Advances in mosquito repellents: effectiveness of citronellal derivatives in laboratory and field trials
BACKGROUND Several essential oils, including citronella (lemongrass, Cymbopogon sp., Poaceae), are well-known mosquito repellents. A drawback of such products is their limited protection time resulting from the high volatility of their active components. In particular, citronella oil protects for <2 h, although formulations with fixatives can increase this time. RESULTS We synthesized hydroxylated cyclic acetals of citronellal, the main component of citronella, to obtain derivatives with lower volatility and weaker odour. The crude mixture of isomers obtained in the reaction was tested under laboratory conditions for its repellency against two mosquito species, the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae and the arbovirus vector Aedes albopictus, and found to be endowed with longer protection time with respect to DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) at the same concentration. Formulated products were tested in a latin square human field trial, in an area at a high density of A. albopictus for 8 h from the application. We found that the performance of the citronellal derivatives mixture is comparable (95% protection for <= 3.5 h) with those of the most widespread synthetic repellents DEET and Icaridin, tested at a four-fold higher doses. CONCLUSIONS Modifying the hydrophilicity and volatility of natural repellents is a valuable strategy to design insect repellents with a long-lasting effect. (c) 2022 The Authors. Increased immunocompetence and network centrality of allogroomer workers suggest a link between individual and social immunity in honeybees.
The significant risk of disease transmission has selected for effective immune-defense strategies in insect societies. Division of labour, with individuals specialized in immunity-related tasks, strongly contributes to prevent the spread of diseases. A trade-off, however, may exist between phenotypic specialization to increase task efficiency and maintenance of plasticity to cope with variable colony demands. We investigated the extent of phenotypic specialization associated with a specific task by using allogrooming in the honeybee, Apis mellifera, where worker behaviour might lower ectoparasites load. We adopted an integrated approach to characterize the behavioural and physiological phenotype of allogroomers, by analyzing their behavior (both at individual and social network level), their immunocompetence (bacterial clearance tests) and their chemosensory specialization (proteomics of olfactory organs). We found that allogroomers have higher immune capacity compared to control bees, while they do not differ in chemosensory proteomic profiles. Behaviourally, they do not show differences in the tasks performed (other than allogrooming), while they clearly differ in connectivity within the colonial social network, having a higher centrality than control bees. This demonstrates the presence of an immune-specific physiological and social behavioural specialization in individuals involved in a social immunity related task, thus linking individual to social immunity, and it shows how phenotypes may be specialized in the task performed while maintaining an overall plasticity
Simple and informative: applying a basic Anthophila monitoring scheme in a simplified insular ecosystem
The decline of pollinators and the consequent decay of pollination services call for the establishment of monitoring schemes for several groups of pollinators. For Anthophila (Hymenoptera), the design of monitoring schemes is still under development. The main difficulties lie in combining a reliable but field-feasible taxonomic identification with the collection of informative data about the consistency and functional role of pollinator populations. Here we report on the application of the Italian monitoring scheme for pollinators recently defined by ISPRA and the University of Turin in agreement with the European Pollinators Monitoring Scheme on the small island of Giannutri (Tuscany), a simplified insular ecosystem with a virtually unknown pollinator community. This island has recently experienced a drastic change in its bee community, as since 2018 honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) hives are regularly moved every year to the island for breeding purposes. In the spring 2021 we established six 250 m long fixed transects and performed a total of 48 surveys (8 for each transect), recording more than 2300 observations of 9 Anthophila bee taxa and the flowers they visited. By using generalised additive mixed models, we showed that the monitoring protocol has a good potential for monitoring Anthophila, as we could verify several expected relationships between Anthophila abundance and abiotic factors (season, hour of the day, distance from the apiary) and biotic factors (abundance of flower resources). More importantly, we verified that A. mellifera represents by far the most frequent Anthophila taxon. Our data do not show evidence for spatial partition between A. mellifera and the other most frequent taxa (Bombus terrestris L. and Anthophora spp.). The visit network based on transect observations also showed that these taxa largely overlapped in terms of visits to flower resources. Overall, our data showed that the monitoring protocol allows gathering informative data about Anthophila taxa abundance, interactions and flower-visits. Moreover, the spatial and flower-visit overlap suggest potential for competition between honey bees and wild pollinators, with a potential consequent resource depletion for the latter. While this hypothesis could only be assessed by a long-term monitoring and ad hoc honey bee removal experiments, our data show that this basic monitoring protocol produces rapid and valuable information about Anthophila community and dynamics
Genetic reduction of antinutrients in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seed, increases nutrients and in vitro iron bioavailability without depressing main agronomic traits
In common bean, lectins, phytic acid, polyphenols and tannins exert major antinutritional effects when
grains are consumed as a staple food. Reduced iron and zinc absorption, low protein digestibility and high
toxicity at the intestinal level are the causes of their antinutritional effect. To improve grain nutritional
characteristics, the âlow phytic acidâ (lpa) trait recently obtained in bean and carried by the bean mutant
lpa-280-10, was introgressed into different lectin-free (lf) lines, a few of which were white-seeded. The
âwhite seed coatâ (wsc) trait is correlated with a reduced amount of tannins and polyphenols in bean seed,
and thus higher Fe bioavailability. Lf + lpa bean lines producing colored and white seeds, were developed.
