    Long-Term Bidirectional Association Between Asthma and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Big Data Cohort Study

    BACKGROUND: Previous studies have argued that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with asthma. However, reliable evidence to verify this association has not yet been reported. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the bidirectional association between asthma and ADHD through a 12-year big data cohort study. METHODS: The independent variable group was extracted from 3.5 million individuals randomly sampled by the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS). In Study 1, the incidence of ADHD according to asthma was evaluated, while in Study 2, the incidence of asthma according to ADHD was analyzed. Propensity score (PS) matching with several variables was used to obtain a control group. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: In Study 1, the asthma group included 131,937 individuals and the non-asthma group included 131,937 individuals. The adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) for ADHD in the asthma group was 1.17 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.11-1.23]. In subgroup analysis, the aHRs for ADHD of individuals in the subgroups male sex, 0-5 years old, 6-10 years old, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) 1, and CCI \u3e 2 were significant (aHR: 2.83, 1.70, 1.79, 1.09, 1.15, 1.06, and 1.49, respectively). In Study 2, ADHD was found to significantly affect asthma in all age groups (aHRs of the subgroups 0∼60 and 0∼17 years old were 1.10 and 1.09, respectively). In the 0∼17 years old subgroup, the association of ADHD with asthma was greater with younger age (aHRs of the subgroups 0∼5 and 6∼10 years old were 2.53 and 1.54, respectively). CONCLUSION: From long-term follow-up, the incidence of ADHD was 1.17 times higher in the asthma group than in the control group. The incidence of asthma was 1.10 times higher in the ADHD group than in the control group. Asthma and ADHD have a bidirectional relationship, and childhood asthma and ADHD should be rigorously managed

    Case report: Management of recurrent pupillary optic capture with sutureless surgical technique using 7–0 polypropylene flange

    BackgroundTo report a novel surgical technique for recurrent pupillary optic capture after flanged intraocular lens (IOL) fixation.MethodsIn this retrospective case series, we detail our use of two parallel 7–0 polypropylene sutures passed between the iris plane and the optic of scleral-fixated IOL to address pupillary optic capture. Flanges were created using ophthalmic cautery to secure it to the sclera without suture.ResultsTwo eyes with pupillary optic capture underwent a sutureless surgical technique using 7–0 polypropylene flanges. No recurrences of pupillary optic capture were observed during the 1-year follow-up.ConclusionOur sutureless surgical technique using a 7–0 polypropylene flange was an effective, efficient, and less invasive approach for treating recurrent pupillary optic capture

    Genetic, management, and nutritional factors affecting intramuscular fat deposition in beef cattle — A review

    Intramuscular fat (IMF) content in skeletal muscle including the longissimus dorsi muscle (LM), also known as marbling fat, is one of the most important factors determining beef quality in several countries including Korea, Japan, Australia, and the United States. Genetics and breed, management, and nutrition affect IMF deposition. Japanese Black cattle breed has the highest IMF content in the world, and Korean cattle (also called Hanwoo) the second highest. Here, we review results of research on genetic factors (breed and sex differences and heritability) that affect IMF deposition. Cattle management factors are also important for IMF deposition. Castration of bulls increases IMF deposition in most cattle breeds. The effects of several management factors, including weaning age, castration, slaughter weight and age, and environmental conditions on IMF deposition are also reviewed. Nutritional factors, including fat metabolism, digestion and absorption of feed, glucose/starch availability, and vitamin A, D, and C levels are important for IMF deposition. Manipulating IMF deposition through developmental programming via metabolic imprinting is a recently proposed nutritional method to change potential IMF deposition during the fetal and neonatal periods in rodents and domestic animals. Application of fetal nutritional programming to increase IMF deposition of progeny in later life is reviewed. The coordination of several factors affects IMF deposition. Thus, a combination of several strategies may be needed to manipulate IMF deposition, depending on the consumer’s beef preference. In particular, stage-specific feeding programs with concentrate-based diets developed by Japan and Korea are described in this article

    Direct Observation of Defects and Increased Ion Permeability of a Membrane Induced by Structurally Disordered Cu/Zn-Superoxide Dismutase Aggregates

    Interactions between protein aggregates and a cellular membrane have been strongly implicated in many protein conformational diseases. However, such interactions for the case of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) protein, which is related to fatal neurodegenerative disorder amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), have not been explored yet. For the first time, we report the direct observation of defect formation and increased ion permeability of a membrane induced by SOD1 aggregates using a supported lipid bilayer and membrane patches of human embryonic kidney cells as model membranes. We observed that aggregated SOD1 significantly induced the formation of defects within lipid membranes and caused the perturbation of membrane permeability, based on surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and electrophysiology. In the case of apo SOD1 with an unfolded structure, we found that it bound to the lipid membrane surface and slightly perturbed membrane permeability, compared to other folded proteins (holo SOD1 and bovine serum albumin). The changes in membrane integrity and permeability were found to be strongly dependent on the type of proteins and the amount of aggregates present. We expect that the findings presented herein will advance our understanding of the pathway by which structurally disordered SOD1 aggregates exert toxicity in vivo

