    On the abundances of GRO J1655-40

    Context: The detection of overabundances of α\alpha-elements and lithium in the secondary star of a black-hole binary provides important insights about the formation of a stellar-mass black-hole. α\alpha-enhancement might theoretically also be the result of pollution by the nucleosynthesis occurring during an outburst, or through spallation by the jet. Aims: We study the abundances, and their possible variations with time, in the secondary star of the runaway black-hole binary GRO J1655--40, in order to understand their origin. Methods: We present a detailed comparison between a Keck spectrum obtained in 1998 found in the literature, archival VLT-UVES data taken in 2004 and new VLT-UVES spectra obtained early 2006. We carefully determine the equivalent widths of different α\alpha-elements (Mg, O, Ti, S and Si) with their associated uncertainty. We use the well-studied comparison star HD 156098 as well as synthetic spectra to match the spectrum of GRO J1655--40 in order to determine the abundances of these elements. Results: We see no significant variations of equivalent widths with time. Our fit using HD 156098 reveals that there is significant overabundance of oxygen in all our spectra, but no overabundances of any of the other α\alpha-elements. Finally, we do not detect the lithium line at 6707 \AA. Conclusions: We show that there is no detected pollution in GRO J1655--40 after the burst in 2005. Moreover, we argue that uncertainties in the equivalent widths were previously underestimated by a factor of ∌\sim3. Consequently, our results challenge the existence of general overabundances of α\alpha-elements observed in this galactic black-hole binary, and thus the accepted interpretation that they are of supernova origin.     Position-based simulation of deformations for autonomous robotic ultrasound scanning

    Realistic and fast simulation of anatomical deformations due to ultrasound probe pressure is of outstanding importance for testing and validation of autonomous robotic ultrasound systems. We propose a deformation model which relies on the position-based dynamics (PBD) approach to simulate the probetissue interaction and predict the displacement of internal targets during US acquisition. Performances of the patient-specific PBD anatomical model are evaluated in comparison to two different simulations relying on the traditional finite element (FE) method, in the context of breast ultrasound scanning. Localization error obtained when applying the PBD model remains below 11 mm for all the tumors even for input displacements in the order of 30 mm. The proposed method is able to achieve a better trade-off among accuracy, computation time and generalization capabilities with respect to the two FE models. Position-based dynamics approach has proved to be successful in modeling breast tissue deformations during US acquisition. It represents a valid alternative to classical FE methods for simulating the interaction between US probe and tissues

    Intermittency of glassy relaxation and the emergence of a non-equilibrium spontaneous measure in the aging regime

    We consider heat exchange processes between non-equilibrium aging systems (in their activated regime) and the thermal bath in contact. We discuss a scenario where two different heat exchange processes concur in the overall heat dissipation: a stimulated fast process determined by the temperature of the bath and a spontaneous intermittent process determined by the fact that the system has been prepared in a non-equilibrium state. The latter is described by a probability distribution function (PDF) that has an exponential tail of width given by a parameter λ\lambda, and satisfies a fluctuation theorem (FT) governed by that parameter. The value of λ\lambda is proportional to the so-called effective temperature, thereby providing a practical way to experimentally measure it by analyzing the PDF of intermittent events.Comment: Latex file, 8 pages + 5 postscript figure

    Discourse markers activate their, <i>like</i>, cohort competitors

    Speech in everyday conversations is riddled with discourse markers (DMs), such as well, you know, and like. However, in many lab-based studies of speech comprehension, such DMs are typically absent from the carefully articulated and highly controlled speech stimuli. As such, little is known about how these DMs influence online word recognition. The present study specifically investigated the online processing of DM like and how it influences the activation of words in the mental lexicon. We specifically targeted the cohort competitor (CC) effect in the Visual World Paradigm: Upon hearing spoken instructions to “pick up the beaker,” human listeners also typically fixate—next to the target object—referents that overlap phonologically with the target word (cohort competitors such as beetle; CCs). However, several studies have argued that CC effects are constrained by syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, and discourse constraints. Therefore, the present study investigated whether DM like influences online word recognition by activating its cohort competitors (e.g., lightbulb). In an eye-tracking experiment using the Visual World Paradigm, we demonstrate that when participants heard spoken instructions such as “Now press the button for the, like 
 unicycle,” they showed anticipatory looks to the CC referent (lightbulb)well before hearing the target. This CC effect was sustained for a relatively long period of time, even despite hearing disambiguating information (i.e., the /k/ in like). Analysis of the reaction times also showed that participants were significantly faster to select CC targets (lightbulb) when preceded by DM like. These findings suggest that seemingly trivial DMs, such as like, activate their CCs, impacting online word recognition. Thus, we advocate a more holistic perspective on spoken language comprehension in naturalistic communication, including the processing of DMs

    Molecular and morphometric variation within and between population samples of the articulate brachiopod &lt;i&gt;Terebratulina&lt;/i&gt; spp., collected in 1985-1987 from a Norwegian fjord, sea lochs and costal sites in western Scotland, the southern English Channel (Brittany) and the western Mediterranean, were measured by the analysis of variation in the lengths of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) fragments produced by digestion with nine restriction endonucleases and by multivariate statistical analysis of six selected morphometric parameters. Nucleotide difference within each population sample was high. Nucleotide difference between population samples from the Scottish sites, both those that are tidally contiguous and those that appear to be geographically isolated, were not significantly different from zero. Nucleotide differences between the populations samples from Norway, Brittany, Scotland and the western Mediterranean were also very low. Morphometric analysis confirmed the absence of substantial differentiation

    We have magneto-optically trapped all three stable neon isotopes, including the rare Ne-21, and all two-isotope combinations. The atoms are prepared in the metastable ^3P_2 state and manipulated via laser interaction on the ^3P_2 to ^3D_3} transition at 640.2nm. These cold (T = 1mK) and environmentally decoupled atom samples present ideal objects for precision measurements and the investigation of interactions between cold and ultracold metastable atoms. In this work, we present accurate measurements of the isotope shift of the ^3P_2 to ^3D_3 transition and the hyperfine interaction constants of the ^3D_3 state of Ne-21. The determined isotope shifts are (1625.9\pm0.15)MHz for Ne-20 to Ne-22, (855.7\pm1.0)MHz for Ne-20 to Ne-21, and (770.3\pm1.0)MHz for Ne-21 to Ne-22. The obtained magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hyperfine interaction constants are A(^3D_3)= (-142.4\pm0.2)MHz and B(^3D_3)=(-107.7\pm1.1)MHz, respectively. All measurements give a reduction of uncertainty by about one order of magnitude over previous measurements