Three of these lines were submitted to a first field performance test carried out in two Italian locations, and
two of them to biochemical analyses that evaluated fourteen nutritional parameters. Seedling emergence
and grain yield of lf + lpa beans were statistically comparable to those of wild type cultivars, confirming the
absence of major agronomic defects associated with the lpa trait. The presence of the three genetic traits
lf, lpa and wsc in the same genetic background leads to a significant increase of the content of important
nutrients such as crude proteins, total zinc, free phosphorus, and, in part, total iron. Iron bioavailability (as
measured in vitro via a Caco-2 cell model) in lf + lpa brown and black seeds, was not significantly different
from that surveyed in the wild type colored parents, while, it was on average twelve times higher in
lf + lpa white bean seeds. Up to now, the white-seeded lf + lpa beans seem thus to be the only materials
having really improved nutritional qualities
Autoimmunity in Long Covid and POTS.
Orthostatic intolerance and other autonomic dysfunction syndromes are emerging as distinct symptom clusters in Long Covid. Often accompanying these are common, multi-system constitutional features such as fatigue, malaise and skin rashes which can signify generalized immune dysregulation. At the same time, multiple autoantibodies are identified in both Covid-related autonomic disorders and non-Covid autonomic disorders, implying a possible underlying autoimmune pathology. The lack of specificity of these findings precludes direct interpretations of cause and association, but their prevalence with its supporting evidence is compelling
Subset currents on free groups
We introduce and study the space of \emph{subset currents} on the free group
. A subset current on is a positive -invariant locally finite
Borel measure on the space of all closed subsets of consisting of at least two points. While ordinary geodesic currents
generalize conjugacy classes of nontrivial group elements, a subset current is
a measure-theoretic generalization of the conjugacy class of a nontrivial
finitely generated subgroup in , and, more generally, in a word-hyperbolic
group. The concept of a subset current is related to the notion of an
"invariant random subgroup" with respect to some conjugacy-invariant
probability measure on the space of closed subgroups of a topological group. If
we fix a free basis of , a subset current may also be viewed as an
-invariant measure on a "branching" analog of the geodesic flow space for
, whose elements are infinite subtrees (rather than just geodesic lines)

Post-traumatic stress symptoms and burnout in healthcare professionals working in neonatal intensive care units: Results from the STRONG study
BackgroundNewbornsâ deaths and life-threatening conditions represent extremely stressful events for parents and professionals working in NICUs, facilitating the onset of secondary traumatic stress symptoms. The STRONG study aims to better understand the psychological impact on Italian NICUs staff of bereavement care.MethodsThe STRONG (STress afteR lOss in NeonatoloGy) study is a cross-sectional study based on a web survey consisted of four sections: sociodemographic, CommuniCARE-Newborn questionnaire, the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Impact of Event Scale-Revised.Results227 NICU workers (42.7% nurses, 23.3% midwives, 22.2% physicians, 11.8% other HCPs) answered the survey. The hardest tasks were âcommunicating babyâs deathâ and âinforming on autopsy resultsâ; 44.7% of HCPs did not receive formal training in communicating bad news, 44.2% âlearned from the fieldâ by watching other colleagues; 41.2% declared that they do not have any communication strategy. More than 90% of professionals thought that training on bereavement care is necessary. The majority of HCPs showed some degree of post-traumatic stress symptoms: 34% medium and 35.3% severe. Professionals with training in bereavement care and/or in communication had less probability to develop stress symptoms. A multivariate analysis showed that higher levels of burnout were associated with 4 or more monthly losses and medium or severe stress symptoms. Having a well-defined communication strategy for breaking bad news was independently associated with a better personal accomplishment.ConclusionDealing with newbornsâ deaths is a highly stressful task; professionals should receive proper support such as debriefing, psychological support and training in order to prevent post-traumatic stress symptoms and reduce professional burnout.</p
