Genome-wide Integrative Analysis of Zika-Virus-Infected Neuronal Stem Cells Reveals Roles for MicroRNAs in Cell Cycle and Stemness.
Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is implicated in severe fetal developmental disorders, including microcephaly. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) post-transcriptionally regulate numerous processes associated with viral infection and neurodegeneration, but their contribution to ZIKV pathogenesis is unclear. We analyzed the mRNA and miRNA transcriptomes of human neuronal stem cells (hNSCs) during infection with ZIKV MR766 and Paraiba strains. Integration of the miRNA and mRNA expression data into regulatory interaction networks showed that ZIKV infection resulted in miRNA-mediated repression of genes regulating the cell cycle, stem cell maintenance, and neurogenesis. Bioinformatics analysis of Argonaute-bound RNAs in ZIKV-infected hNSCs identified a number of miRNAs with predicted involvement in microcephaly, including miR-124-3p, which dysregulates NSC maintenance through repression of the transferrin receptor (TFRC). Consistent with this, ZIKV infection upregulated miR-124-3p and downregulated TFRC mRNA in ZIKV-infected hNSCs and mouse brain tissue. These data provide insights into the roles of miRNAs in ZIKV pathogenesis, particularly the microcephaly phenotype
Pairing effect on the giant dipole resonance width at low temperature
The width of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) at finite temperature T in
Sn-120 is calculated within the Phonon Damping Model including the neutron
thermal pairing gap determined from the modified BCS theory. It is shown that
the effect of thermal pairing causes a smaller GDR width at T below 2 MeV as
compared to the one obtained neglecting pairing. This improves significantly
the agreement between theory and experiment including the most recent data

Giant-dipole Resonance and the Deformation of Hot, Rotating Nuclei
The development of nuclear shapes under the extreme conditions of high spin
and/or temperature is examined. Scaling properties are used to demonstrate
universal properties of both thermal expectation values of nuclear shapes as
well as the minima of the free energy, which can be used to understand the
Jacobi transition. A universal correlation between the width of the giant
dipole resonance and quadrupole deformation is found, providing a novel probe

Antibiotic resistance in Staphylococcus aureus-containing cutaneous abscesses of patients with HIV
PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to document the resistance patterns found in exudates from cutaneous abscesses of HIV-infected persons.
BASIC PROCEDURES: Patient records were reviewed on 93 culture and sensitivity tests performed on exudates taken from incised and drained abscesses of HIV-infected persons.
MAIN FINDINGS: Of the specimens, 84.6% were Staphylococcus aureus. Of these, 93.5% were penicillin resistant, 87% oxacillin resistant, 84.4% cephazolin resistant, 84.4% erythromycin resistant, 52.2% ciprofloxacin resistant, and 15.6% tetracycline resistant. Fifty-eight specimens were tested for clindamycin with 29.3% found resistant; 85.7% were methicillin-resistant S aureus (MRSA) (defined as resistant to both penicillin G and oxacillin). All specimens were resistant to multiple antibiotics including antimicrobials that might be considered for use in MRSA. No specimens were resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, rifampin, or vancomycin.
