptionally red (V(606)-I(814)) color, consistent with this
large break. A more accurate measure of the continuum depression blueward of
Lyman alpha utilizing the imaging photometry yields D(A) = 0.88.
The system as a whole is slightly brighter than L*(1500) relative to the z~3
Lyman break population and the total star formation rate inferred from the UV
continuum is ~22 h(50)^-2 M(sun) yr^-1 (q(0) = 0.5) assuming the absence of
dust extinction. The two individual galaxies are quite small (size scales < 1
h(50)^-1 kpc). Thus these galaxies superficially resemble the Pascarelle etal
(1996) ``building blocks''; if they comprise a gravitationally bound system,

Concepts for Life Cycle Cost Control Required to Achieve Space Transportation Affordability and Sustainability
Cost control must be implemented through the establishment of requirements and controlled continually by managing to these requirements. Cost control of the non-recurring side of life cycle cost has traditionally been implemented in both commercial and government programs. The government uses the budget process to implement this control. The commercial approach is to use a similar process of allocating the non-recurring cost to major elements of the program. This type of control generally manages through a work breakdown structure (WBS) by defining the major elements of the program. If the cost control is to be applied across the entire program life cycle cost (LCC), the approach must be addressed very differently. A functional breakdown structure (FBS) is defined and recommended. Use of a FBS provides the visibifity to allow the choice of an integrated solution reducing the cost of providing many different elements of like function. The different functional solutions that drive the hardware logistics, quantity of documentation, operational labor, reliability and maintainability balance, and total integration of the entire system from DDT&E through the life of the program must be fully defined, compared, and final decisions made among these competing solutions. The major drivers of recurring cost have been identified and are presented and discussed. The LCC requirements must be established and flowed down to provide control of LCC. This LCC control will require a structured rigid process similar to the one traditionally used to control weight/performance for space transportation systems throughout the entire program. It has been demonstrated over the last 30 years that without a firm requirement and methodically structured cost control, it is unlikely that affordable and sustainable space transportation system LCC will be achieved
Semiclassical Stability of the Extreme Reissner-Nordstrom Black Hole
The stress-energy tensor of a free quantized scalar field is calculated in
the extreme Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m black hole spacetime in the zero temperature
vacuum state. The stress-energy appears to be regular on the event horizon,
contrary to the suggestion provided by two-dimensional calculations. An
analytic calculation on the event horizon for a thermal state shows that if the

Loving and Loathing Physical Education: An Exploration of Students’ Beliefs
This article describes a recent study that investigated the physical education (PE) beliefs of a particular population of students (i.e., female and male students in Grades 4 through 10 from a single school stream). Through their completion of an adapted survey, students (N = 506) were able to share their PE beliefs in relation to five separate subscales: PE Interest, PE Status, PE Connotations, PE Teachers, and PE Curriculum. Results suggest that grade and gender differences exist with respect to these subscales. Consequently, it is herein suggested that the discovery of such differences within this case study merits considerations for educational change, as well as continued and deeper inquiries into understanding the nature of PE beliefs for female and male students in various grade levels. Par le biais d'une enquête adaptée, les élèves (N = 506) ont partagé leurs croyances sur l'éducation physique en fonction de cinq sous-échelles séparées: intérêt, statut, sens affectifs, enseignants et curriculum. Les résultats donnent à penser qu'il existe, par rapport à ces sous-échelles, des différences liées à l'année scolaire et au genre. On propose donc que les différences révélées par cette étude de cas méritent d'être considérées dans le contexte de changements pédagogiques et d'être étudiées en profondeur et à long terme pour comprendre la nature des croyances d'élèves, filles et garçons et à divers années scolaires, relatives à l'éducation physique
Photometric Observations of Three High Mass X-Ray Binaries and a Search for Variations Induced by Orbital Motion
We searched for long period variation in V-band, Ic-band and RXTE X-ray light
curves of the High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) LS 1698 / RX J1037.5-5647, HD
110432 / 1H 1249-637 and HD 161103 / RX J1744.7-2713 in an attempt to discover
orbitally induced variation. Data were obtained primarily from the ASAS
database and were supplemented by shorter term observations made with the 24-
and 40-inch ANU telescopes and one of the robotic PROMPT telescopes. Fourier
periodograms suggested the existence of long period variation in the V-band
light curves of all three HMXBs, however folding the data at those periods did
not reveal convincing periodic variation. At this point we cannot rule out the
existence of long term V-band variation for these three sources and hints of
longer term variation may be seen in the higher precision PROMPT data. Long
term V-band observations, on the order of several years, taken at a frequency
of at least once per week and with a precision of 0.01 mag, therefore still
