    Automatic interpretation of unordered point cloud data for UAV navigation in construction

The objective of this work is to develop a data processing system that can automatically generate waypoints for navigation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to inspect surfaces of structures like buildings and bridges. The input includes data recorded by two 2D laser scanners, orthogonally mounted on the UAV, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). To achieve the goal, algorithms are developed to process the data collected. They are separated into three major groups: (i) the data registration and filtering to generate a 3D model of the structure and control the density of point clouds for data completeness enhancement; (ii) the surface and obstacle detection to assist the UAV in monitoring tasks; and (iii) the waypoint generation to set the flight path. Experiments on different data sets show that the developed system is able to reconstruct a 3D point cloud of the structure, extract its surfaces and objects, and generate waypoints for the UAV to accomplish inspection tasks

    Fast or Slow: An Autonomous Speed Control Approach for UAV-assisted IoT Data Collection Networks

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been emerging as an effective solution for IoT data collection networks thanks to their outstanding flexibility, mobility, and low operation costs. However, due to the limited energy and uncertainty from the data collection process, speed control is one of the most important factors while optimizing the energy usage efficiency and performance for UAV collectors. This work aims to develop a novel autonomous speed control approach to address this issue. To that end, we first formulate the dynamic speed control task of a UAV as a Markov decision process taking into account its energy status and location. In this way, the Q-learning algorithm can be adopted to obtain the optimal speed control policy for the UAV. To further improve the system performance, we develop a highly-effective deep dueling double Q-learning algorithm utilizing outstanding features of the deep neural networks as well as advanced dueling architecture to quickly stabilize the learning process and obtain the optimal policy. Through simulations, we show that our proposed solution can achieve up to 40% greater performance, i.e., an average throughput of the system, compared with other conventional methods. Importantly, the simulation results also reveal significant impacts of UAV’s energy and charging time on the system performance

    Applying the AdS/CFT correspondence, the expansion of the heavy-quark potential of the N{\cal N} supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at large NcN_c is carried out to the sub-leading term in the large 't Hooft coupling at nonzero temperatures. The strong coupling corresponds to the semi-classical expansion of the string-sigma model, the gravity dual of the Wilson loop operator, with the sub-leading term expressed in terms of functional determinants of fluctuations.     AdS/QCD: The Relevance of the Geometry

    We investigate the relevance of the metric and of the geometry in five-dimensional models of hadrons. Generically, the metric does not affect strongly the results and even flat space agrees reasonably well with the data. Nevertheless, we observe a preference for a decreasing warp factor, for example AdS space. The Sakai-Sugimoto model reduces to one of these models and the level of agreement is similar to the one of flat space. We also consider the discrete version of the five-dimensional models, obtained by dimensional deconstruction. We find that essentially all the relevant features of "holographic" models of QCD can be reproduced with a simple 3-site model describing only the states below the cut-off of the theory.Comment: 25 pages + appendix. v2 minor changes and Refs. adde

    Detection and monitoring of cancers with biosensors in Vietnam

    Biosensors are able to provide fast, accurate and reliable detec-tions and monitoring of cancer cells, as well as to determine the effectiveness of anticancer chemotherapy agents in cancer treatments. These have attracted a great attention of research communities, especially in the capabilities of detecting the path-ogens, viruses and cancer cells in narrow scale that the conven-tional apparatus and techniques do not have. This paper pre-sents technologies and applications of biosensors for detections of cancer cells and related diseases, with the focus on the cur-rent research and technology development about biosensors in Vietnam, a typical developing country with a very high number of patients diagnosed with cancers in recent years, but having a very low cancer survival rate. The role of biosensors in early detections of diseases, cancer screening, diagnosis and treat-ment, is more and more important; especially it is estimated that by 2020, 60-70% new cases of cancers and nearly 70% of cancer deaths will be in economically disadvantaged countries. The paper is also aimed to open channels for the potential R&D collaborations with partners in Vietnam in the areas of innovative design and development of biosensors in particular and medical technology devices in general

    Critical solutions in topologically gauged N=8 CFTs in three dimensions

    In this paper we discuss some special (critical) background solutions that arise in topological gauged N=8{\mathcal N}=8 three-dimensional CFTs with SO(N) gauge group. These solutions solve the TMG equations (containing the parameters μ\mu and ll) for a certain set of values of μl\mu l obtained by varying the number of scalar fields with a VEV. Apart from Minkowski, chiral round AdS3AdS_3 and null-warped AdS3AdS_3 (or Schr\"odinger(z=2)) we identify also a more exotic solution recently found in TMGTMG by Ertl, Grumiller and Johansson. We also discuss the spectrum, symmetry breaking pattern and the supermultiplet structure in the various backgrounds and argue that some properties are due to their common origin in a conformal phase. Some of the scalar fields, including all higgsed ones, turn out to satisfy three-dimensional singleton field equations.     Study protocol of the LARK (TROG 17.03) clinical trial: a phase II trial investigating the dosimetric impact of Liver Ablative Radiotherapy using Kilovoltage intrafraction monitoring

    BACKGROUND: Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) is a non-invasive treatment which allows delivery of an ablative radiation dose with high accuracy and precision. SABR is an established treatment for both primary and secondary liver malignancies, and technological advances have improved its efficacy and safety. Respiratory motion management to reduce tumour motion and image guidance to achieve targeting accuracy are crucial elements of liver SABR. This phase II multi-institutional TROG 17.03 study, Liver Ablative Radiotherapy using Kilovoltage intrafraction monitoring (LARK), aims to investigate and assess the dosimetric impact of the KIM real-time image guidance technology. KIM utilises standard linear accelerator equipment and therefore has the potential to be a widely available real-time image guidance technology for liver SABR. METHODS: Forty-six patients with either hepatocellular carcinoma or oligometastatic disease to the liver suitable for and treated with SABR using Kilovoltage Intrafraction Monitoring (KIM) guidance will be included in the study. The dosimetric impact will be assessed by quantifying accumulated patient dose distribution with or without the KIM intervention. The patient treatment outcomes of local control, toxicity and quality of life will be measured. DISCUSSION: Liver SABR is a highly effective treatment, but precise dose delivery is challenging due to organ motion. Currently, there is a lack of widely available options for performing real-time tumour localisation to assist with accurate delivery of liver SABR. This study will provide an assessment of the impact of KIM as a potential solution for real-time image guidance in liver SABR.