    Minimal information for studies of extracellular vesicles (MISEV2023): From basic to advanced approaches

    Extracellular vesicles (EVs), through their complex cargo, can reflect the state of their cell of origin and change the functions and phenotypes of other cells. These features indicate strong biomarker and therapeutic potential and have generated broad interest, as evidenced by the steady year-on-year increase in the numbers of scientific publications about EVs. Important advances have been made in EV metrology and in understanding and applying EV biology. However, hurdles remain to realising the potential of EVs in domains ranging from basic biology to clinical applications due to challenges in EV nomenclature, separation from non-vesicular extracellular particles, characterisation and functional studies. To address the challenges and opportunities in this rapidly evolving field, the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles (ISEV) updates its 'Minimal Information for Studies of Extracellular Vesicles', which was first published in 2014 and then in 2018 as MISEV2014 and MISEV2018, respectively. The goal of the current document, MISEV2023, is to provide researchers with an updated snapshot of available approaches and their advantages and limitations for production, separation and characterisation of EVs from multiple sources, including cell culture, body fluids and solid tissues. In addition to presenting the latest state of the art in basic principles of EV research, this document also covers advanced techniques and approaches that are currently expanding the boundaries of the field. MISEV2023 also includes new sections on EV release and uptake and a brief discussion of in vivo approaches to study EVs. Compiling feedback from ISEV expert task forces and more than 1000 researchers, this document conveys the current state of EV research to facilitate robust scientific discoveries and move the field forward even more rapidly

    Haptic interface with multimodal tactile sensing and feedback for human–robot interaction

    Abstract Novel sensing and actuation technologies have notably advanced haptic interfaces, paving the way for more immersive user experiences. We introduce a haptic system that transcends traditional pressure-based interfaces by delivering more comprehensive tactile sensations. This system provides an interactive combination of a robotic hand and haptic glove to operate devices within the wireless communication range. Each component is equipped with independent sensors and actuators, enabling real-time mirroring of user’s hand movements and the effective transmission of tactile information. Remarkably, the proposed system has a multimodal feedback mechanism based on both vibration motors and Peltier elements. This mechanism ensures a varied tactile experience encompassing pressure and temperature sensations. The accuracy of tactile feedback is meticulously calibrated according to experimental data, thereby enhancing the reliability of the system and user experience. The Peltier element for temperature feedback allows users to safely experience temperatures similar to those detected by the robotic hand. Potential applications of this system are wide ranging and include operations in hazardous environments and medical interventions. By providing realistic tactile sensations, our haptic system aims to improve both the performance and safety of workers in such critical sectors, thereby highlighting the great potential of advanced haptic technologies

    협동 로봇의 적용 분야를 일상 범위로 확장시키기 위해, 합리적인 가격의 비전 솔루션 개발은 필수적이다. 본 논문에서는 3D 센서가 아닌 RGB 카메라 영상으로부터 물체의 위치 및 자세를 감지하기 위한 비전 프레임워크를 제안한다. 제안된 프레임워크는 Mask R-CNN을 통한 물체 영역 추출, Hourglass Network을 통한 물체 특징점 추출, 그리고 PnP 알고리즘을 통한 물체의 자세 감지의 세 단계로 이루어져 RGB 영상만으로부터 물체의 3차원 위치 및 자세를 인식할 수 있으며, 픽 앤 플레이스 작업을 무리없이 수행할 수 있는 수준의 정확도를 보였다.2

    Abstract Excessive clotting or abnormal platelet accumulation can lead to serious cardiovascular disorders such as atherosclerosis, stroke, and thrombosis. Therefore, it is imperative to identify compounds capable of controlling or impeding platelet aggregation to prevent the onset of cardiovascular diseases. Arteanoflavone, a compound extracted from Artemisia iwayomogi, has not garnered scientific recognition for its potential health benefits, recent studies have substantiated its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-allergic properties. However, the precise mechanisms by which arteanoflavone influences platelet aggregation and blood clot formation have not been conclusively established. This research investigates arteanoflavone’s role in these processes, particularly in platelets induced by collagen. The study reveals a significant increase in the production of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) correlating with the administered dosage of arteanoflavone. Concurrently, a noticeable escalation is observed in substrates of cAMP-dependent kinase and cGMP-dependent kinase, specifically VASP and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP3R). Arteanoflavone demonstrates its ability to limit Ca2+ movement in the dense tubular system through IP3R phosphorylation. Moreover, phosphorylated VASP inhibits the binding of fibrinogen to αIIb/β3, thus suppressing platelet activity. Arteanoflavone also stimulates the phosphorylation of PI3K/Akt, a protein linked to platelet granule release, and MAPK (ERK, JNK, and p38) protein, associated with both platelet granule release and TXA2 production. Lastly, arteanoflavone impedes collagen-induced platelet aggregation and blood clot formation by inhibiting fibrin production in thrombin-induced platelets. Hence, it is suggested that arteanoflavone could be valuable as an agent that effectively deters platelet inhibition and blood clot formation through antiplatelet mechanisms