CONCLUSIONS: Empiric antimicrobial therapy of HIV-infected persons with cutaneous abscesses must be tailored to the high frequency of antimicrobial drug resistance including MRSA in this population
A Unified Quantum NOT Gate
We study the feasibility of implementing a quantum NOT gate (approximate)
when the quantum state lies between two latitudes on the Bloch's sphere and
present an analytical formula for the optimized 1-to- quantum NOT gate. Our
result generalizes previous results concerning quantum NOT gate for a quantum
state distributed uniformly on the whole Bloch sphere as well as the phase
covariant quantum state. We have also shown that such 1-to- optimized NOT
gate can be implemented using a sequential generation scheme via matrix product
states (MPS)
Bounded Verification with On-the-Fly Discrepancy Computation
Simulation-based verification algorithms can provide formal safety guarantees
for nonlinear and hybrid systems. The previous algorithms rely on user provided
model annotations called discrepancy function, which are crucial for computing
reachtubes from simulations. In this paper, we eliminate this requirement by
presenting an algorithm for computing piece-wise exponential discrepancy
functions. The algorithm relies on computing local convergence or divergence
rates of trajectories along a simulation using a coarse over-approximation of
the reach set and bounding the maximal eigenvalue of the Jacobian over this
over-approximation. The resulting discrepancy function preserves the soundness
and the relative completeness of the verification algorithm. We also provide a
coordinate transformation method to improve the local estimates for the
convergence or divergence rates in practical examples. We extend the method to
get the input-to-state discrepancy of nonlinear dynamical systems which can be
used for compositional analysis. Our experiments show that the approach is
effective in terms of running time for several benchmark problems, scales
reasonably to larger dimensional systems, and compares favorably with respect
to available tools for nonlinear models.Comment: 24 page
Desarrollo de mezclas de aceites de nuez y almendra para mejorar la estabilidad nutricional y oxidativa
For the increase in oxidative stability and phytonutrient contents of walnut oil (WO), 5, 10, 20 and 30% blends with almond oil (AO) were prepared. The fatty acid compositions and the micronutrients of the oil samples such as tocopherol, phytosterol and squalene were measured by GC-MS and HPLC. It was found that the proportions of PUFAs/SFAs in blended oils with high AO contents were lowered, and the blends contained higher levels of tocopherols, phytosterols and squalene than those of pure WO. The 60 °C oven accelerated oxidation test was used to determine the oxidative stability of the blended oil. The fatty acid composition, micronutrients and oxidation products were determined. The results showed that the oxidation stability of the blended oil increased with an increasing proportion of AO. In addition, a significant negative correlation between micronutrient and oxidation products was observed as the number of days of oxidation increased.Para el aumento de la estabilidad oxidativa y los contenidos de fitonutrientes del aceite de nuez (WO) se prepararon mezclas al 5, 10, 20 y 30% con aceite de almendras (AO). La composición de ácidos grasos y los micronutrientes de las muestras de aceite como tocoferoles, fitosteroles y escualeno se midieron por GC-MS y HPLC. Se descubrió que la relación de PUFA / SFA en un aceite mezclado con un alto contenido de AO se redujo, y la mezcla contenía niveles más altos de tocoferoles, fitosteroles y escualeno que los de WO puro. La prueba de oxidación acelerada en horno de 60 °C se usó para determinar la estabilidad oxidativa del aceite mezclado. Se determinaron la composición de ácidos grasos, micronutrientes y productos de oxidación. Meningeal Infiltration of the Spinal Cord by Non-Classically Activated B Cells is Associated with Chronic Disease Course in a Spontaneous B Cell-Dependent Model of CNS Autoimmune Disease
We characterized B cell infiltration of the spinal cord in a B cell-dependent spontaneous model of central nervous system (CNS) autoimmunity that develops in a proportion of mice with mutant T and B cell receptors specific for myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein. We found that, while males are more likely to develop disease, females are more likely to have a chronic rather than monophasic disease course. B cell infiltration of the spinal cord was investigated by histology and FACs. CD4+ T cell infiltration was pervasive throughout the white and in some cases gray matter. B cells were almost exclusively restricted to the meninges, often in clusters reminiscent of those described in human multiple sclerosis. These clusters were typically found adjacent to white matter lesions and their presence was associated with a chronic disease course. Extensive investigation of these clusters by histology did not identify features of lymphoid follicles, including organization of T and B cells into separate zones, CD35+ follicular dendritic cells, or germinal centers. The majority of cluster B cells were IgD+ with little evidence of class switch. Consistent with this, B cells isolated from the spinal cord were of the naïve/memory CD38hi CD95lo phenotype. Nevertheless, they were CD62Llo and CD80hi compared to lymph node B cells suggesting that they were at least partly activated and primed to present antigen. Therefore, if meningeal B cells contribute to CNS pathology in autoimmunity, follicular differentiation is not necessary for the pathogenic mechanism
A Bogomol`nyi equation for intersecting domain walls
We argue that the Wess-Zumino model with quartic superpotential admits static
solutions in which three domain walls intersect at a junction. We derive an
energy bound for such junctions and show that configurations saturating it
