Samples were obtained in the littoral region of 74 waters from various parts of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Cladocera and Copepoda found in the collections were listed. Sixty-two species were recorded which included 47 species of Cladocera and 15 species of Copepoda. Twenty-six species of Cladocera and 12 species of Copepoda represent new records for the Province. In addition, a new cyclopoid copepod species was described, Paracyclops yeatmani n. sp. -- A quantitative study was made of the littoral microcrustaceans in a bog pond and a marsh located on the Avalon Peninsula from May, 1972 to May, 1973. The maximum standing stocks were similar in the two localities. The dominant forms in the summer and fall in the marsh were Cladocera: Acantholeberis curvirostris, Biapertura intermedia, Chydorus sphaericus, and Ilyocryptus spinifer. In the winter the copepod, Macrocyclops albidus, was dominant, while Cyclops varicans rubellus was the most abundant species in the spring. The bog pond also was dominated by Cladocera in the summer and fall; namely; Acroperus alonoides, Alona rustica, Alonella excisa, Chydorus sphaericus, and Sida crystallina. The copepods, Eucyclops agilis and Macrocyclops albidus, were dominant in the winter and early spring. -- Qualitative seasonal succession and the relative abundance of Cladocera and Copepoda were studied in 10 waters on the Avalon Peninsula. This provided seasonal data for 38 species. Such studies showed that sampling on one date seldom revealed all species known for a particular water body. -- Plant and microcrustacean associations were investigated. The results suggest that some microcrustaceans are associated with particular plant species (or types). Also, some Cladocera may utilize particular parts of a plant. -- Observations were made on the feeding habits and predators of some littoral microcrustaceans

Introduction: Cancer of the cervix is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women, especially in developing countries affecting women at a time of life when they are critical to social and economic stability.Method: The study was conducted at Finote Selam City Administration from February 01 to March 01, 2017 using a community-based cross-sectional study design. The representative sample size was selected using multistage sampling technique. The data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire adapted from the previous study. Data were entered using EpiData Version 3.1 statistical software and analyzed using SPSS version 20 statistical package.Result: One hundred seventy (23.1%) were knowledgeable about cervical cancer whereas 63% of participants had a negative attitude and only 7.3% had ever screened for the disease. Logistic regression analysis showed that age, marital status, religion, experienced sexual intercourse and age at 1st sexual intercourse were found to be significantly associated with the knowledge of cancer of the cervix. Conclusion: Ministry of health in collaboration with other concerned bodies should design a strategy to give education about cervical cancer including information on risk factors, signs and symptoms; and availability of screening should be provided for women and as well as for the public. Keywords: Cervical cancer, screening, Finote Selam, North West Ethiopia

OneG: A Computational Tool for Predicting Cryptic Intermediates in the Unfolding Kinetics of Proteins under Native Conditions

Understanding the relationships between conformations of proteins and their stabilities is one key to address the protein folding paradigm. The free energy change (ΔG) of unfolding reactions of proteins is measured by traditional denaturation methods and native hydrogen-deuterium (H/D) exchange methods. However, the free energy of unfolding (ΔGU) and the free energy of exchange (ΔGHX) of proteins are not in good agreement, though the experimental conditions of both methods are well matching to each other. The anomaly is due to any one or combinations of the following reasons: (i) effects of cis-trans proline isomerisation under equilibrium unfolding reactions of proteins (ii) inappropriateness in accounting the baselines of melting curves (iii) presence of cryptic intermediates, which may elude the melting curve analysis and (iv) existence of higher energy metastable states in the H/D exchange reactions of proteins. Herein, we have developed a novel computational tool, OneG, which accounts the discrepancy between ΔGU and ΔGHX of proteins by systematically accounting all the four factors mentioned above. The program is fully automated and requires four inputs: three-dimensional structures of proteins, ΔGU, ΔGU* and residue-specific ΔGHX determined under EX2-exchange conditions in the absence of denaturants. The robustness of the program has been validated using experimental data available for proteins such as cytochrome c and apocytochrome b562 and the data analyses revealed that cryptic intermediates of the proteins detected by the experimental methods and the cryptic intermediates predicted by the OneG for those proteins were in good agreement. Furthermore, using OneG, we have shown possible existence of cryptic intermediates and metastable states in the unfolding pathways of cardiotoxin III and cobrotoxin, respectively, which are homologous proteins. The unique application of the program to map the unfolding pathways of proteins under native conditions have been brought into fore and the program is publicly available at http://sblab.sastra.edu/oneg.htm

Repeated successful surgical rescues of early and delayed multiple ruptures of ventricular septum, right ventricle and aneurysmal left ventricle following massive biventricular infarction

A 58 year old man underwent 6 surgical interventions for various complications of massive biventricular myocardial infarction over a period of 2 years following acute occlusion of a possibly "hyperdominant" left anterior descending coronary artery. These included concomitant repair of apicoanterior post-infarction VSD and right ventricular free wall rupture, repeat repair of recurrent VSD following inferoposterior extension of VSD in the infarcted septum 5 weeks later, repair of delayed right ventricular free wall rupture 4 weeks subsequently, repair of a bleeding left ventricular aneurysm eroding through left chest wall 16 months thereafter, repair of right upper lobe lung tear causing massive anterior mediastinal haemorrhage, mimicking yet another cardiac rupture, 2 months later, followed, at the same admission, 2 weeks later, by sternal reconstruction for dehisced and infected sternum using pedicled myocutaneous latissimus dorsi flap. 5 years after the latissimus myoplasty, the patient remains in NYHA class 1 and is leading a normal life

Abstract Objective This study aimed to describe coping strategies for job stress among nurses working in Jimma Zone public hospitals, South-west Ethiopia. The study conducted from March to April 2014 through census using English version structured self-administered questionnaire. Result This study indicated percentage mean overall score of 65.07% for adaptive coping approach and 56.86% for a maladaptive approach. Nurses mostly used coping strategy were; just concentrating on what they have to do, make a plan of action and following it, developing coworker/peer support, and having a close friend to tell. While, coping strategy that least used among nurses were; do not want to come to work when stressed, directly expressing anger on family or friends, trying to feel better by taking drinks like tea, coffee, soft drinks more than usual and accept the situation because there is nothing to do. In summary, an adaptive approach was dominant style; social support and plan-full problem solving were the most preferred strategies. While escape-avoidance coping strategy least used. Further researches need to be conducted to explore its predictors
