Open world reasoning in semantics-aware access control: A preliminary study

    Get PDF
We address the relationships between theoretical foundations of Description Logics and practical applications of security-oriented Semantic Web techniques. We first describe the advantages of semantics-aware Access Control and review the state of the art; we also introduce the basics of Description Logics and the novel semantics they share. Then we translate the principle underlying the Little House Problem of DL into a real-world use case: by applying Open World Reasoning to the Knowledge Base modelling a Virtual Organization, we derive information not achievable with traditional Access Control methodologies. With this example, we also show that a general problem such as ontology mapping can take advantage of the enhanced semantics underlying OWL Lite and OWL DL to handle under-specified concepts

Satellite-derived UV climatology at Escudero station, Antarctic Peninsula

We have used data from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) aboard NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) Aura satellite over the period 2004-11 to describe the characteristics of surface ultraviolet (UV) irradiance at Escudero Station (62°12′S, 58°57′W). The station is located on King George Island (northern Antarctic Peninsula). Temperatures in summer are frequently above 0°C, and the surrounding ocean is typically ice-free. We found that the UV irradiance at Escudero is driven by the Antarctic ozone hole (which annually in spring leads to significant variations in the ozone) and by clouds (which are more frequent and have a larger optical depth compared with other Antarctic sites). The combined effect of ozone and clouds led to significant variations in the surface UV. The variability (taken as the standard deviation of the UV estimates retrieved from OMI) is typically greater than 30% at Escudero, but may reach values greater than 50% in spring. The consistency of OMI-derived data was checked by using ground-based spectral measurements carried out under controlled conditions in January 2011. © 2013 Antarctic Science Ltd

The world's highest levels of surface UV

Chile's northern Atacama Desert has been pointed out as one of the places on earth where the world's highest surface ultraviolet (UV) may occur. This area is characterized by its high altitude, prevalent cloudless conditions and relatively low total ozone column. Aimed at detecting those peak UV levels, we carried out in January 2013 ground-based spectral measurements on the Chajnantor Plateau (5100 m altitude, 23°00′S, 67°45′W) and at the Paranal Observatory (2635 m altitude, 24°37′S, 70°24′W). The UV index computed from our spectral measurements peaked at 20 on the Chajnantor Plateau (under broken cloud conditions) and at 16 at the Paranal Observatory (under cloudless conditions). Spectral measurements carried out in June 2005 at the Izaña Observatory (2367 m altitude, 28°18′N, 16°30′W) were used for further comparisons. Due to the differences in sun-earth separation, total ozone column, altitude, albedo, aerosols and clouds, peak UV levels are expected to be significantly higher at southern hemisphere sites than at their northern hemisphere counterparts. © 2014 The Royal Society of Chemistry and Owner Societies

Abstract Background It is controversial whether or not the carpometacarpal joint (CMCJ) should be included in total wrist arthrodesis (TWA). Complications commonly occur at this site and studies examining its inclusion and exclusion are conflicting. A randomised clinical trial comparing wrist arthrodesis with CMCJ arthrodesis and spanning plate to wrist arthrodesis with CMCJ preservation and non-CMCJ spanning plate has not been performed. Method A single centre randomised clinical trial including 120 adults with end-stage isolated wrist arthritis will be performed to compare TWA with and without the CMCJ included in the arthrodesis. The primary outcome is complications in the first post-operative year. Secondary outcomes are Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score, Patient Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) and grip strength measured at 1, 2 and 5 years. Late complications, return to work and satisfaction will also be recorded. Discussion It is unknown whether the CMCJ should be included in TWA. This trial will contribute to an improved understanding of optimal management of the CMCJ in total wrist arthrodesis. Trial registration This trial was prospectively registered with the Australia New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry with identifying number ACTRN12621000169842 on the 16th February 2021. International audienceYttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ, ZrO2:Y2O3) thin films were deposited by reactive DC magnetron sputtering with a high deposition rate from a metallic target of Zr/Y in an argon/oxygen atmosphere. Plasma parameters and composition analysis of the gas phase reveal that the sputtering process in the "compound" mode is reached for a 2.5 sccm oxygen flow rate. Deposition onto silicon in "metal" mode at a flow rate close to the transition, allows obtaining at very high deposition rates (> 10 µm.h-1) a compact columnar stoichiometric crystallized YSZ film. When deposited on NiO YSZ commercial anode, the obtained coatings show the same properties. In spite of the complexity of the substrate (roughness and porosity), a compact and conformed layer was formed. Annealing treatments in air or hydrogen do not significantly alter the structure of the layers. Electrochemical test at 850°C with a screen-printed LSM (LaSrMnO3) cathode exhibits a satisfying gastightness (OCV=900 mV) and a maximum power density of 350 mW.cm-2

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide. Various factors, including oxidative stress, where excessive productions of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) occur, contribute to its pathogenesis. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of antioxidant substances derived from food such fruits and vegetables; however, data on Lycopene are still rare. Stidies on HT-29 colorectal cancer cells and on animal models have shown that Lycopene has effects on cell proliferation and on the progression of the CRC by interacting with variuos cellular signaling pathways. this analysis of the literature focused on the antioxidant effect of Lycopene, a substance that is found in the tomato

INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE AND EXTRAINTESTINAL MANIFESTATIONS

    Get PDF
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, are chronic and recurrent inflammatory diseases. Although the typical symptoms are localized in the gastrointestinal tract, there are also extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs) associated with IBD, probably caused by immune reactions secondary to the pathology of origin. Anybody can be affected by EIMs, which can be dermatological, pulmonary, ocular, musculoskeletal, hepatobiliary and neurological, et al. This represents a therapeutic challenge for clinicians, who must first establish a diagnostic and then a multidisciplinary therapeutic path, in order to guarantee an optimal quality of life for the patient
