Survey of parasite control practices in sheep and cattle

    Get PDF
Farms in the Albany, Esperance, Jerramungup and Katanning districts were surveyed to determine parasite control strategies currently used, to evaluate the adoption of recommended control practices and to detect areas of ineffective parasite control. For cattle, the number of drenches given in the low rainfall zone was higher than the number given in the high rainfall zone

Path integrals, particular kinds, and strange things

This paper describes a path integral formulation of the free energy principle. The ensuing account expresses the paths or trajectories that a particle takes as it evolves over time. The main results are a method or principle of least action that can be used to emulate the behaviour of particles in open exchange with their external milieu. Particles are defined by a particular partition, in which internal states are individuated from external states by active and sensory blanket states. The variational principle at hand allows one to interpret internal dynamics - of certain kinds of particles - as inferring external states that are hidden behind blanket states. We consider different kinds of particles, and to what extent they can be imbued with an elementary form of inference or sentience. Specifically, we consider the distinction between dissipative and conservative particles, inert and active particles and, finally, ordinary and strange particles. Strange particles (look as if they) infer their own actions, endowing them with apparent autonomy or agency. In short - of the kinds of particles afforded by a particular partition - strange kinds may be apt for describing sentient behaviour.Comment: 31 pages (excluding references), 6 figure

Use of Sperm In Vitro Capacitation and Flow Cytometry to Estimate Bull Fertility

Study Description: Frozen-thawed semen from five bulls previously identified as high (48.1% and 47.7%, bulls A and B, respectively), intermediary (45.5%, bull C) or low (43.1% and 40.7%, bulls D and E, respectively) fertility, based on pregnancy per AI, were evaluated with several laboratory measures. Measures included total motility, sperm plasma membrane integrity (viability), acrosome integrity, reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane energy potential (mito-potential), zinc signatures (signatures 1 to 4), and CD9 protein populations at pre-wash, post-wash, h 0 (diluted with non-capacitation media), and at 0, 3, 6, and 24 h after dilution with capacitation media and incubation at 37 ºC. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS for repeated measures with bull, time, and the interaction as fixed effects. Bull by time interaction was significant (P ≤ 0.01) for total motility and viability. There tended (P = 0.06) to be a bull by time interaction for zinc signatures 1 + 2 combined. There was a significant effect of bull (P ≤ 0.03) for viability, viable sperm with disrupted acrosome, zinc signatures 1, 2, and 1 + 2, viable CD9- (CD9 negative), and dead CD9+ (CD9 positive). High and intermediary field fertility bulls had greater (P ≤ 0.04) percentages of viable sperm, zinc signature 2, and zinc signature 1 + 2 compared to low fertility bulls. High and intermediary fertility bulls had decreased (P ≤ 0.05) percentage of dead CD9+ compared to low fertility bulls. There was or tended to be a positive correlation between pregnancy per AI and viability (P = 0.10; r = 0.81), zinc signature 2 (P = 0.04; r = 0.89), and zinc signature 1 + 2 (P = 0.10; r = 0.80)

Air fluorescence measurements in the spectral range 300-420 nm using a 28.5 GeV electron beam

Measurements are reported of the yield and spectrum of fluorescence, excited by a 28.5 GeV electron beam, in air at a range of pressures of interest to ultra-high energy cosmic ray detectors. The wavelength range was 300 - 420 nm. System calibration has been performed using Rayleigh scattering of a nitrogen laser beam. In atmospheric pressure dry air at 304 K the yield is 20.8 +/- 1.6 photons per MeV.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures. Submitted to Astroparticle Physic

Intra-Campaign Changes in Voting Preferences: The Impact of Media and Party Communication

    Get PDF
An increasing number of citizens change and adapt their party preferences during the electoral campaign. We analyze which short-term factors explain intra-campaign changes in voting preferences, focusing on the visibility and tone of news media reporting and party canvassing. Our analyses rely on an integrative data approach, linking data from media content analysis to public opinion data. This enables us to investigate the relative impact of news media reporting as well as party communication. Inherently, we overcome previously identified methodological problems in the study of communication effects on voting behavior. Our findings reveal that campaigns matter: Especially interpersonal party canvassing increases voters’ likelihood to change their voting preferences in favor of the respective party, whereas media effects are limited to quality news outlets and depend on individual voters’ party ambivalence

The Apparent and Intrinsic Shape of the APM Galaxy Clusters

We estimate the distribution of intrinsic shapes of APM galaxy clusters from the distribution of their apparent shapes. We measure the projected cluster ellipticities using two alternative methods. The first method is based on moments of the discrete galaxy distribution while the second is based on moments of the smoothed galaxy distribution. We study the performance of both methods using Monte Carlo cluster simulations covering the range of APM cluster distances and including a random distribution of background galaxies. We find that the first method suffers from severe systematic biases, whereas the second is more reliable. After excluding clusters dominated by substructure and quantifying the systematic biases in our estimated shape parameters, we recover a corrected distribution of projected ellipticities. We use the non-parametric kernel method to estimate the smooth apparent ellipticity distribution, and numerically invert a set of integral equations to recover the corresponding distribution of intrinsic ellipticities under the assumption that the clusters are either oblate or prolate spheroids. The prolate spheroidal model fits the APM cluster data best.Comment: 8 pages, including 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
