    Synthesis of titanate nanostructures using amorphous precursor material and their adsorption/photocatalytic properties

    This paper reports on a new and swift hydrothermal chemical route to prepare titanate nanostructures (TNS) avoiding the use of crystalline TiO2 as starting material. The synthesis approach uses a commercial solution of TiCl3 as titanium source to prepare an amorphous precursor, circumventing the use of hazardous chemical compounds. The influence of the reaction temperature and dwell autoclave time on the structure and morphology of the synthesised materials was studied. Homogeneous titanate nanotubes with a high length/diameter aspect ratio were synthesised at 160^{\circ}C and 24 h. A band gap of 3.06\pm0.03 eV was determined for the TNS samples prepared in these experimental conditions. This value is red shifted by 0.14 eV compared to the band gap value usually reported for the TiO2 anatase. Moreover, such samples show better adsorption capacity and photocatalytic performance on the dye rhodamine 6G (R6G) photodegradation process than TiO2 nanoparticles. A 98% reduction of the R6G concentration was achieved after 45 minutes of irradiation of a 10 ppm dye aqueous solution and 1 g/L of TNS catalyst.Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Journal of Materials Scienc

    Preliminary Inventory of Boats and Gears in Manila Bay

    Recent information about the number and types of boats and gears used in Manila Bay is lacking. Here we discuss the results of the initial boat and gear inventory conducted in Manila Bay from May 2015 to October 2016. The survey was done in the coastal barangays of Cavite, Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, and Metro Manila. A total of 3,659 fishing boats were recorded from 84 coastal barangays or about 40% out of the 212 coastal barangays in Manila Bay. About 94.45% of the boats are municipal fishing boats and only 5.55% are commercial boats and the highest number of boats recorded was in Cavite (1,461 boats). 91.04% of the fishing boats are motorized and only 8.96% are non-motorized. The average fisher to boat ratio for the five provinces is 3.0:1, which is higher compared to the 2.4:1 result of MADECOR and National Museum Assessment (1995). There are 25 types of fishing gears recorded during the survey with a total of4, 946 units. Gillnet, specifically bottom gillnet, is the most dominant gear being used in Manila Bay

    The use of wet-laid techniques to obtain flax nonwovens with different thermoplastic binding fibers for technical insulation applications

    [EN] In this work, the wet-laid technique has been used to obtain flax nonwovens thermally bonded with different contents of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and bicomponent polyamide 6/copolyamide (PA6/CoPA) fibers in the 10-30 wt.% range. Scanning electron microscopy has been used to evaluate the formation of interlock points through melted polymer and flax fibers. Volume porosity has been estimated through determination of thickness and surface mass. Tensile strength and elongation at break have been determined on longitudinal (preferential) and transversal directions to evaluate anisotropy. The sound absorption properties of stacked sheets of flax: PVA and flax: PA6/CoPA nonwovens have been evaluated. In addition, the thermal insulating properties of individual nonwovens have been obtained. Mechanical characterization shows slight anisotropy. The absorption coefficient is interesting in the medium frequencies range, and relatively low thermal conductivity and thermal resistance values are obtained with these nonwovens (in the 0.020-0.025Wm(-1) K-1 range for flax: PVA nonwovens and in the 0.09-0.10Wm(-1) K-1 range for flax: PA6/CoPA nonwovens).     Symmetry energy of dense matter in holographic QCD

    We study the nuclear symmetry energy of dense matter using holographic QCD. To this end, we consider two flavor branes with equal quark masses in a D4/D6/D6 model. We find that at all densities the symmetry energy monotonically increases. At small densities, it exhibits a power law behavior with the density, Esymρ1/2E_{\rm sym} \sim \rho^{1/2}.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    Emulation of a complex global aerosol model to quantify sensitivity to uncertain parameters

    Sensitivity analysis of atmospheric models is necessary to identify the processes that lead to uncertainty in model predictions, to help understand model diversity through comparison of driving processes, and to prioritise research. Assessing the effect of parameter uncertainty in complex models is challenging and often limited by CPU constraints. Here we present a cost-effective application of variance-based sensitivity analysis to quantify the sensitivity of a 3-D global aerosol model to uncertain parameters. A Gaussian process emulator is used to estimate the model output across multi-dimensional parameter space, using information from a small number of model runs at points chosen using a Latin hypercube space-filling design. Gaussian process emulation is a Bayesian approach that uses information from the model runs along with some prior assumptions about the model behaviour to predict model output everywhere in the uncertainty space. We use the Gaussian process emulator to calculate the percentage of expected output variance explained by uncertainty in global aerosol model parameters and their interactions. To demonstrate the technique, we show examples of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) sensitivity to 8 model parameters in polluted and remote marine environments as a function of altitude. In the polluted environment 95 % of the variance of CCN concentration is described by uncertainty in the 8 parameters (excluding their interaction effects) and is dominated by the uncertainty in the sulphur emissions, which explains 80 % of the variance. However, in the remote region parameter interaction effects become important, accounting for up to 40 % of the total variance. Some parameters are shown to have a negligible individual effect but a substantial interaction effect. Such sensitivities would not be detected in the commonly used single parameter perturbation experiments, which would therefore underpredict total uncertainty. Gaussian process emulation is shown to be an efficient and useful technique for quantifying parameter sensitivity in complex global atmospheric models

    We study rigidly rotating strings in the near horizon geometry of the 1+1 dimensional intersection of two orthogonal stacks of NS5-branes, the so called I-brane background. We solve the equations of motion of the fundamental string action in the presence of two form NS-NS fluxes that the I-brane background supports and write down general form of conserved quantities. We find the spiky string solutions and present the dispersion relation among various charges in this background.     More three-point correlators of giant magnons with finite size

    In the framework of the semiclassical approach, we compute the normalized structure constants in three-point correlation functions, when two of the vertex operators correspond to heavy string states, while the third vertex corresponds to a light state. This is done for the case when the heavy string states are finite-size giant magnons with one or two angular momenta, and for two different choices of the light state, corresponding to dilaton operator and primary scalar operator. The relevant operators in the dual gauge theory are Tr(F_{\mu\nu}^2 Z^j+...) and Tr(Z^j). We first consider the case of AdS_5 x S^5 and N = 4 super Yang-Mills. Then we extend the obtained results to the gamma-deformed AdS_5 x S^5_\gamma, dual to N = 1 super Yang-Mills theory, arising as an exactly marginal deformation of N = 4 super Yang-Mills.Comment: 14 pages, no figure
