Trend, Challenges and Opportunities of Illegal Wildlife Trafficking and Trade Activities within and through Ethiopia
Having improved knowledge on global, regional and/or national trends in illegal wildlife trade is required to develop effective combating strategies. In this paper, nine years (2011–2019) data on illegal wildlife trade and trafficking (iwt) seizure records were used to explore trends in iwt activities in Ethiopia and to identify countries involved most in the iwt. Trends of iwt activities were assessed in two indicators: as relative transaction index (ti), and as relative weight index (for ivory [wi]) or as relative number of items for ivory and other wildlife products [ni]. To account for potential yearly variations in seizure rates, proxy variables to law enforcement efforts and effectiveness were used and predictive models that produced bias-adjusted estimates of relative trends in iwt activities were built. To explore the underlying reasons for the trend observed, relevant national officers were also interviewed to assess how well has been wildlife law enforcement working in combatting iwt in the country. Linear or polynomial regressions, where appropriate, were fitted to the seizure data to establish trends in transaction index over the nine years. A total of 842 incidences of iwt seizure instance reports, involving 18 animal species, were recorded in the country during the nine years period. However, the highest seizure (94%) rate was ivory and ivory products. Our results generally showed declining trends in both ti and wi or ni. The observed trend was also supported by the experts’ opinions and likely reflects the positive impacts of the country’s implementation of its wildlife laws. Other interesting findings of this study were that China represented the single most important destination country and Chinese nationalities were the most traffickers. In conclusion, the results provide detailed evidence to inform national and international decision making on key species implicated in the illegal trade. Similar periodic assessment of the situation of iwt within the country is needed to evaluate effectiveness of the country’s past and present measures and to revise its future combatting policies and strategies
Artificially Intelligent Medical Assistant Robot (AIMAR)
Healthcare providers face financial, regulatory, and logistical obstacles in supplying quality care. Applying robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) to healthcare reduces demands on providers, increases accuracy by supplementing medical diagnoses, and improves patient outcomes. Team AIMAR (Artificially Intelligent Medical Assistant Robot) has constructed a modular robotic healthcare AI system, consisting of advanced diagnostic features as supplements to a generic base. The team focused on analyzing images with machine learning to identify skin conditions. The base robot can move around the home or hospital, pick up objects, and interact with patients and doctors. The patient can log in using face authentication so that patient data is secure, and interact verbally and visually through the user interface. Exploring providers’ perspectives of a community based TB approach in Southern Ethiopia: implication for community based approaches
Abstract
Background
There is increasing interest in the role of close-to-community providers in supporting universal health coverage, but questions remain about the best approaches to supporting and motivating these providers, and the optimal package they can deliver indifferent contexts and support required. We report on the experiences of different health providers involved in a community based intervention to support access to tuberculosis diagnosis and treatment in Southern Ethiopia.
Methods
The aim of the study is to explore the experiences of health providers in delivering a community-based tuberculosis package in southern Ethiopia and to draw lessons for community-based programmes. A qualitative methodology was used. Methods included in-depth interviews (IDIs, n= 37) with all health provider groups: Community health promoters (CHPs), health extension workers (HEWs), district supervisors and laboratory technicians were undertaken to obtain a detailed understanding of the experiences of providers in the community based tuberculosis package. These were complemented with cadre specific focus group discussions (n= 3). We used the framework approach for qualitative analysis.
Results
The key theme that emerged was the positive impact the community-based intervention had on vulnerable groups’ access to diagnosis, care and treatment for tuberculosis. Providers found the positive feedback from, and visible impact on, communities very motivating. Other themes related to motivation and performance included supervision and support; learning new skills; team problem solving/ addressing challenges and incentives. Against the backdrop of the Ethiopian Health Extension Programme (HEP), HEWs were successfully able to take on new tasks (collecting sputum and preparing smears) with additional training and appropriate support from supervisors, laboratory technicians and CHPs.
Conclusion
All categories of providers were motivated by the high visible impact of the community-based intervention on poor and vulnerable communities and households. HEWs role in the community-based intervention was supported and facilitated through the structures and processes established within the community-based intervention and the broader nation-wide Health Extension Programme. Within community based approaches there is need to develop context embedded strategies to support, sustain and motivate this critical cadre who play a pivotal role in linking health systems and rural communities
Patient and community experiences of tuberculosis diagnosis and care within a community-based intervention in Ethiopia: a qualitative study
Background
The Ethiopian TB control programme relies on passive case finding of TB cases. The predominantly rural-based population in Ethiopia has limited access to health facilities creating barriers to TB services. An intervention package aimed to bring TB diagnosis and treatment services closer to communities has been implemented through partnership with health extension workers (HEWs). They undertook advocacy, communication and social mobilization (ACSM) activities, identified symptomatic individuals, collected sputum, prepared smears and fixed slides at community level. Field supervisors supported HEWs by delivering smeared slides to the laboratory, feeding back results to the HEWs and following up smear-negative cases. Patients diagnosed with TB initiated treatment in the community, they were supported by supervisors and HEWs through the local health post. Case notification increased from 64 to 127/100,000 population/year.
Methods
This qualitative study assessed community members’ treatment seeking behaviour and their perceptions of the intervention. In-depth interviews (n=36) were undertaken with participants in six districts. Participants were clients of the community-based intervention, currently on TB treatment or those screened negative for TB. Transcripts were translated to English and a thematic analytical framework was developed guided by the different steps symptomatic individuals take within the intervention package. Coding was done and queries run using NVivo software.
Results
Prior to the intervention many patients with chronic cough did not access TB services. Participants described difficulties they faced in accessing district level health facilities that required travel outside their communities. Giving sputum samples and receiving results from within their home communities was appreciated by all participants. The intervention had a high level of acceptability; particularly clear benefits emerged for poor women and men and those too weak to travel. Some participants appeared to prefer a diagnosis of TB, this is likely because receiving a negative smear microscopy result brought further uncertainty and necessitated seeking further investigation.
Conclusions
There is evidence rural populations with high levels of poverty, and in particular women, are at high risk of unmet health needs and undiagnosed TB. Embedding TB services within communities was an acceptable approach for vulnerable groups experiencing poor access to health facilities. In the Ethiopian context this approach can facilitate early diagnosis and improve treatment outcomes
Artificially Intelligent Medical Assistant Robot: Automating Data Collection and Diagnostics for Medical Practitioners

