Recombining dependent data: an Order Statistics

This article discusses the problem of forming groups from previously split data. Algorithms for Cluster Analysis like SAR proposed by Peña, Rodriguez and Tiao (2004), divide the sample into small very homogeneous groups and then recombine them to form the definitive data configuration. This kind of splitting leads to dependent data in the sense that the groups are disjoint, so no traditional homogeneity of means or variances tests can be used. We propose an alternative by using Order Statistics. Studying the distribution and some moments of linear combination of Order Statistics it is possible to recombine disjoint data groups when they merge into a sample from the same population.SAR, Cluster Analysis, Order Statistics, L-statistics, Bootstrapping

Marketing practices and performance in a post-crisis scenario

This research explores the link between contemporary marketing practices, market orientation and business performance in Uruguay, an emergent country that has recovered from an economic crisis. These approaches seem to be related, but there is no existing evidence to confirm this impression. Lessons can be learned from understanding how effective is the adoption of marketing practices under a crisis scenario. Using data from interviews with 143 micro and small enterprises’ managers, we identify three clusters dependant on the combination of marketing practices: a multi-marketing cluster, a medium-level relationship marketing cluster and a transactional cluster. A model relating market orientation components and various performance measures is tested for the three clusters, showing that the multi-marketing and transactional clusters are more effective in translating efforts and resources into business outcomes

Towards Flight Trials for an Autonomous UAV Emergency Landing using Machine Vision

This paper presents the evolution and status of a number of research programs focussed on developing an automated fixed wing UAV landing system. Results obtained in each of the three main areas of research as vision-based site identification, path and trajectory planning and multi-criteria decision making are presented. The results obtained provide a baseline for further refinements and constitute the starting point for the implementation of a prototype system ready for flight testing

Self, subjectivity, and impetus for Latino self-transformation in the writings of Kierkegaard, The

2010 Fall.Includes bibliographical references.The following thesis will explore the relationship between the conceptions of the self and subjectivity in writings of 19th century Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and the contemporary problem of Latino male self-transformation. Kierkegaard's conception of the self will take Sickness Unto Death (1849) as the focal point, while Kierkegaard's conception of subjectivity will be explored in Concluding Unscientific Postscript (1846). First, I will discuss three aspects of Kierkegaard's dialectical self: the irresolute self, the resolute self, and the religious dependent self. Second, after these aspects of the self are discussed, I turn my attention to Kierkegaard's conception of subjectivity. The discussion on subjectivity will explore four perspectives of subjectivity: objective and subjective thinking, subjectivity and indirect communication, subjectivity as inwardness, existence, and passion, and lastly subjectivity and truth. Third, I discuss David T. Abalos' theory of transformation in The Latino Male: A Radical Redefinition (2002). My discussion of Abalos' theory of transformation will focus on the Three Acts of the Core Drama of Life in its application to Latino male self-transformation. My aim is to take Kierkegaard's remarks on the self and subjectivity and apply them to Abalos' theory of Latino male self-transformation. I attempt to demonstrate that Kierkegaard's remarks on these issues can inform and aid in the conversation of the contemporary problem of Latino male self-transformation. Thus, I argue that Kierkegaard's remarks on the self and subjectivity are not only invaluable to this contemporary problem, but can provide impetus for Latino male self-transformation

La transformación de rotación en el espacio: diseño curricular e integración en el aula del ambiente de geometría dinámica Cabri 3D

