    Survey on the Prevalence of Measurement in Undergraduate Psychology Curricula across the United States

    For several years, especially with the increasing use of high-stakes assessments, the high demand for qualified testing specialists has far exceeded the low supply, naturally resulting in a severe shortage of quantitative psychologists. One possible solution for combatting this imbalance is to increase the exposure of psychometric methods within national curricula for educating undergraduate students of psychology. Therefore, the current study seeks to assess the prevalence of psychological measurement across national undergraduate psychology curricula, since it has not been evaluated for roughly 15 years. Six hundred fifty psychology department chairpersons across the United States were emailed invitations to complete a 22-item survey pertaining to the prevalence of measurement within their own undergraduate psychology curriculum. Results indicated that psychometrics is becoming slightly more prevalent as compared to 15 years ago; however, measurement coverage is still failing to reach the recommended guidelines set by national conventions for the undergraduate education of psychology students.     Incorporating Wisdom Christology into the Phronesis of Courtyard Church of Christ

    The purpose of this project was to address an identified problem Courtyard Church of Christ members were having with decision-making in a way that promoted shalom and reflected Christ to the world. I proposed that Wisdom Christology could assist in the decision-making process and formed an intervention team of five additional people from within the congregation to explore the situation through participatory action research. We met for six sessions in the early months of 2020. The team embarked on a thorough examination of Wisdom Christology through the Scriptures climaxing in the Wisdom Hymn of Col 1:15–20. Our subsequent collective understanding of Wisdom guided us in the creation of a four-part intervention plan to incorporate Wisdom Christology into the congregation’s phronesis. The first component of the intervention plan is a twelve-part sermon series on Wisdom Christology using twelve key passages from the Old and New Testaments. Second, the members are invited to attend Wisdom Feasts in small groups in homes to discuss real-life decisions they are facing. This is done with the assistance of a mnemonic device pamphlet that was created by the intervention team. Finally, the intervention brings the church into a silent retreat to observe Wisdom’s revelation in creation. The culminating effect of this plan is intended to help the members make decisions more confidently and for those decisions to promote shalom, thus bearing witness to Christ in the world. Fundamental aspects of this project are that God has a plan for Wisdom to bring people into reconciliation, and Wisdom is revealed in all of creation. Also, wisdom is fully embodied in Christ. Therefore, Wisdom is available in Christ’s example, but also by participating with Christ who is present in the body of the church. This plan helps the church restore Wisdom as a primary virtue of the Christian faith and helps them to recognize Wisdom in their midst for maturity in phronesis

    Using operational scenarios in a virtual reality enhanced design process

    Maritime user interfaces for ships’ bridges are highly dependent on the context in which they are used, and rich maritime context is difficult to recreate in the early stages of user-centered design processes. Operations in Arctic waters where crews are faced with extreme environmental conditions, technology limitations and a lack of accurate navigational information further increase this challenge. There is a lack of research supporting the user-centered design of workplaces for hazardous Arctic operations. To meet this challenge, this paper reports on the process of developing virtual reality-reconstructed operational scenarios to connect stakeholders, end-users, designers, and human factors specialists in a joint process. This paper explores how virtual reality-reconstructed operational scenarios can be used as a tool both for concept development and user testing. Three operational scenarios were developed, implemented in a full mission bridge simulator, recreated in virtual reality (VR), and finally tested on navigators (end-users). Qualitative data were captured throughout the design process and user-testing, resulting in a thematic analysis that identified common themes reflecting the experiences gained throughout this process. In conclusion, we argue that operational scenarios, rendered in immersive media such as VR, may be an important and reusable asset when supporting maritime design processes and in maritime training and education

    Effects of Motion Sickness on Encoding and Retrieval Performance and on Psychophysiological Responses

