    We have reported a case of Yunis-Varon syndrome which is a rare, autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by growth retardation, defective growth of the cranial bones, characteristic facial features, abnormalities of the fingers and/or toes & cleidocranial dysplasia. Additional features in this case were patent ductus arteriosus, CT brain findings suggestive of ischemic changes, CSF examination suggestive of pyogenic meningitis & cystic changes in right adrenal gland

    Some properties of the solutions of obstacle problems with measure data

    We study some properties of the obstacle reactions associated with the solutions of unilateral obstacle problems with measure data. These results allow us to prove that, under very weak assumptions on the obstacles, the solutions do not depend on the components of the negative parts of the data which are concentrated on sets of capacity zero. The proof is based on a careful analysis of the behaviour of the potentials of two mutually singular measures near the points where both potentials tend to infinity.Comment: 18 page

    Boundary Asymptotic Analysis for an Incompressible Viscous Flow: Navier Wall Laws

    We consider a new way of establishing Navier wall laws. Considering a bounded domain Ω\Omega of R N , N=2,3, surrounded by a thin layer Σϵ\Sigma \epsilon, along a part Γ\Gamma2 of its boundary ∂Ω\partial \Omega, we consider a Navier-Stokes flow in Ω∪∂Ω∪Σϵ\Omega \cup \partial \Omega \cup \Sigma \epsilon with Reynolds' number of order 1/ϵ\epsilon in Σϵ\Sigma \epsilon. Using Γ\Gamma-convergence arguments, we describe the asymptotic behaviour of the solution of this problem and get a general Navier law involving a matrix of Borel measures having the same support contained in the interface Γ\Gamma2. We then consider two special cases where we characterize this matrix of measures. As a further application, we consider an optimal control problem within this context

    Effect of Hypertension on Outcomes of High-Risk Patients After BCG-Treated Bladder Cancer

    Immunotherapy with Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) is the most efficacious treatment for high-risk bladder cancer (BC) (Ta/T1 or carcinoma in situ) to reduce the risk of recurrence. Our aim was to evaluate whether hypertension and diabetes influence the outcome of patients with noninvasive BC treated with BCG instillations. In order to collect homogeneous data, we considered as "hypertensive" only those patients who had previous diagnosed hypertension and a history of taking medical therapy with antihypertensive drugs (AHT), and as "diabetic" only those prescribed oral antidiabetics or insulin (ADT). We analyzed 343 high-risk BC patients undergoing BCG 1995 2010) with a median follow-up of 116 months (range 48-238). The distribution of various kinds of AHT and antidiabetic drugs was homogeneous, with no significant differences (p > 0.05). In both univariate and multivariate analyses, the only statistically significant parameter propostic for recurrence after BCG treatment was AHT. Recurrence-liee survival curves showed a significant correlation with AHT (p = 0.0168, hazards ratio [HR] 1.45, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.0692-1.9619); there was no correlation ( p = 0.9040) with ADT (HR 0.9750, 95% CI 0.6457-1.4721). After stratification of AHT and A.DT according to drug(s) prescribed, there were no significant differences in the BC recurrence rate (p > 0.05). In this study with a very long-term follow-up, hypertension alone (evaluated by AHT) revealed the increased risk of BC recurrence after BCG treatment. Several hypotheses have been formulated to support these findings, but further prospective studies are needed to both evaluate the real influence of hypertension and identify a possible prognostic factor to be used in selecting poor-prognosis BC patients as early candidates for surgical treatment

    On paths-based criteria for polynomial time complexity in proof-nets

    Girard's Light linear logic (LLL) characterized polynomial time in the proof-as-program paradigm with a bound on cut elimination. This logic relied on a stratification principle and a "one-door" principle which were generalized later respectively in the systems L^4 and L^3a. Each system was brought with its own complex proof of Ptime soundness. In this paper we propose a broad sufficient criterion for Ptime soundness for linear logic subsystems, based on the study of paths inside the proof-nets, which factorizes proofs of soundness of existing systems and may be used for future systems. As an additional gain, our bound stands for any reduction strategy whereas most bounds in the literature only stand for a particular strategy.Comment: Long version of a conference pape

    Scaling laws of electromagnetic and piezoelectric seismic vibration energy harvesters built from discrete components

    This paper presents a theoretical study on the scaling laws of electromagnetic and piezoelectric seismic vibration energy harvesters, which are assembled from discrete components. The scaling laws are therefore derived for the so called meso-scale range, which is typical of devices built from distinct elements. Isotropic scaling is considered for both harvesters such that the shape of the components and of the whole transducers do not change with scaling. The scaling analyses are restricted to the case of linearly elastic seismic transducers subject to tonal ambient vibrations at their fundamental natural frequency, where the energy harvesting is particularly effective. Both resistive-reactive and resistive optimal electric harvesting loads are considered. The study is based on equivalent formulations for the response and power harvesting of the two transducers, which employ the so called electromagnetic and piezoelectric power transduction factors, \u3a0cm2 and \u3a0pe2. The scaling laws of the transduction coefficients and electrical and mechanical parameters for the two transducers are first provided. A comprehensive comparative scaling analysis is then presented for the harvested power, for the power harvesting efficiency and for the stroke of the two harvesters. Particular attention is dedicated to the scaling laws for the dissipative effects in the two harvesters, that is the Couette air losses and eddy currents losses that develop in the electromagnetic harvester and the material, air and dielectric losses that arise in the piezoelectric harvester. The scaling laws emerged from the study, are thoroughly examined and interpreted with respect to equivalent mechanical effects produced by the harvesting loads

    Spatial interactions in agent-based modeling

    Agent Based Modeling (ABM) has become a widespread approach to model complex interactions. In this chapter after briefly summarizing some features of ABM the different approaches in modeling spatial interactions are discussed. It is stressed that agents can interact either indirectly through a shared environment and/or directly with each other. In such an approach, higher-order variables such as commodity prices, population dynamics or even institutions, are not exogenously specified but instead are seen as the results of interactions. It is highlighted in the chapter that the understanding of patterns emerging from such spatial interaction between agents is a key problem as much as their description through analytical or simulation means. The chapter reviews different approaches for modeling agents' behavior, taking into account either explicit spatial (lattice based) structures or networks. Some emphasis is placed on recent ABM as applied to the description of the dynamics of the geographical distribution of economic activities, - out of equilibrium.