quality care. A robotic system can improve patient outcomes and reduce demands on
providers by automating data collection and supplementing medical diagnoses. Team
AIMAR (Artificially Intelligent Medical Assistant Robot) constructed such a system
focusing on three core features: natural language interaction, computer vision, and
mobility. Thus, in addition to developing a robotic base with navigational and
conversational abilities, Team AIMAR implemented two prototype modules: a skin
lesion image classifier and a medical chatbot. Additionally, Team AIMAR created a
framework to test and assess the functionality of the fully integrated system in a
simulated environment. Several directions exist for future work, including expanding
the user interface, improving navigation and sensing capabilities, communicating
with electronic health record systems, and the integration of a physical arm
Generalised massive gravity one-loop partition function and AdS/(L)CFT
The graviton 1-loop partition function is calculated for Euclidean
generalised massive gravity (GMG) using AdS heat kernel techniques. We find
that the results fit perfectly into the AdS/(L)CFT picture. Conformal
Chern-Simons gravity, a singular limit of GMG, leads to an additional
contribution in the 1-loop determinant from the conformal ghost. We show that
this contribution has a nice interpretation on the conformal field theory side
in terms of a semi-classical null vector at level two descending from a primary

All stationary axi-symmetric local solutions of topologically massive gravity
We classify all stationary axi-symmetric solutions of topologically massive
gravity into Einstein, Schr\"odinger, warped and generic solutions. We
construct explicitly all local solutions in the first three sectors and present
an algorithm for the numerical construction of all local solutions in the
generic sector. The only input for this algorithm is the value of one constant
of motion if the solution has an analytic centre, and three constants of motion

Short-cut to new anomalies in gravity duals to logarithmic conformal field theories
Various massive gravity theories in three dimensions are conjecturally dual
to logarithmic conformal field theories (LCFTs). We summarise the status of
these conjectures. LCFTs are characterised by the values of the central charges
and the so-called "new anomalies". We employ a short-cut to calculate these new
anomalies in generalised massive gravity and in the recently proposed
higher-derivative gravity theories with holographic c-theorem. Both cases
permit LCFTs exhibiting intriguing features, like rank three Jordan cells or
non-zero central charges. Finally, as an example we discuss in some detail the
partially massless version of new massive gravity, a theory with several

The Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment: Exploring Fundamental Symmetries of the Universe
The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early Universe, the
dynamics of the supernova bursts that produced the heavy elements necessary for
life and whether protons eventually decay --- these mysteries at the forefront
of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early
evolution of our Universe, its current state and its eventual fate. The
Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) represents an extensively developed
plan for a world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions. LBNE
is conceived around three central components: (1) a new, high-intensity
neutrino source generated from a megawatt-class proton accelerator at Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory, (2) a near neutrino detector just downstream
of the source, and (3) a massive liquid argon time-projection chamber deployed
as a far detector deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research
Facility. This facility, located at the site of the former Homestake Mine in
Lead, South Dakota, is approximately 1,300 km from the neutrino source at
Fermilab -- a distance (baseline) that delivers optimal sensitivity to neutrino
charge-parity symmetry violation and mass ordering effects. This ambitious yet
cost-effective design incorporates scalability and flexibility and can
accommodate a variety of upgrades and contributions. With its exceptional
combination of experimental configuration, technical capabilities, and
potential for transformative discoveries, LBNE promises to be a vital facility
for the field of particle physics worldwide, providing physicists from around
the globe with opportunities to collaborate in a twenty to thirty year program
