Permanente und temporäre Erblindung nach operativen Eingriffen am Orbitaboden bei Orbitabodenfrakturen:Risiko und Behandlungsstrategie

Das Risiko für eine Erblindung nach Orbitabodenrevision wurde in einer Metaanalyse von Lentrodt et al. 1991 beschrieben. Inzwischen haben sich durch Einsatz neuerer Materialien zur Rekonstruktion die Rahmenbedingungen verändert. In einer retrospektiven Studie werden die Daten bei Patienten mit Orbitabodenfrakturen analysiert. Von September 2000 bis Dezember 2009 wurde bei 41 % der Patienten mit einer Fraktur des Jochbeins und/oder des Orbitabodens (422 von 1022) eine Orbitabodenrevision durchgeführt. Postoperativ wurde durch ein strenges Konzept die Sehfähigkeit für 24 Stunden regelmäßig überwacht. Während der Kontrollen trat bei 8 Patienten eine Amaurose auf. Durch sofortige Intervention konnte in 6 Fällen die Erblindung wieder vollständig behoben werden; in 2 Fällen (0,47 %) persistierte die Erblindung. Auch bei optimalen Bedingungen durch enge Kooperation mit der Augenklinik sowie einem strengen Kontrollprotokoll verbleibt ein Restrisiko für eine permanente Erblindung

Personal Strategic Plan: An Innovative Assignment for the Undergraduate Capstone Strategy Course

In undergraduate business education, the high expectation and hope is that students will graduate prepared to meet the challenges of a complex business work world. Most business schools offer the capstone Business Strategy course, which typically includes a combination of lectures and exercises with a heavy emphasis on case studies and industry analysis, as well as one of the Strategy Game simulations. We believe the Strategy course can be improved by using the Personal Strategic Plan (PSP), an exercise requiring students to apply analytical tools to their own lives and career plans. Structural Characterization of the Extracellular Domain of CASPR2 and Insights into Its Association with the Novel Ligand Contactin1

Contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CNTNAP2) encodes for CASPR2, a multidomain single transmembrane protein belonging to the neurexin superfamily that has been implicated in a broad range of human phenotypes including autism and language impairment. Using a combination of biophysical techniques, including small angle x-ray scattering, single particle electron microscopy, analytical ultracentrifugation, and bio-layer interferometry, we present novel structural and functional data that relate the architecture of the extracellular domain of CASPR2 to a previously unknown ligand, Contactin1 (CNTN1). Structurally, CASPR2 is highly glycosylated and has an overall compact architecture. Functionally, we show that CASPR2 associates with micromolar affinity with CNTN1 but, under the same conditions, it does not interact with any of the other members of the contactin family. Moreover, by using dissociated hippocampal neurons we show that microbeads loaded with CASPR2, but not with a deletion mutant, co-localize with transfected CNTN1, suggesting that CNTN1 is an endogenous ligand for CASPR2. These data provide novel insights into the structure and function of CASPR2, suggesting a complex role of CASPR2 in the nervous system

The Emerging Field of Positive Psychology Viewed through the Lens of Proverbs

Proverbs 23:7. As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. Positive psychology, along with related fields such as Psychological Capital, Happiness, and Emotional Intelligence hold great promise for improving lives. This presentation seeks to break some new ground and encourage Christian scholars and students to engage in more research and scholarship in this area and to assimilate more of this integrated perspective into our classrooms. It will also present some preliminary empirical data gathered among ONU students and will end with a brief discussion session
