Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder at a Pediatric Hospital: A Systematic Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
This review of literature describes the behaviors of hospitalized children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that health care providers find challenging. It also identifies strategies used to address these challenging behaviors. The systematic review of literature identified 34 articles from databases on health care of challenging behaviors of children with ASD. The review identified four categories of challenging behaviors (non-compliance, hyperactivity, sensory defensiveness, self-injury) and several strategies for reducing these behaviors. Partnering with parents to develop strategies is important for children with ASD to deliver timely and safe care

A National Investigation on the Effect of College Readiness Counseling on Postsecondary Outcomes

    Get PDF
The current study utilized the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009, from the National Center for Education Statistics, to conduct a longitudinal investigation into how access to school counseling impacts postsecondary outcomes. Findings indicate that school counselor time spent college readiness counseling, in addition to lower student socioeconomic status and identifying as multiracial, were predictive of lesser odds of college attainment and persistence. The results of the current study offer practice, policy, and training implications

“In all of our differences we are humanly similar”: International service learning (ISL) and interprofessional education (IPE) in Ecuador

    Get PDF
    a. Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to describe the shared experience of interprofessional health profession students participating in a service learning trip to Ecuador. b. Background: Few studies have examined interprofessional service learning (ISL) and interprofessional education (IPE) together. Students in short-term ISL/ IPE projects report an appreciation of the work of other health professions and respect for interprofessional teamwork. These results suggest that IPE occurring during ISL can contribute to development of interprofessional teamwork skills; however, further research examining the link between ISL and IPE is warranted. c. Description of the Program: The complexity of ISL and IPE occurring in an unfamiliar cultural environment is well suited for qualitative inquiry, which takes place within the natural setting. Phenomenology was chosen to investigate the students’ shared experience. Students worked for five days in an impoverished community in Ecuador providing health care at a local community health clinic, satellite sites in the surrounding community, and patient homes. Student’s observed interdisciplinary practice and some students engaged in a collaborative practice model during home visits. Students were interviewed about their interprofessional experiences and data were analyzed using phenomenological methods. d. Results: The ISL and IPE experience demystified other healthcare disciplines while supporting students’ personal and professional development. Four structural themes emerged. e. Conclusion: International service learning provided in an interprofessional context can foster relationships and familiarity among students to break down barriers to interprofessional communication, collaboration and teamwork. f. Relevance to interprofessional education or practice: Recognizing the shared purpose of patient care helped the students to learn more about the role and scope of other disciplines. The experience created a unique opportunity to see other professionals’ scope of practice in action, which served to demystify students’ disciplinary preconceptions and biases and in turn built trust and respect among the team members. g. Learning objectives: 1. Recognize how qualitative phenomenologic research methods may serve as a tool to evaluate ISL and interprofessional education and collaboration activities in health profession students. 2. Discover how international service learning provides a unique opportunity for health profession students to engage interprofessional teamwork. 3. Describe how international service learning provided in an interprofessional context can foster relationships and familiarity among students that serves to break down barriers to interprofessional communication, collaboration and teamwork

Metallurgical and Corrosion Assessment of Submerged Tanker S.S. \u3ci\u3eMontebello\u3c/i\u3e

The Union Oil Tanker S.S. Montebello was torpedoed and sunk six miles (9.7 km) off the coast of Cambria, California by a Japanese submarine on December 23, 1941, two weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor. With close proximity to the National Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary, concern about possible crude oil contamination led to the most recent expedition to the site in October 2011. Assessment of the shell plate found that the average corrosion rate was very low and the structure will remain stable for many decades

Recruitment and baseline characteristics of the Community of Voices choir study to promote the health and well-being of diverse older adults.

Objective:To describe the recruitment and baseline results of the Community of Voices study that aims to examine the effect of a community choir intervention on the health and well-being of older adults from diverse racial/ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Method:Using community-based participatory research methods, we recruited adults age 60 and over from 12 Administration on Aging-supported senior centers in San Francisco into a 2-arm cluster-randomized controlled trial of the community choir intervention. Multiple outreach methods were used. We tracked outreach, screening, and recruitment metrics and collected demographics and baseline outcomes via community-based, interviewer-administered surveys and performance measures of cognition, physical function, and psychosocial variables. Results:The study contacted 819 individuals, screened 636, and enrolled 390 diverse older adults over a 42-month, phased recruitment period. The mean age was 71.2 (SD = 7.3), and the majority were women. Two-thirds of the sample are non-white, and 20% of participants reported having financial hardship. Discussion:Outreach and recruitment methods used in the Community of Voices trial facilitated enrollment of a large proportion of minority and lower-SES older adults in the final sample. Similar recruitment approaches could serve as a model for recruiting diverse racial/ethnic and socioeconomic older adults into research

Antiracism Internship: Applying the Ecological Social Justice School Counseling Theory

    Get PDF
This manuscript describes an empirically designed internship course that utilized the Ecological Social Justice School Counseling theory to teach internship students how to engage in antiracist practice to address social determinants of health in schools. The research reports on the eight school counseling internship students\u27 experiences, through five themes and 12 subthemes, highlighting the ways they increased awareness of SDOH, antiracist practice, and related constructs at their schools and with students including their action toward addressing SDOH, advocacy, barriers, and growth. Implications for counselor educators and site supervisors conclude

Attributed Meanings and Strategies to Prevent Challenging Behaviors of Hospitalized Children with Autism: Two Perspectives

    Get PDF
Introduction Understanding is limited of the meaning attributed to behaviors of children with autism spectrum disorder and strategies used to prevent challenging behaviors in the context of hospitalization. Methods This qualitative study consisted of two focus groups (n = 10; five mothers and five health care providers [HCPs]). Transcripts were analyzed using the qualitative method of narrative inquiry. Results The meaning attributed to behaviors by the mothers and the HCPs differed. The mothers attributed behaviors to the child\u27s communication of frustration, hyperactivity, and self-calming. The HCPs attributed challenging behaviors to self-stimulation and child aggression. Strategies to prevent behaviors also differed. Mothers focused on preparation prior to hospitalization and attempts to partner with HCPs. HCPs identified fewer strategies and consulted mothers for strategies to manage challenging behaviors. Discussion HCP and parent collaboration could lead to strategies to increase supports for children with autism spectrum disorder in the hospital to decrease their frustration and challenging behaviors
