Using Digital Video Recordings in Class Activities for Enhancing Mathematics Pre-Service Teachersâ Reflective Thinking
Digital video recordings (DVRs) have become an effective tool in sustainable teacher education. In the current study, our aim was to investigate the impact of utilizing mobile applications for DVRs in classroom activities, designed to address misconceptions of mathematical concepts, on pre-service teachersâ capacity of reflective thinking. Two groups of approximately 10 PSTs participated in an education program. The participants learned as third-year students in the Department of Mathematics Education. Interviews and digital video-recorded observations were used as data collection tools. Deductive and inductive content analysis would be used as data analysis tools. The study showed that the DVR environment constituted a sustainable educational environment that supported PSTsâ development in writing reflections on their mathematics teaching. These results underscore the significance of using digital platforms for PSTsâ education, particularly for promoting metacognitive thinking practices such as reflective thinking
Hepatoprotective, Antioxidant, and Anticancer Effects of the Tragopogon porrifolius
Tragopogon porrifolius (Asteraceae), commonly referred to as white salsify, is an edible herb used in Lebanese folk medicine to treat cancer and liver dysfunction. In this study, we investigated the antioxidant activity of Tragopogon porrifolius methanolic extract, both in vitro and in vivo, in addition to its hepatoprotective and anticancer activities. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were measured and found to be âmgâGAE/g and âmgâQE/g dry weight, respectively. In vitro antioxidant assays revealed an FRAP value of â”mol Fe2+/g of extract and DPPH IC50 value 15.2â”g/mL. In rats subjected to CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity, significant increase in CAT, SOD, and GST levels was detected. The highest dose of the extract (250âmg/kg) recorded a fold increase of 1.68 for SOD, 2.49 for GST, and 3.2 for CAT. The extract also showed substantial decrease in AST (57%), ALT (56%), and LDH (65%) levels. Additionally, the extract caused a dose-dependent decrease in cell viability and proliferation. In conclusion, the methanolic extract of T. porrifolius displayed a relatively high antioxidant activity both in vitro and in vivo as well as hepatoprotective potential against liver toxicity in rats and anticancer effect on MDA-MB-231 and Caco-2 cells.PublishedN/

A Bayesian Feature Allocation Model for Identifying Cell Subpopulations Using CyTOF Data
A Bayesian feature allocation model (FAM) is presented for identifying cell subpopulations based on multiple samples of cell surface or intracellular marker expression level data obtained by cytometry by time of flight (CyTOF). Cell subpopulations are characterized by differences in marker expression patterns, and cells are clustered into subpopulations based on their observed expression levels. A model-based method is used to construct cell clusters within each sample by modeling subpopulations as latent features, using a finite Indian buffet process. Non-ignorable missing data due to technical artifacts in mass cytometry instruments are accounted for by defining a static missingship mechanism. In contrast with conventional cell clustering methods, which cluster observed marker expression levels separately for each sample, the FAM-based method can be applied simultaneously to multiple samples, and also identify important cell subpopulations likely to be otherwise missed. The proposed FAM-based method is applied to jointly analyse three CyTOF datasets to study natural killer (NK) cells. Because the subpopulations identified by the FAM may define novel NK cell subsets, this statistical analysis may provide useful information about the biology of NK cells and their potential role in cancer immunotherapy which may lead, in turn, to development of improved NK cell therapies
Biplot analysis of strawberry genotypes recommended for the State of EspĂrito Santo.
Most strawberry genotypes grown commercially in Brazil originate from breeding programs in the United States, and are therefore not adapted to the various soil and climatic conditions found in Brazil. Thus, quantifying the magnitude of genotype x environment (GE) interactions serves as a primary means for increasing average Brazilian strawberry yields, and helps provide specific recommendations for farmers on which genotypes meet high yield and phenotypic stability thresholds. The aim of this study was to use AMMI (additive main effects and multiplicative interaction) and GGE biplot (genotype main effects + genotype x environment interaction) analyses to identify high-yield, stable strawberry genotypes grown at three locations in EspĂrito Santo for two agricultural years. We evaluated seven strawberry genotypes (Dover, Camino Real, Ventana, Camarosa, Seascape, Diamante, and Aromas) at three locations (Domingos Martins, IĂșna, and Muniz Freire) in agricultural years 2006 and 2007, totaling six study environments. Joint analysis of variance was calculated using yield data (t/ha), and AMMI and GGE biplot analysis was conducted following the detection of a significant genotypes x agricultural years x locations (G x A x L) interaction. During the two agricultural years, evaluated locations were allocated to different regions on biplot graphics using both methods, indicating distinctions among them. Based on the results obtained from the two methods used in this study to investigate the G x A x L interaction, we recommend growing the Camarosa genotype for production at the three locations assessed due to the high frequency of favorable alleles, which were expressed in all localities evaluated regardless of the agricultural year
Leptospirosis severity may be associated with the intensity of humoral immune response
Leptospirosis severity may be increasing, with pulmonary involvement becoming more frequent. Does this increase result from an intense immune response to leptospire? Notice that renal failure, thrombocytopenia and pulmonary complications are found during the immune phase. Thirty-five hospitalized patients with Weil's disease had 5 blood samples drawn, from the 15th day to the 12th month of symptoms, for ELISA-IgM, -IgG and -IgA specific antibody detection. According their 1st IgG titer, the patients were divided into: group 1 (n = 13) titer >; 1:400 (positive) and group 2 (n = 22) titerA gravidade da leptospirose parece estar aumentando principalmente quanto ao envolvimento pulmonar. Viability of the UENF popcorn improvement program based on divergence in S1 families.
With the objective of evaluating the viability of the programme of recurrent selection with popcorn of the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro carried out in Campos dos Goytacazes and Itaocara, state of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), 40 families that originated the second cycle were evaluated for 14 morphoagronomical characteristics and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers, using multivariate analysis. The analyses of variance revealed the existence of variability for most evaluated morphoagronomic traits. Clustering by Tocher's optimization method for the morphoagronomic traits of Campos dos Goytacazes formed eight groups and 16 for those of Itaocara. For the RAPD markers, 18 groups of S1 families were formed by Ward's clustering method. It is concluded that there is genetic divergence in the selected families, which allows the inference that there is sufficient variability for the continuity of the recurrent selection process with the formation of new cycles.
Molecular analysis of genetic diversity among vine accessions using DNA markers.
Viticulture presents a number of economic and social advantages, such as increasing employment levels and fixing the labor force in rural areas. With the aim of initiating a program of genetic improvement in grapevine from the State University of the state of Rio de Janeiro North Darcy Ribeiro, genetic diversity between 40 genotypes (varieties, rootstock, and species of different subgenera) was evaluated using Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) molecular markers. We built a matrix of binary data, whereby the presence of a band was assigned as "1" and the absence of a band was assigned as "0". The genetic distance was calculated between pairs of genotypes based on the arithmetic complement from the Jaccard Index. The results revealed the presence of considerable variability in the collection. Analysis of the genetic dissimilarity matrix revealed that the most dissimilar genotypes were Rupestris du Lot and Vitis rotundifolia because they were the most genetically distant (0.5972). The most similar were genotypes 31 (unidentified) and Rupestris du lot, which showed zero distance, confirming the results of field observations. A duplicate was confirmed, consistent with field observations, and a short distance was found between the variety "Italy" and its mutation, "Ruby". The grouping methods used were somewhat concordant
