Symbolic Sequences and Tsallis Entropy

We address this work to investigate symbolic sequences with long-range correlations by using computational simulation. We analyze sequences with two, three and four symbols that could be repeated $l$ times, with the probability distribution $p(l)\propto 1/ l^{\mu}$. For these sequences, we verified that the usual entropy increases more slowly when the symbols are correlated and the Tsallis entropy exhibits, for a suitable choice of $q$, a linear behavior. We also study the chain as a random walk-like process and observe a nonusual diffusive behavior depending on the values of the parameter $\mu$.Comment: Published in the Brazilian Journal of Physic

Exploring bioactive compounds present in international patents targeting brain functions

The interest in nervous system disorders is an evident fact with more than 60 000 articles published on PUBMED only in the year of 2016. Actually, in our daily life we are constantly exposed to different environmental factors known to be prejudicial to the health of our nervous system. In this context, a holistic view of food consumption is gaining increasing importance with the perspective of using functional components of specific foods to improve our health or diminish the risk of disease. The aim of our work is to evaluate the use of nutritional food components of traditional Portuguese diet in international patents of dietary supplements or the so called functional foods described to improve brain functions. The WIPO platform was used to collect data of these patents, and from the last 3 years we identified 35 patents using more than 150 different components. We selected the most frequent components and the indications described in the patents, and then examined the possible bioactive compounds for each component. The prevalent functional components described were walnuts, peanuts, wolfberries, mulberries, dates, jujube, creatine, carnitine, ginseng and soybean. Other components rich in omega-3, such as docosahexaenoic acid and superba oil, were also identified. These patents were described to target brain functions such as intelligence, memory, concentration and in some cases compounds are indicated to traumatic brain injury. Regarding local sources, we found several nutritional components of traditional Portuguese diet that have similar compounds of those found in the international components described in patents. South Portugal population genetic analysis with 17 loci STRs

In routine casework it is important to establish a population genetic database for further reliable statistical analyses. AmpF1STRIdentifiler (Applied Biosystems) and Geneprint Powerplex 16 (Promega Corporation, Madison WI, USA) are multiplex kits wich co-amplifie 17 STR - loci including the segment of X-Y homologous gene Amelogenina routinely used in our laboratory. 13 core short tandem repeat loci standardized under the combined DNA Index System (Codis): CSF1PO, D3S1358, D5S818, D13S317, D16S539, D18S51, D21S11, vWA, FGA, TH01, TPOX, two additional tetranucleotide loci - D2S1338 and D19S433 – and two additional pentanucleotides – Penta E and Penta D. The purpose of this study is to determine the allele distribution data of the 17 STR loci in 2445 caucasian unrelated individuals from the south of Portugal, 176 unrelated individuals from Cabo Verde and 102 unrelated individuals from Angola and compare it with the values of the all the population resident in the same area. Allele frequencies for each locus observed heterozygosity, expected heterozygosity, power of exclusion, power of discrimination, and p values of chi-square test for departures from Hardy-Weinberg expectations were calculated.N/

Relationship between optimism, disease variables, and health perception and quality of life in individuals with epilepsy.

[email protected] Abstract Epilepsy is a relatively frequent chronic condition with an important impact on the health perception and quality of life (QOL) of patients. The aim of the present study was to identify variables related to health status perception and QOL in persons with epilepsy. Participants were 200 persons with epilepsy, 53.5% of whom were males. The mean age was 39.6; 95% had seizures, and 99% were taking antiepileptic medication. The self-report questionnaire administered assessed four types of variables: demographic, disease, epilepsy-specific optimistic attitude, and outcome variables. Results demonstrated that an optimistic orientation is related to better perception of physical and mental health status and better perception of QOL. The variables that best predict positive outcomes are optimistic orientation, perception of cognitive functioning, and perception of seizure control. These results question the importance attributed to seizure characteristics for everyday functioning and everyday life of individuals with epilepsy, and stress the importance of facilitating an epilepsy-specific optimistic orientation.
