Formulation of consumables management models. Volume 2: Mission planning processor user guide
A user guide for the MPP (Mission Planning Processor) is presented. The MPP is used in the evaluation of particular missions, with appropriate display and storage of related consumables data. Design goals are accomplished by the use of an on-line/demand mode computer terminal Cathode Ray Tube Display. The process is such that the user merely adds specific mission/flight functions to a skeleton flight and/or alters the skeleton. The skeleton flight includes operational aspects from prelaunch through ground support equipment connect after rollout as required to place the STS (Space Transportation System) in a parking orbit, maintain the spacecraft and crew for the stated on-orbit period and return
A Brodie's abscess with soft tissue collection-complicating an already difficult diagnosis
A healthy 14-year-old boy with a 3-month history of thigh pain and swelling is referred to a specialist centre with an uncertain diagnosis. After extensive tests and imaging a Brodie’s abscess is diagnosed. The abscess is complicated by a fistula (cloaca) through the cortical bone of the femur, resulting in a large complex soft tissue collection. This is a presentation, we are unaware has been documented in any literature. After specialist multi-team combined management (Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic and Paediatric Infectious Diseases), the patient undergoes two surgical procedures, and extensive antibiotic cover. The patient makes a good recovery with no long lasting sequelae to date
Effects of a multi-component exercise program and calcium–vitamin-D3-fortified milk on bone mineral density in older men : a randomised controlled trial
Summary We examined the independent and combined effects of a multi-component exercise program and calcium–vitamin-D3-fortified milk on bone mineral density (BMD) in older men. Exercise resulted in a 1.8% net gain in femoral neck BMD, but additional calcium–vitamin D3 did not enhance the response in this group of older well-nourished men.Introduction This 12-month randomised controlled trial assessed whether calcium–vitamin-D3-fortified milk could enhance the effects of a multi-component exercise program on BMD in older men. Methods Men (n  = 180) aged 50–79 years were randomised into: (1) exercise + fortified milk; (2) exercise; (3) fortified milk; or (4) controls. Exercise consisted of high intensity progressive resistance training with weight-bearing impact exercise. Men assigned to fortified milk consumed 400 mL/day of low fat milk providing an additional 1,000 mg/day calcium and 800 IU/day vitamin D3. Femoral neck (FN), total hip, lumbar spine and trochanter BMD and body composition (DXA), muscle strength 25-hydroxyvitamin D and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were assessed. Results There were no exercise-by-fortified milk interactions at any skeletal site. Exercise resulted in a 1.8% net gain in FN BMD relative to no-exercise (p < 0.001); lean mass (0.6 kg, p < 0.05) and muscle strength (20–52%, p < 0.001) also increased in response to exercise. For lumbar spine BMD, there was a net 1.4–1.5% increase in all treatment groups relative to controls (all p < 0.01). There were no main effects of fortified milk at any skeletal site. Conclusion A multi-component community-based exercise program was effective for increasing FN BMD in older men, but additional calcium–vitamin D3 did not enhance the osteogenic response.<br /
Formulation of advanced consumables management models: Environmental control and electrical power system performance models requirements
Software design specifications for developing environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) and electrical power system (EPS) programs into interactive computer programs are presented. Specifications for the ECLSS program are at the detail design level with respect to modification of an existing batch mode program. The FORTRAN environmental analysis routines (FEAR) are the subject batch mode program. The characteristics of the FEAR program are included for use in modifying batch mode programs to form interactive programs. The EPS program specifications are at the preliminary design level. Emphasis is on top-down structuring in the development of an interactive program
Formulation of advanced consumables management models: Executive summary
An overview of studies conducted to establish the requirements for advanced subsystem analytical tools is presented. Modifications are defined for updating current computer programs used to analyze environmental control, life support, and electric power supply systems so that consumables for future advanced spacecraft may be managed

Variant translocation with a deletion of derivative (9q) in a case of Philadelphia chromosome positive (Ph +) essential thrombocythemia (ET), a variant of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) with a poor prognosis
Patients presenting with thrombocytosis require thorough clinical and laboratory evaluation to determine whether they suffer from essential thrombocythemia or another myeloproliferative disorder. This distinction becomes increasingly relevant as targeted agents become available to treat specific myeloproliferative diseases. Cytogenetic testing plays a major role in this analysis. This study presents a patient with Philadelphia chromosome positive (Ph+) thrombocytosis and a cryptic der(9q)t(5;9)t(9;22) not found by conventional cytogenetics, whose disease progressed within 2 years to typical myeloblastic crisis of CML. It discusses the entity of Ph + ET, the utility of molecular cytogenetic testing in the diagnosis of this unusual disease entity and the importance of cytogenetic testing in the prognosis of ET

Constraining Dark Energy and Cosmological Transition Redshift with Type Ia Supernovae
The property of dark energy and the physical reason for acceleration of the
present universe are two of the most difficult problems in modern cosmology.
The dark energy contributes about two-thirds of the critical density of the
present universe from the observations of type-Ia supernova (SNe Ia) and
anisotropy of cosmic microwave background (CMB).The SN Ia observations also
suggest that the universe expanded from a deceleration to an acceleration phase
at some redshift, implying the existence of a nearly uniform component of dark
energy with negative pressure. We use the ``gold'' sample containing 157 SNe Ia
and two recent well-measured additions, SNe Ia 1994ae and 1998aq to explore the
properties of dark energy and the transition redshift. For a flat universe with
the cosmological constant, we measure , which
is consistent with Riess et al. The transition redshift is
. We also discuss several dark energy models that
define the of the parameterized equation of state of dark energy
including one parameter and two parameters ( being the ratio of the
pressure to energy density). Our calculations show that the accurately
calculated transition redshift varies from to
across these models. We also calculate the minimum
redshift at which the current observations need the universe to
accelerate.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl
Phosphorus Transfer to River Water from Grassland Catchments in Ireland
In Ireland it is estimated that at least half of phosphorus (P) loss to water is from agricultural sources and National and European Union policy and legislation aim at reducing phosphorus (P) loss to water in order to reduce eutrophication. In Ireland, the average soil test P (STP) levels increased ten-fold, from less than 1 to over 8 mg Morgan P per l soil over the past 50 years, reflecting increased P inputs in fertiliser and animal feed. One of the main objectives of this three-year research programme, started in 2001, was to investigate P loss to water in grassland catchments
