When bladder and brain collide: Is there a gender difference in the relationship between urinary incontinence, chronic depression, and anxiety?

In longitudinal and cross-sectional studies, depression and anxiety have been associated with urinary incontinence (UI) in women. However, this association has not been studied in men. Utilizing data from the 2008 Turkish Health Studies Survey conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute, we analyzed 13,830 participants aged 15 years and above. We investigated the association of UI with psychological discomfort in both sexes using multivariable logistic regression. High psychological discomfort significantly correlated with UI in males (OR 2.30, 95% CI 1.43–3.71) and females (OR 2.78, 95% CI 1.80–4.29). Anxiety increased UI likelihood in females (OR 2.36, 95% CI 1.61–3.46) and males (OR 2.37, 95% CI 1.10–5.13). Depression related significantly to UI in females (OR 2.54, 95% CI 1.81–3.58) but not males (OR 1.63, 95% CI 0.71–3.76). Antidepressant and anxiolytic use was not significantly related to UI in either gender. Anxiety and psychological discomfort contribute to UI in both genders. While depression significantly correlates with UI in females, it does not show the same magnitude and significance in males. Antidepressant and anxiolytic use did not significantly influence the association. These findings underscore the psychological distress-UI link, advocating a holistic approach for managing UI in individuals with mental health conditions

In this study, a measurement tool was developed that will serve to reveal level of reasoning, questioning, organizing information and transfer skills of fourth grade students. The study group of research consisted of 177 fourth grade students studying in 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years. Before developing the test, four thinking skills that are thought to develop through the philosophy for children approach were determined within framework of the relevant literature. Item pool was created in line with determined skills. In order to ensure validity of the test, item pool was sent to three experts. In general, experts stated that questions were suitable for relevant age group and skill to be measured, but there were points that needed to be corrected in terms of intelligibility. In line with opinions of experts, amendments were made to test items and an item was removed. After first trial application of 44-item test was carried out, item-total correlation values were examined to investigate the reliability of the test. In addition, item difficulty and discrimination indexes of each item were examined. As a result of analysis, items with low values were removed. The second trial and pre-trial applications were carried out with remaining test items and item analysis were made in the same way. Taking into account the content validity of items, two more questions were eliminated and test was finalized. The Cronbach alpha value of final test was found to be 0.691 and Mcdonalds omega value was 0.696. The developed test can be used with fourth-grade students to assess their development in relation to philosophy for children applications.

Coprecipitation with Cu(II)-4-(2-Pyridylazo)-resorcinol for Separation and Preconcentration of Fe(III) and Ni(II) in Water and Food Samples

The coprecipitation method is widely used for the preconcentration of trace metal ions prior to their determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). A simple and sensitive method based on coprecipitation of Fe(III) and Ni(II) ions with Cu(II)-4-(2-pyridylazo)-resorcinol was developed. The analytical parameters including pH, amount of copper (II), amount of reagent, sample volume, etc., were examined. It was found that the metal ions studied were quantitatively coprecipitated in the pH range of 5.0-6.5. The detection limits (DL) (n = 10, 3s/b) were found to be 0.68 mu g L(-1) for Fe(III) and 0.43 mu g L(-1) for Ni(II) and the relative standard deviations (RSD) were <= 4.0%. The proposed method was validated by the analysis of three certified reference materials (TMDA 54.4 fortified lake water, SRM 1568a rice flour, and GBW07605 tea) and recovery tests. The method was successfully applied to sea water, lake water, and various food samples

PMID: 37195720WOS:000988683400001Background/Purpose: This research was performed to determine the effect of naringenin (NAR) in experimental hyperuricemia (HU) induced by potassium oxonate (PO) on uric acid levels and xanthine oxidase (XO), inflammation, apoptotic pathway, DNA damage, and antioxidant system in kidney tissue. Study Design: Wistar Albino rats were categorized into four groups: (1) Control group, (2) PO group, (3) [PO+NAR] (2 weeks) group, and (4) PO (2 weeks)+NAR (2 weeks) group. Methods: The first group was not administered any drug. In group 2, PO was administered intraperitoneally 250 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks. In the third group, 100 mg/kg/day NAR was given intraperitoneally 1 hr after PO injection for 2 weeks. In the fourth group, PO was injected for the first 2 weeks, followed by NAR injection for the second 2 weeks. Serum uric acid levels, XO, nuclear factor-kappa B, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-17, cytochrome c, 8-Hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and caspase-3 levels in kidney were determined. Results: HU increased the levels of inflammatory and apoptotic parameters, XO, and 8-OHdG levels in kidney. Administration of NAR caused a decrease in these values and an increase in GPx levels. Conclusions: The results of the study show that NAR treatment reduces serum uric acid levels, and apoptosis, inflammation, and DNA damage; increases antioxidant activity in kidney in experimental HU
