By-Plant Nitrogen Response as a Function of Delayed Emergence in Corn (Zea mays L.)

Determining the correct nitrogen (N) rate for plants of uneven emergence should prove to be beneficial for increasing nitrogen use efficiency and crop yields. Delayed plants were planted 4, 7, and 10 days after initial planting, along with receiving varying amounts of by-plant N fertilizer to assess nitrogen response. At Lake Carl Blackwell (1), for each day delay in planting corn grain yields decreased by 1,034 kg ha-1, when 67 kg N/ha was applied preplant. At Lake Carl Blackwell (2), a yield reduction of 178 kg ha-1 for every day delay in planting for the 67 kg N/ha preplant N rate was observed. When sidedress N was applied, with addition preplant N, yield reductions due to delayed planting were less pronounced. Over all sites, delayed emergence decreased average grain yields thus highlighting the need to homogenize plant emergence.Department of Plant and Soil Science

A General Synthesis of C8-Arylpurine Phosphoramidite

    Get PDF
A general scheme for the synthesis of C8-arylpurine phosphoramidites has been developed. C8-Arylation of C8-bromo-2′-deoxyguanosine is the key step and has been achieved through the use of a Suzuki coupling. Since the coupling reaction is conducted under aqueous conditions, it is unnecessary to protect and then deprotect the hydroxyl groups, thus saving several steps and improving overall yields. Once the C8-arylgroup is introduced, the glycosidic bond becomes very sensitive to acid catalyzed cleavage. Protection of the amino groups as the corresponding N,N-dimethylformamidine derivative improves stability of the derivatives. Synthetic C8-arylpurines were successfully used to prepare synthetic oligonucleotides

An examination of the effects of self-regulatory focus on the perception of the media richness: the case of email

    Get PDF
Communication is a key element in organizations’ business success. The media richness theory and the channel expansion theory are two of the most influential theories regarding the selection and use of communication media in organizations; however, literature has focused little on the effects of self-regulation by managers and employees in these theories. To analyze these topics, this study develops an empirical investigation by gathering data from 600 managers and employees using a questionnaire. The results suggest that the perception of media richness is positively affected when the individual shows a promotion focus or strategy.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author’s final draft

Exploring a developing tourism industry: A resource-based view approach.

This exploratory study examines dimensions related to tourism development in the case of Uruguay. Internal and external analyses were conducted to identify key resources to maximise opportunities and minimise threats to the country’s tourism development. The study, which adopts the resource-based view of the firm, is based on the perspectives of key tourism stakeholders. Unstructured, face-to-face interviews were conducted with eight key informants, three representing government institutions, three private, and two public-private. The interviews revealed opportunities in various fronts, primarily consolidating and expanding international markets, and developing additional offerings, including convention/event and heritage tourism to minimise the effects of seasonality. Strong dependence on neighbouring markets, marginal airline connectivity and knowledge of Uruguay internationally were main perceived barriers to further development. The value of employing the resource-based framework in guiding understanding of the themes under investigation was confirmed. Implications emerging from the findings are discussed, and future research directions suggested