    Background: Motion sickness has previously been found to deteriorate performance. In complex working environments, sustained ability to perform despite motion sickness is crucial. This study focuses on effects of motion sickness on encoding and retrieval of words. In addition, the temporal development of psychophysiological responses and their relationship with perceived motion sickness were investigated. Methods: Forty healthy participants (20 male and 20 female, age 19-51) performed an encoding and retrieval task during exposure to an optokinetic drum and were compared with 20 controls (8 male and 12 female, age 21-47) not exposed to motion sickness. Measurements of heart rate, heart rate variability, skin conductance, blood volume pulse, respiration rate, and skin temperature were made throughout optokinetic drum exposure. Results: Moderate levels of motion sickness did not affect the ability to encode or retrieve words. Perceived motion sickness was positively related to heart rate, blood volume pulse and skin temperature and negatively related to respiration rate. Conclusions: The psychophysiological measurements did not show consistent patterns of sympathetic activation and parasympathetic withdrawal, as could be expected. Subjective reports of progressing symptoms are still likely to be the most reliable way of assessing motion sickness

    Assimilation of atmospheric infrasound data to constrain tropospheric and stratospheric winds

    This data assimilation study exploits infrasound from explosions to probe an atmospheric wind component from the ground up to stratospheric altitudes. Planned explosions of old ammunition in Finland generate transient infrasound waves that travel through the atmosphere. These waves are partially reflected back towards the ground from stratospheric levels, and are detected at a receiver station located in northern Norway at 178 km almost due North from the explosion site. The difference between the true horizontal direction towards the source and the backazimuth direction(the horizontal direction of arrival) of the incoming infrasound wave-fronts, in combination with the pulse propagation time, are exploited to provide an estimate of the average cross-wind component in the penetrated atmosphere. We perform offline assimilation experiments with an ensemble Kalman filter and these observations, using the ERA5 ensemble reanalysis atmospheric product as background(prior) for the wind at different vertical levels. We demonstrate that information from both source scan be combined to obtain analysis (posterior) estimates of cross-winds at different vertical levels of the atmospheric slice between the explosion site and the recording station. The assimilation makes greatest impact at the 12−60 km levels, with some changes with respect to the prior of the order of 0.1−1.0 m/s, which is a magnitude larger than the typical standard deviation of the ERA5 background. The reduction of background variance in the higher levels often reached 2−5%. This is the first published study demonstrating techniques to implement assimilation of infrasound data into atmospheric models. It paves the way for further exploration in the use of infrasound observations– especially natural and continuous sources – to probe the middle atmospheric dynamics and to assimilate these data into atmospheric model products

    Genome-wide association study of adipocyte lipolysis in the GENetics of Adipocyte Lipolysis (GENiAL) cohort

    Objectives: Lipolysis, hydrolysis of triglycerides to fatty acids in adipocytes, is tightly regulated, poorly understood, and, if perturbed, can lead to metabolic diseases including obesity and type 2 diabetes. The goal of this study was to identify the genetic regulators of lipolysis and elucidate their molecular mechanisms. Methods: Adipocytes from abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies were isolated and were incubated without (spontaneous lipolysis) or with a catecholamine (stimulated lipolysis) to analyze lipolysis. DNA was extracted and genome-wide genotyping and imputation conducted. After quality control, 939 samples with genetic and lipolysis data were available. Genome-wide association studies of spontaneous and stimulated lipolysis were conducted. Subsequent in vitro gene expression analyses were used to identify candidate genes and explore their regulation of adipose tissue biology. Results: One locus on chromosome 19 demonstrated genome-wide significance with spontaneous lipolysis. 60 loci showed suggestive associations with spontaneous or stimulated lipolysis, of which many influenced both traits. In the chromosome 19 locus, only HIF3A was expressed in the adipocytes and displayed genotype-dependent gene expression. HIF3A knockdown in vitro increased lipolysis and the expression of key lipolysis-regulating genes. Conclusions: In conclusion, we identified a genetic regulator of spontaneous lipolysis and provided evidence of HIF3A as a novel key regulator of lipolysis in subcutaneous adipocytes as the mechanism through which the locus influences adipose tissue biology
