    A Spanish Language Milker\u27s School for Idaho Dairy Employees

    Educational opportunities for Hispanic employees are consistently one of the top Idaho dairy industry-identified needs. Consequently, University of Idaho Extension Faculty developed a Spanish language Milker\u27s School. The Milker\u27s School provides Spanish-speaking dairy employees with an opportunity to improve their knowledge and understanding of the entire milking process, including the importance of their role in the process. The Milker\u27s School provides an educational opportunity for a traditionally underserved group, and narrows the language and culture gap that exists between English speaking dairy owners and Spanish speaking employees

    Promoting a Consistent Food Safety and Quality Message to the Dairy Industry: An Updated Resource for Extension Faculty, Veterinarians, and Dairy Advisors

    A team from seven western states developed educational resources providing a consistent meat safety and quality message to dairy producers, farm advisors, and veterinarians. The team produced a Web site and CD-ROM, DairyBeef: Maximizing Quality & Profits, consisting of videos, narrated slide sets, and on-farm tools. An additional project translated much of the curriculum into language appropriate for farm labor in both English and Spanish. DairyBeef: Maximizing Quality & Profits will help Extension faculty, veterinarians, and dairy advisors assist dairy producers and their employees in understanding market cattle food safety and quality issues and management practices to address them

    Use of Sperm In Vitro Capacitation and Flow Cytometry to Estimate Bull Fertility

    Study Description: Frozen-thawed semen from five bulls previously identified as high (48.1% and 47.7%, bulls A and B, respectively), intermediary (45.5%, bull C) or low (43.1% and 40.7%, bulls D and E, respectively) fertility, based on pregnancy per AI, were evaluated with several laboratory measures. Measures included total motility, sperm plasma membrane integrity (viability), acrosome integrity, reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial membrane energy potential (mito-potential), zinc signatures (signatures 1 to 4), and CD9 protein populations at pre-wash, post-wash, h 0 (diluted with non-capacitation media), and at 0, 3, 6, and 24 h after dilution with capacitation media and incubation at 37 ºC. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS for repeated measures with bull, time, and the interaction as fixed effects. Bull by time interaction was significant (P ≤ 0.01) for total motility and viability. There tended (P = 0.06) to be a bull by time interaction for zinc signatures 1 + 2 combined. There was a significant effect of bull (P ≤ 0.03) for viability, viable sperm with disrupted acrosome, zinc signatures 1, 2, and 1 + 2, viable CD9- (CD9 negative), and dead CD9+ (CD9 positive). High and intermediary field fertility bulls had greater (P ≤ 0.04) percentages of viable sperm, zinc signature 2, and zinc signature 1 + 2 compared to low fertility bulls. High and intermediary fertility bulls had decreased (P ≤ 0.05) percentage of dead CD9+ compared to low fertility bulls. There was or tended to be a positive correlation between pregnancy per AI and viability (P = 0.10; r = 0.81), zinc signature 2 (P = 0.04; r = 0.89), and zinc signature 1 + 2 (P = 0.10; r = 0.80)

    Lensing-Induced Structure of Submillimeter Sources: Implications for the Microwave Background

    We consider the effect of lensing by galaxy clusters on the angular distribution of submillimeter wavelength objects. While lensing does not change the total flux and number counts of submillimeter sources, it can affect the number counts and fluxes of flux-limited samples. Therefore imposing a flux cut on point sources not only reduces the overall Poisson noise, but imprints the correlations between lensing clusters on the unresolved flux distribution. Using a simple model, we quantify the lensing anisotropy induced in flux-limited samples and compare this to Poisson noise. We find that while the level of induced anisotropies on the scale of the cluster angular correlation length is comparable to Poisson noise for a slowly evolving cluster model, it is negligible for more realistic models of cluster evolution. Thus the removal of point sources is not expected to induce measurable structure in the microwave or far-infrared backgrounds.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, accepted to Astrophysical Journa

    Shorter spontaneous fixation durations in infants with later emerging autism

    Little is known about how spontaneous attentional deployment differs on a millisecond-level scale in the early development of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We measured fine-grained eye movement patterns in 6-to 9-month-old infants at high or low familial risk (HR/LR) of ASD while they viewed static images. We observed shorter fixation durations (i.e. the time interval between saccades) in HR than LR infants. Preliminary analyses indicate that these results were replicated in a second cohort of infants. Fixation durations were shortest in those infants who went on to receive an ASD diagnosis at 36 months. While these findings demonstrate early-developing atypicality in fine-grained measures of attentional deployment early in the etiology of ASD, the specificity of these effects to ASD remains to be determined

    Combining Clinical, Pathological, and Demographic Factors Refines Prognosis of Lung Cancer: A Population-Based Study

    In the treatment of lung cancer, an accurate estimation of patient clinical outcome is essential for choosing an appropriate course of therapy. It is important to develop a prognostic stratification model which combines clinical, pathological and demographic factors for individualized clinical decision making.A total of 234,412 patients diagnosed with adenocarcinomas or squamous cell carcinomas of the lung or bronchus between 1988 and 2006 were retrieved from the SEER database to construct a prognostic model. A model was developed by estimating a Cox proportional hazards model on 500 bootstrapped samples. Two models, one using stage alone and another comprehensive model using additional covariates, were constructed. The comprehensive model consistently outperformed the model using stage alone in prognostic stratification and on Harrell's C, Nagelkerke's R(2), and Brier Scores in the whole patient population as well as in specific treatment modalities. Specifically, the comprehensive model generated different prognostic groups with distinct post-operative survival (log-rank P<0.001) within surgical stage IA and IB patients in Kaplan-Meier analyses. Two additional patient cohorts (n = 1,991) were used as an external validation, with the comprehensive model again outperforming the model using stage alone with regards to prognostic stratification and the three evaluated metrics.These results demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a precise prognostic model combining multiple clinical, pathologic, and demographic factors. The comprehensive model significantly improves individualized prognosis upon AJCC tumor staging and is robust across a range of treatment modalities, the spectrum of patient risk, and in novel patient cohorts
