    Giving Voice to Non-traditional Students “Walking” the Narative Mediation Path. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

    The growing phenomenon of disadvantaged and non-traditional students increases the risk of educational underachievement and drop-out in universities in Europe. Within the European funded project INSTALL (Innovative Solutions to Acquire Learning to Learn) researchers developed a qualitative methodology — Narrative Mediation Path (NMP) — consisting of a group training process targeted to disadvantaged students. NMP, based on the psychological concept of ‘mentalization’‚ also known as ‘reflexive competence’, combines into one methodology four discursive modules: Metaphoric, Iconographic, Written and Bodily. In this chapter, we present the findings from an evaluative study about how participating students experienced the NMP training process, how NMP is able to support non-traditional students and the implications for policy makers. The results suggest that the use of different discursive modules supports the students in developing their reflexive competence during a formative experience which enables them to better adjust to the university context. Several propositions are made as to how NMP methodology can be integrated in various institutional contexts, and some key issues about policies and practice in supporting non-traditional students are made available for policy makers

    Impact of safety-related dose reductions or discontinuations on sustained virologic response in HCV-infected patients: Results from the GUARD-C Cohort

    BACKGROUND: Despite the introduction of direct-acting antiviral agents for chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, peginterferon alfa/ribavirin remains relevant in many resource-constrained settings. The non-randomized GUARD-C cohort investigated baseline predictors of safety-related dose reductions or discontinuations (sr-RD) and their impact on sustained virologic response (SVR) in patients receiving peginterferon alfa/ribavirin in routine practice. METHODS: A total of 3181 HCV-mono-infected treatment-naive patients were assigned to 24 or 48 weeks of peginterferon alfa/ribavirin by their physician. Patients were categorized by time-to-first sr-RD (Week 4/12). Detailed analyses of the impact of sr-RD on SVR24 (HCV RNA <50 IU/mL) were conducted in 951 Caucasian, noncirrhotic genotype (G)1 patients assigned to peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin for 48 weeks. The probability of SVR24 was identified by a baseline scoring system (range: 0-9 points) on which scores of 5 to 9 and <5 represent high and low probability of SVR24, respectively. RESULTS: SVR24 rates were 46.1% (754/1634), 77.1% (279/362), 68.0% (514/756), and 51.3% (203/396), respectively, in G1, 2, 3, and 4 patients. Overall, 16.9% and 21.8% patients experienced 651 sr-RD for peginterferon alfa and ribavirin, respectively. Among Caucasian noncirrhotic G1 patients: female sex, lower body mass index, pre-existing cardiovascular/pulmonary disease, and low hematological indices were prognostic factors of sr-RD; SVR24 was lower in patients with 651 vs. no sr-RD by Week 4 (37.9% vs. 54.4%; P = 0.0046) and Week 12 (41.7% vs. 55.3%; P = 0.0016); sr-RD by Week 4/12 significantly reduced SVR24 in patients with scores <5 but not 655. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, sr-RD to peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin significantly impacts on SVR24 rates in treatment-naive G1 noncirrhotic Caucasian patients. Baseline characteristics can help select patients with a high probability of SVR24 and a low probability of sr-RD with peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin

    An above-barrier narrow resonance in F-15

    Intense and purified radioactive beam of post-accelerated O-14 was used to study the low-lying states in the unbound F-15 nucleus. Exploiting resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with a thick target, the second excited state, a resonance at E-R = 4.757(6)(10) MeV with a width of Gamma = 36(5)(14) keV was measured for the first time with high precision. The structure of this narrow above-barrier state in a nucleus located two neutrons beyond the proton drip line was investigated using the Gamow Shell Model in the coupled channel representation with a C-12 core and three valence protons. It is found that it is an almost pure wave function of two quasi-bound protons in the 2s(1/2) shell. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V

    Responses of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) seedlings from different geographical locations to low temperature stress