have a chance of revealing long term variation in these three HMXBs.Comment: Accepted, RAA, May, 201
Software Citation Implementation Challenges
The main output of the FORCE11 Software Citation working group
(https://www.force11.org/group/software-citation-working-group) was a paper on
software citation principles (https://doi.org/10.7717/peerj-cs.86) published in
September 2016. This paper laid out a set of six high-level principles for
software citation (importance, credit and attribution, unique identification,
persistence, accessibility, and specificity) and discussed how they could be
used to implement software citation in the scholarly community. In a series of
talks and other activities, we have promoted software citation using these
increasingly accepted principles. At the time the initial paper was published,
we also provided guidance and examples on how to make software citable, though
we now realize there are unresolved problems with that guidance. The purpose of
this document is to provide an explanation of current issues impacting
scholarly attribution of research software, organize updated implementation
guidance, and identify where best practices and solutions are still needed
Glucose-induced down regulation of thiamine transporters in the kidney proximal tubular epithelium produces thiamine insufficiency in diabetes
Increased renal clearance of thiamine (vitamin B1) occurs in experimental and clinical diabetes producing thiamine insufficiency mediated by impaired tubular re-uptake and linked to the development of diabetic nephropathy. We studied the mechanism of impaired renal re-uptake of thiamine in diabetes. Expression of thiamine transporter proteins THTR-1 and THTR-2 in normal human kidney sections examined by immunohistochemistry showed intense polarised staining of the apical, luminal membranes in proximal tubules for THTR-1 and THTR-2 of the cortex and uniform, diffuse staining throughout cells of the collecting duct for THTR-1 and THTR-2 of the medulla. Human primary proximal tubule epithelial cells were incubated with low and high glucose concentration, 5 and 26 mmol/l, respectively. In high glucose concentration there was decreased expression of THTR-1 and THTR-2 (transporter mRNA: −76% and −53% respectively, p<0.001; transporter protein −77% and −83% respectively, p<0.05), concomitant with decreased expression of transcription factor specificity protein-1. High glucose concentration also produced a 37% decrease in apical to basolateral transport of thiamine transport across cell monolayers. Intensification of glycemic control corrected increased fractional excretion of thiamine in experimental diabetes. We conclude that glucose-induced decreased expression of thiamine transporters in the tubular epithelium may mediate renal mishandling of thiamine in diabetes. This is a novel mechanism of thiamine insufficiency linked to diabetic nephropathy
Studying the effects of thalamic interneurons in a thalamocortical neural mass model
Neural mass models of the thalamocortical circuitry are
often used to mimic brain activity during sleep and
wakefulness as observed in scalp electroencephalogram
(EEG) signals [1]. It is understood that alpha rhythms
(8-13 Hz) dominate the EEG power-spectra in the resting-state
[2] as well as the period immediately before
sleep [3]. Literature review shows that the thalamic
interneurons (IN) are often ignored in thalamocortical
population models; the emphasis is on the connections
between the thalamo cortical relay (TCR) and the thalamic
reticular nucleus (TRN). In this work, we look into
the effects of the IN cell population on the behaviour of
an existing thalamocortical model containing the TCR
and TRN cell populations [4]. A schematic of the
extended model used in this work is shown in Fig.1.
The model equations are solved in Matlab using the
Runge-Kutta method of the 4th/5th order. The model
shows high sensitivity to the forward and reverse rates
of reactions during synaptic transmission as well as on
the membrane conductance of the cell populations. The
input to the model is a white noise signal simulating
conditions of resting state with eyes closed, a condition
well known to be associated with dominant alpha band
oscillations in EEG e.g. [5]. Thus, the model parameters
are calibrated to obtain a set of basal parameter values
when the model oscillates with a dominant frequency
within the alpha band. The time series plots and the
power spectra of the model output are compared with
those when the IN cell population is disconnected from
the circuit (by setting the inhibitory connectivity parameter
from the IN to the TCR to zero). We observe
(Fig. 2 inset) a significant difference in time series output
of the TRN cell population with and without the IN
cell population in the model; this in spite of the IN
having no direct connectivity to and from the TRN cell
population (Fig. 1). A comparison of the power spectra
behaviour of the model output within the delta
(1-3.5Hz), theta (3.75-7.5Hz), alpha (7.75-13.5Hz) and
beta (13.75-30.5Hz) bands is shown in Fig. 2. Disconnecting
the IN cell population shows a significant drop in the
alpha band power and the dominant frequency of oscillation
now lies within the theta band. An overall ‘slowing’
(left-side shift) of the power spectra is observed with an
increase within the delta and theta bands and a decrease
in the alpha and beta bands. Such a slowing of EEG is a
signature of slow wave sleep in healthy individuals, and
this suggests that the IN cell population may be centrally
involved in the phase transition to slow wave sleep [6]. It
is also characteristic of the waking EEG in Alzheimer’s
disease, and may help us to understand the role of the IN
cell population in modulating TCR and TRN cell behaviour
in pathological brain conditions
