Petrogenesis and geochemical halos of the amphibolite facies, Lower Proterozoic, Kerry Road volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit, Loch Maree Group, Gairloch, NW Scotland
The Palaeoproterozoic Kerry Road deposit is one of the oldest examples of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) mineralization. This small VMS deposit (~500,000 tons grading at 1.2% Cu, 3.5% Zn) is hosted in amphibolite facies mafic-siliciclastic units of the c. 2.0 Ga Loch Maree Group, Scotland. Sulfide mineralization consists of pyrite and pyrrhotite with subordinate chalcopyrite and sphalerite, occurring in disseminated, vein and semi-massive to massive textures. The deposit was highly deformed and metamorphosed during the c. 1.8–1.7 Ga Laxfordian Orogeny. Textural relationships of deformed sulfide minerals, related to early Laxfordian deformation (D1/D2), indicate initial high pressure-low temperature (100 MPa, 150 °C) conditions before reaching peak amphibolite facies metamorphism, as evident from pyrrhotite crossing the brittle/ductile transition prior to chalcopyrite. Late Laxfordian deformation (D3/D4) is marked by local retrograde greenschist facies at low pressure and temperature (<1.2 MPa, <200 °C), recorded by late red sphalerite remobilization. δ34S values from all sulfide minerals have a homogeneous mean of 0.8 ± 0.7‰ (n = 21), consistent with interaction of hydrothermal fluids in the host oceanic basalt-island arc setting envisaged for deposition of the Loch Maree Group. Microprobe analyses of amphiboles record evidence of the original alteration halo associated with the Kerry Road deposit, with a systematic Mg- and Si- enrichment from ferrotschermakite (~150 m) to Mg-hornblende (~90 m) to actinolite (0 m) on approach to the VMS deposit. Furthermore, whole rock geochemistry records a progressive enrichment in Si, Cu, Co, and S, and depletion in Al, Ti, V, Cr, Y and Zr with proximity to the VMS system. These elemental trends, together with amphibole geochemistry, are potentially useful exploration vectors to VMS mineralization in the Loch Maree Group, and in similar highly deformed and metamorphosed terranes elsewhere.PostprintPeer reviewe
Gaussian quantum operator representation for bosons
We introduce a Gaussian quantum operator representation, using the most general possible multimode Gaussian operator basis. The representation unifies and substantially extends existing phase-space representations of density matrices for Bose systems and also includes generalized squeezed-state and thermal bases. It enables first-principles dynamical or equilibrium calculations in quantum many-body systems, with quantum uncertainties appearing as dynamical objects. Any quadratic Liouville equation for the density operator results in a purely deterministic time evolution. Any cubic or quartic master equation can be treated using stochastic methods
Bose-Einstein condensate collapse: a comparison between theory and experiment
We solve the Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically for the collapse induced
by a switch from positive to negative scattering lengths. We compare our
results with experiments performed at JILA with Bose-Einstein condensates of
Rb-85, in which the scattering length was controlled using a Feshbach
resonance. Building on previous theoretical work we identify quantitative
differences between the predictions of mean-field theory and the results of the
experiments. Besides the previously reported difference between the predicted
and observed critical atom number for collapse, we also find that the predicted
collapse times systematically exceed those observed experimentally. Quantum
field effects, such as fragmentation, that might account for these
discrepancies are discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
Exact quantum phase model for mesoscopic Josephson junctions
Starting from the two-mode Bose-Hubbard model, we derive an exact version of the standard Mathieu equation governing the wave function of a Josephson junction. For a finite number of particles N, we find an additional cos 2 phi term in the potential. We also find that the inner product in this representation is nonlocal in phi. Our model exhibits phenomena, such as pi oscillations, which are not found in the standard phase model, but have been predicted from Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field theory
Entanglement of two-mode Bose-Einstein condensates
We investigate the entaglement characteristics of two general bimodal
Bose-Einstein condensates - a pair of tunnel-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates
and the atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate. We argue that the entanglement
is only physically meaningful if the system is viewed as a bipartite system,
where the subsystems are the two modes. The indistinguishibility of the
particles in the condensate means that the atomic constituents are physically
inaccessible and thus the degree of entanglement between individual particles,
unlike the entanglement between the modes, is not experimentally relevant so
long as the particles remain in the condensed state. We calculate the
entanglement between the modes for the exact ground state of the two bimodal
condensates and consider the dynamics of the entanglement in the tunnel-coupled
case.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Physical Review A, to be presented

Quantum Corrections to Dilute Bose Liquids
It was recently shown (A. Bulgac. Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 89}, 050402 (2002))
that an entirely new class of quantum liquids with widely tunable properties
could be manufactured from bosons (boselets), fermions (fermilets) and their
mixtures (ferbolets) by controlling their interaction properties by the means
of a Feshbach resonance. We extend the previous mean--field analysis of these
quantum liquids by computing the lowest order quantum corrections to the ground
state energy and the depletion of the Bose--Einstein condensate and by
estimating higher order corrections as well. We show that the quantum
corrections are relatively small and controlled by the diluteness parameter
, even though strictly speaking in this case there is no
low density expansion.Comment: final published version, typos corrected, updated references and

Cost-Effectiveness of Health Care Interventions to Address Intimate Partner Violence: What Do We Know and What Else Should We Look for?
Intimate partner violence (IPV) creates a substantial burden of disease and significant costs to families, communities, and governments. Building the evidence for effective interventions to reduce violence and its sequelae requires increased use of economic evaluation to inform policy through the analysis of costs and potential savings of interventions. The authors review existing economic evaluations and present case studies of current research from the United Kingdom and Australia to illustrate the strengths and limitations of two approaches to generating economic evidence: economic evaluation alongside randomized controlled trials and economic modeling. Economic evaluation should always be considered in the design of IPV intervention research
Chaos in a double driven dissipative nonlinear oscillator
We propose an anharmonic oscillator driven by two periodic forces of
different frequencies as a new time-dependent model for investigating quantum
dissipative chaos. Our analysis is done in the frame of statistical ensemble of
quantum trajectories in quantum state diffusion approach. Quantum dynamical
manifestation of chaotic behavior, including the emergence of chaos, properties
of strange attractors, and quantum entanglement are studied by numerical
simulation of ensemble averaged Wigner function and von Neumann entropy.Comment: 9 pages, 18 figure