    Climate change has exacerbated difficulties for both the environment and humans in recent years, with major consequences on the resilience and ecological diversity of forests, including those of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.). Because cold stress is an important challenge to silver fir seedling growth, particularly in the early phases of development, the goal of this study was to find potential genetic resources with appropriate responses to the action of low temperatures. Thus, traits of interest were studied in the early stage of seedlings from seven different Romanian provenances. Soil electrical conductivity, root weight, and total seedling weight were found to be related to seedling growth and biomass elements. The results revealed substantial differences depending on geographical origin. Garda Seaca provenance had the highest seedlings tolerance. Exposure to varying low temperatures revealed minor variations between seedlings from the control and those treated to −20 °C, which might be explained by the current temperatures in Romania’s silver fir producing area. However, exposing to −40 °C all seedlings showed deterioration. Soil electroconductivity reduced as exposure temperature decreased, emphasizing the link between cold stress and soil effects on fir seedling growth. Some Romanian provenances could be useful for future silver fir breeding or afforestation and reforestation operations

    Trees, seeds and seedlings analyses in the process of obtaining a quality planting material for black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.)

    Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) was among the first North-American tree species imported in Europe. In Romania, black locust has established itself as a forest tree appreciated for multiple uses. The objective of the hereby study was to identify a quality planting material at black locust using seeds from trees with superior traits from five stands geographically close, located in North-western of Romania. An empirical selection was done, thus trees with the most favourable traits were selected as plus trees. Among the averages of the main traits (tree height, diameter at breast height, basal area, self pruning trunk length, crown diameter) of the plus trees from the five stands, there were registered significant differences, and two stands stood out with a high biomass growth. Even if the stands had different ages (between 20-35 year), the age did not influence significantly the growth traits of the trees. The seeds of the plus trees (open-pollinated) from all the stands had large size (mean seed weight of 0.057 g/seed). The seedling emergence rate was high, especially in the solarium condition (between 52.7-73.7% compared with 33.0-41.3% in the field). Coefficient of genetic correlation and heritability calculated for the seedlings belongings to half-sib families highlighted that black locust breeding can be extremely effective by a proper selection

    Antibiotic Resistance Patterns of Uropathogens Causing Urinary Tract Infections in Children with Congenital Anomalies of Kidney and Urinary Tract

    Background: Urinary tract infections (UTI) are common in children worldwide. Congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) increase the risk of UTI and consequently antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic resistance represents an important public health issue worldwide. We aimed to evaluate the local trend in terms of bacterial uropathogen resistance in the western part of Romania in children with CAKUT and UTI. Methods: 252 children with CAKUT were admitted to our hospital over a five-year period. Of them, 91 developed at least one UTI episode, with a total number of 260 positive urine cultures. We collected data about age at diagnosis of CAKUT, sex, origin environment, type and side of CAKUT, number of UTIs, type of uropathogen, and uropathogens antibiotic resistance. Results: Distribution of uropathogens was Escherichia coli (38.84%), Klebsiella spp. (21.15%), Enterococcus spp. (15.76%), Proteus spp. (8.07%), Pseudomonas spp. (8.07%), Enterobacter spp. (2.3%), other Gram-negative bacteria (2.3%), and other Gram-positive bacteria (3.45%). High antibiotic resistance was detected for ampicillin, amoxicillin, and second-generation cephalosporins. Escherichia coli presented high resistance for cefepime and ceftriaxone. Pseudomonas spp. remained susceptible to amikacin, quinolones, and colistin. Vancomycin, teicoplanin, linezolid, and piperacillin/tazobactam remained effective in treating Gram-positive UTI. Conclusions: High antibiotic resistance was identified for frequently used antibiotics. Lower antibiotic resistance was observed for some broad-spectrum antibiotics. Understanding uropathogens’ antibiotic resistance is important in creating treatment recommendations, based on international guidelines, local resistance patterns, and patient particularities
