    Particulate Matter Exposure Impairs Systemic Microvascular Endothelium-Dependent Dilation

    Acute exposure to airborne pollutants, such as solid particulate matter (PM), increases the risk of cardiovascular dysfunction, but the mechanisms by which PM evokes systemic effects remain to be identified. The purpose of this study was to determine if pulmonary exposure to a PM surrogate, such as residual oil fly ash (ROFA), affects endothelium-dependent dilation in the systemic microcirculation. Rats were intratracheally instilled with ROFA at 0.1, 0.25, 1 or 2 mg/rat 24 hr before experimental measurements. Rats intratracheally instilled with saline or titanium dioxide (0.25 mg/rat) served as vehicle or particle control groups, respectively. In vivo microscopy of the spinotrapezius muscle was used to study systemic arteriolar dilator responses to the Ca(2+) ionophore A23187, administered by ejection via pressurized micropipette into the arteriolar lumen. We used analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) samples to monitor identified pulmonary inflammation and damage. To determine if ROFA exposure affected arteriolar nitric oxide sensitivity, sodium nitroprusside was iontophoretically applied to arterioles of rats exposed to ROFA. In saline-treated rats, A23187 dilated arterioles up to 72 ± 7% of maximum. In ROFA- and TiO(2)-exposed rats, A23187-induced dilation was significantly attenuated. BAL fluid analysis revealed measurable pulmonary inflammation and damage after exposure to 1 and 2 mg ROFA (but not TiO(2) or < 1 mg ROFA), as evidenced by significantly higher polymorphonuclear leukocyte cell counts, enhanced BAL albumin levels, and increased lactate dehydrogenase activity in BAL fluid. The sensitivity of arteriolar smooth muscle to NO was similar in saline-treated and ROFA-exposed rats, suggesting that pulmonary exposure to ROFA affected endothelial rather than smooth muscle function. A significant increase in venular leukocyte adhesion and rolling was observed in ROFA-exposed rats, suggesting local inflammation at the systemic microvascular level. These results indicate that pulmonary PM exposure impairs systemic endothelium-dependent arteriolar dilation. Moreover, because rats exposed to < 1 mg ROFA or TiO(2) did not exhibit BAL signs of pulmonary damage or inflammation, it appears that PM exposure can impair systemic microvascular function independently of detectable pulmonary inflammation

    Volunteerism, Community Service, and Service-Learning by Ohio 4-Hers in Grades 4-12

    This study reported here investigated volunteer service by Ohio 4-H\u27ers ages 10 to 19. The study\u27s population was randomly sampled by each age category: 66,345 4-H community club members ages 10-14 and 18,233 ages 15-19. Study findings suggest that nearly 100% of 4-H\u27ers in both age categories are involved in community service. Respondents spent an equal amount of time volunteering through school, out of school, on their own, or through 4-H youth development experiences. The researchers conclude that 4-H youth development has an impact on 4-H\u27ers performing service but that it is not the only way members are helping others

    Effects of Ambient Particulate Matter on Aerobic Exercise Performance

    Background/Objective: Wintertime thermal inversions in narrow mountain valleys create a ceiling effect, increasing concentration of small particulate matter (PM2.5). Despite potential health risks, many people continue to exercise outdoors in thermal inversions. This study measured the effects of ambient PM2.5 exposure associated with a typical thermal inversion on exercise performance, pulmonary function, and biological markers of inflammation. Methods: Healthy, active adults (5 males, 11 females) performed two cycle ergometer time trials outdoors in a counterbalanced design: 1) low ambient PM2.5 concentrations (/m3 ), and 2) an air quality index (AQI) ranking of “yellow.” Variables of interest were exercise performance, exhaled nitric oxide (eNO), c-reactive protein (CRP), forced vital capacity (FVC), and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1). Results: Despite a significant difference in mean PM2.5 concentration of 9.3 ± 3.0 mg/m3 between trials (p \u3c .001), there was no significant difference (p = .424) in the distance covered during low PM2.5 conditions (9.9 ± 1.7 km) compared to high PM2.5 conditions (10.1 ± 1.5 km). There were no clinically significant differences across time or between trials for eNO, CRP, FVC, or FEV1. Additionally, there were no dose-response relationships (p \u3e .05) for PM2.5 concentration and the measured variables. Conclusion: An acute bout of vigorous exercise during an AQI of “yellow” did not diminish exercise performance in healthy adults, nor did it have a negative effect on pulmonary function or biological health markers.     Multiple Time Scales in Diffraction Measurements of Diffusive Surface Relaxation

    We grew SrTiO3 on SrTiO3 (001) by pulsed laser deposition, using x-ray scattering to monitor the growth in real time. The time-resolved small angle scattering exhibits a well-defined length scale associated with the spacing between unit cell high surface features. This length scale imposes a discrete spectrum of Fourier components and rate constants upon the diffusion equation solution, evident in multiple exponential relaxation of the "anti-Bragg" diffracted intensity. An Arrhenius analysis of measured rate constants confirms that they originate from a single activation energy.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Taxonomy of the Allium Tribracteatum (Alliaceae) Complex

    Allium tribracteatum and related species present a confusing array in California. Previous attempts at classification have been largely unsuccessful and keys that are available are unworkable. Herbarium and field studies were initiated to ascertain if previously overlooked characteristics could be found that would elucidate relationships within the group. Members of the complex were examined morphologically and cytologically. Based on these investigations four of the seven previously described taxa are considered valid: A. cratericola, A. obtusum, A. tribracteatum, and A. yosemitense. Allium tribracteatum is redefined and A. obtusum is divided into two varieties. Allium obtusum var. conspicuum var. n. is described. A key to the species is presented and relationships within the complex are discussed
