    Luby Transform Coding Aided Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation for the Wireless Internet

    Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation using Iterative Decoding (BICM-ID) is amalgamated with Luby Transform (LT) coding. The resultant joint design of the physical and data link layer substantially improves the attainable Bit Error Rate (BER) performance. A Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) combined with a novel Log-Likelihood Ratio (LLR) based packet reliability estimation method is proposed for the sake of detecting and disposing of erroneous packets. Subsequently, bit-by-bit LT decoding is proposed, which facilitates a further BER improvement at a lower number of BICM-ID iterations. Finally, we revisit the pseudo random generator function used for designing the LT generator matrix

    Enriching Knowledge Bases with Counting Quantifiers

    Information extraction traditionally focuses on extracting relations between identifiable entities, such as . Yet, texts often also contain Counting information, stating that a subject is in a specific relation with a number of objects, without mentioning the objects themselves, for example, "California is divided into 58 counties". Such counting quantifiers can help in a variety of tasks such as query answering or knowledge base curation, but are neglected by prior work. This paper develops the first full-fledged system for extracting counting information from text, called CINEX. We employ distant supervision using fact counts from a knowledge base as training seeds, and develop novel techniques for dealing with several challenges: (i) non-maximal training seeds due to the incompleteness of knowledge bases, (ii) sparse and skewed observations in text sources, and (iii) high diversity of linguistic patterns. Experiments with five human-evaluated relations show that CINEX can achieve 60% average precision for extracting counting information. In a large-scale experiment, we demonstrate the potential for knowledge base enrichment by applying CINEX to 2,474 frequent relations in Wikidata. CINEX can assert the existence of 2.5M facts for 110 distinct relations, which is 28% more than the existing Wikidata facts for these relations.Comment: 16 pages, The 17th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC 2018

    Tuning Electrical Conductivity of CNT-PDMS Nanocomposites for Flexible Electronic Applications

    This paper presents a study into the electrical conductivity of multi-wall carbon nanotube-polydimethylsiloxane (MWNT-PDMS) nanocomposite and their dependence on the filler concentration. It is observed that the electrical conductivity of the composites can be tailored by altering the filler concentration. Accordingly, the nanocomposites with filler weight ratio ranging from 1% to 8% were prepared and tested. Finally, the significance of results presented here for flexible pressure sensors and stretchable interconnects for electronic skin applications have been discussed

    A basis of cranking operators for the pairing-plus-quadrupole model

    We investigate the RPA normal-mode coordinates in the pairing-plus-quadrupole model, with an eye on simplifying the application of large amplitude collective motion techniques. At the Hartree-Bogoliubov minimum, the RPA modes are exactly the cranking operators of the collective coordinate approach. We examine the possibility of representing the self-consistent cranking operator by linear combinations of a limited number of one-body operators. We study the Sm nuclei as an example, and find that such representations exist in terms of operators that are state-dependent in a characteristic manner.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, using IOP journal style files, to be published in J.     Remediation of Expansive Soils Using Agricultural Waste Bagasse Ash

    © 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Bagasse is a fibrous material remaining after crushing sugarcane to extract its juice; and bagasse ash is produced after burning bagasse. Improper disposal of this material can create environmental problems around sugar manufacturing plants. Bagasse ash, comprising a high percentage of silica (SiO2), is considered as a sensible pozzolanic material with non-reactive behaviour and has potential to be used in road subgrade stabilisation. One of the main challenges for transportation organisations in Australia is to treat subgrades including expansive soils. Expansive soils exhibit significant movements when the moisture content changes, and hence it causes substantial damage to road pavements constructed over these type of soils. Road engineers need to employ materials having acceptable strength, relatively low price and being eco-friendly. In order to demonstrate the potential ability of bagasse ash in curtailing the adverse effects of expansive soils on roads, an array of experimental tests using bagasse ash have been conducted. In this study to activate and improve the effectiveness of bagasse ash, hydrated lime was used and mixed with black soil samples, collected from Queensland Australia. Samples were prepared using different contents of bagasse ash and hydrated lime (0%, 6%, 10%, 18% and 25% by the dry mass of soil), at a ratio of 3:1, respectively. The results of free swell ratio (FSR) test, unconfined compression strength (UCS) and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests are presented for untreated and treated samples after various curing time periods of 3, 7 and 28 days. The outcomes of these tests clearly demonstrate that stabilisation of expansive soils using bagasse ash and hydrated lime not only improves the strength, but also facilitates to cope with environmental concerns through reduction of sugar industry waste material

    Excitonic properties of strained wurtzite and zinc-blende GaN/Al(x)Ga(1-x)N quantum dots

    We investigate exciton states theoretically in strained GaN/AlN quantum dots with wurtzite (WZ) and zinc-blende (ZB) crystal structures, as well as strained WZ GaN/AlGaN quantum dots. We show that the strain field significantly modifies the conduction and valence band edges of GaN quantum dots. The piezoelectric field is found to govern excitonic properties of WZ GaN/AlN quantum dots, while it has a smaller effect on WZ GaN/AlGaN, and very little effect on ZB GaN/AlN quantum dots. As a result, the exciton ground state energy in WZ GaN/AlN quantum dots, with heights larger than 3 nm, exhibits a red shift with respect to the bulk WZ GaN energy gap. The radiative decay time of the red-shifted transitions is large and increases almost exponentially from 6.6 ns for quantum dots with height 3 nm to 1100 ns for the quantum dots with height 4.5 nm. In WZ GaN/AlGaN quantum dots, both the radiative decay time and its increase with quantum dot height are smaller than those in WZ GaN/AlN quantum dots. On the other hand, the radiative decay time in ZB GaN/AlN quantum dots is of the order of 0.3 ns, and is almost independent of the quantum dot height. Our results are in good agreement with available experimental data and can be used to optimize GaN quantum dot parameters for proposed optoelectronic applications.Comment: 18 pages, accepted for publication in the Journal of Applied Physic