Se busca generar una discusión sobre el proceso de diseño y sistematización de una experiencia de aula en la cual se integra el Ambiente de Geometría Dinámica (AGD) Cabri 3D en el aprendizaje de la transformación de rotación en el espacio. En nuestra propuesta, encontramos investigaciones importantes en didáctica de las matemáticas que han puesto en evidencia las dificultades que los estudiantes presentan comúnmente en la exploración de propiedades de los objetos geométricos en el espacio, e incluso la representación de los mismos en él. Por lo cual, la comunicación se apoya en una aproximación instrumental que busca dar cuenta del papel mediador de Cabri 3D como un instrumento construido por el sujeto en el contexto de aprendizaje de la geometría. La propuesta se basa en el diseño de una situación didáctica en la que se integra el AGD Cabri 3D; hemos introducido una categoría que caracteriza el objeto matemático a movilizar en la secuencia de situaciones didácticas, esta categoría es la transformación de rotación en el espacio. La primera caracterización debe darse desde el reconocimiento de la Geometría transformacional como una alternativa para que los estudiantes construyan conocimiento del espacio a partir de la exploración y actuación sobre el mismo, así en la propuesta de la secuencia didáctica se tomara en consideración que la transformación de rotación posibilita la exploración de aspectos complejos tales como el sentido, la magnitud angular y la invarianza de propiedades. Esta última (la invarianza de propiedades) es uno de los aspectos más importante que se deberán distinguir en el diseño de la secuencia didáctica; en la composición de rotaciones por ejemplo, se reconoce como importante que los estudiantes tengan la capacidad de poder determinar cuáles objetos geométricos, puestos en juego en la transformación, conservan sus propiedades, así como poder determinar dentro de la rotación qué se conserva invariante. La segunda caracterización es el reconocimiento de la visualización como medio para que el estudiante interprete la información gráfica de conceptos matemáticos que se le presentan, con el fin de resolver un problema y realizar conjeturas acerca de la noción matemática que está trabajando. La experiencia de las enfermeras ante la muerte

Trabajo fin de grado en EnfermeríaIntroducción: Las enfermeras han heredado de la sociedad un concepto histórico de la muerte que en la actualidad se ha convertido en tabú. Esto produce sentimientos negativos cuando enfrentan la muerte de sus pacientes en la práctica diaria. Esta experiencia es común a todas las enfermeras y se encuentra influenciada por diversos factores: la experiencia laboral, unidad de trabajo, creencias religiosas, educación previa y edad del fallecido. Objetivo: analizar las vivencias y experiencias de los profesionales de enfermería ante la muerte de los pacientes que cuidan. Metodología: Se llevó a cabo una búsqueda en 5 bases de datos: Pubmed, Cinahl, Cochrane Library, Cuiden y Scielo. Para ello se usó lenguaje controlado y abierto unido por los operadores booleanos “AND”, “NOT” y “OR”. Se limitó la búsqueda a artículos de los últimos 10 años, en inglés y español, población adulta >19 años y que dispusieran de resumen. Los artículos definitivos se seleccionaron en base a criterios de inclusión y exclusión. Resultados: Se seleccionaron 11 artículos que tras la lectura se clasificaron en 4 categorías temáticas: concepto de muerte, sentimientos ante la muerte de los pacientes, actitudes hacia la muerte de los pacientes y creencias hacia la muerte. Conclusiones: Los conceptos de muerte desarrollados por las enfermeras condicionan su actividad laboral, las actitudes más frecuentes ante la muerte son: distanciamiento, evitación/huida y disociación emocional. La educación contribuye a mejorar las experiencias de las enfermeras ante la muerte, proporcionando herramientas útiles para afrontarla en su trabajo diario.Introduction: Nurses have inherited from the society a historical concept of death that currently has turned into taboo. This produces negative feelings when they face the patients death in their daily practice. This experience is common to all nurses and it is influenced by several factors: work experience, work unit, religious beliefs, previous education and age of the deceased. Objective: To analyze the experiences of nurses before the patients death who take care. Method: A search was carried out in 5 databases: Pubmed, Cinahl, Cochrane Library, Cuiden and Scielo. Using controlled and opened language joined by boolean operators “AND”, “OR” and “OR”. The search limited itself to last 10 years articles, in English and Spanish, adult population> 19 years and abstract. The definitive articles were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: There were selected 11 articles, after the reading were qualified in 4 thematic categories: concept of death, feelings towards the patients death, attitudes towards the patients death and beliefs towards death. Conclusion: The death concepts developed by nurses determine their work activity, the most frequent attitudes before the death are: isolation, avoidance/escape and emotional dissociation. The education helps to improve nurses experiences before death, providing useful tools to confront it in their daily work
