Learning from the Stones: A \u3cem\u3eGo\u3c/em\u3e Approach to Mastering China\u27s Strategic Concept, \u3cem\u3eShi\u3c/em\u3e
To help with the process of identifying those new and untested strategic concepts that merit further examination, the Strategic Studies Institute is publishing a special series called Advancing Strategic Thought. This provides a venue--a safe haven--for creative, innovative, and experimental thinking about national security policy and military strategy. In this monograph, the author uses the ancient game of Go as a metaphor for the Chinese approach to strategy. He shows that this is very different than the linear method that underlies American strategy. By better understanding Go, he argues, American strategies could better understand Chinese strategy.https://press.armywarcollege.edu/monographs/1770/thumbnail.jp
SCHOOL PRINCIPAL LEADERSHIP STYLES AND TEACHERS ORGANIZATIONAL COMMITMENT. A RESEARCH AGENDA
This research served the intention of examining the relationship between perceptions of principal leadership styles and teachers’ organizational commitment between performing and underperforming schools as well as to identify the leaders’ gender as a moderating variable. Other influential factors including teacher age, position tenure, years of experiences, religion and educational level as suggested by previous researches are being investigated in this study to further clarify this relationship. Three domains of leadership styles namely Transformational, Transactional and Nurturant were apply. The former and later types of leadership were chosen was based on the concept of “Caring Societal” which the MOE trying to instill in our educational scenario. Teachers’ commitment was examined using questionnaires developed by Meyer and Allen’s (1997). Gender of principals is added to serve as a moderating effect on this relationship which is basically based on this pre-dominant Muslim society where the preferably leadership gender is still maleAffective (AC), Continuance (CC), Normative (NC), Transformational, Transactional, Nurturant
Lexical Item Learning Via Multimedia Annotations.
The ubiquitous computers with multimedia technology serve as an attractive learning tool because they are able to deliver integrated, different source media as well as access these media easily and instantaneously. Thus, to take advantage of these qualities to help language learners, multimedia annotations of lexical items, which present information of the items via printed text, audio mode, still pictures and animation, are utilized. This
paper reports on the effects of integrating multimedia annotations in expository texts on the learning of lexical items by 109 Science students from Universiti Sains Malaysia. In this within-subjects design study, the participants read expository texts on the computer
Sensitivity analysis of permeability parameters of bovine nucleus pulposus obtained through inverse fitting of the nonlinear biphasic equation : effect of sampling strategy
Permeability controls the fluid flow into and out of soft tissue, and plays an important role in maintaining the health status of such tissue. Accurate determination of the parameters that define permeability is important for the interpretation of models that incorporate such processes. This paper describes the determination of strain-dependent permeability parameters from the nonlinear biphasic equation from experimental data of different sampling frequencies using the Nelder–Mead simplex method. The ability of this method to determine the global optimum was assessed by constructing the whole manifold arising from possible parameter combinations. Many parameter combinations yielded similar fits with the Nelder–Mead algorithm able to identify the global maximum within the resolution of the manifold. Furthermore, the sampling strategy affected the optimum values of the permeability parameters. Therefore, permeability parameter estimations arising from inverse methods should be utilised with the knowledge that they come with large confidence intervals

The Core-Periphery Structure of Destination Image: An Exploration via Social Network Analysis
The core-periphery structure (C/PS) of destination image, recently proposed as an alternative image model, has scarcely been tested. Presumably, the lack of appropriate techniques plays an important role in the limited theory testing efforts. Besides, it remains unclear how people retrieve destination image from memory, when we place destination image into a C-P model. Understanding the structure of destination image could reveal insights into image retrieval. This research aims to introduce social network analysis as a new approach to test the C/PS of destination image, and identify the retrieving paths of destination image adopted by potential tourists. Image descriptions about the Shanghai Disney Resort (SHDR) were collected from 1,000 respondents, and the data was analyzed via social network techniques. Results show that the image of SHDR has both single and multiple C/PSs, and image retrieval of respondents either follows a core-to-periphery path or fluctuates between two neighboring levels of core/periphery
Membership on Editorial Boards and Rankings of Schools with International Business Orientation
Using four-year data (1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002), we have provided a ranking of schools with international business (IB) orientation based on the membership on editorial boards of 30 leading international business journals. Participation on editorial boards of quality journals is highly selective, and should provide a quality indication of the schools. Both quality unadjusted and adjusted board membership based ranking are calculated in this study. Several interesting findings are worth noting. First, U.S. schools play a significant leadership role among the leading IB programs. Second, the findings of this study also show the major contribution of non-U.S. schools, which confirm the importance of the global nature of the IB discipline. Third, the top-ranked schools share a number of characteristics. Finally, the correlation among different ranking criteria can be low, particularly for the top-ranked schools, suggesting that care should be exercised in interpreting school ranking
Characterization of volatile organic compounds at a roadside environment in Hong Kong: An investigation of influences after air pollution control strategies
Vehicular emission is one of the important anthropogenic pollution sources for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Four characterization campaigns were conducted at a representative urban roadside environment in Hong Kong between May 2011 and February 2012. Carbon monoxide (CO) and VOCs including methane (CH4), non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs), halocarbons, and alkyl nitrates were quantified. Both mixing ratios and compositions of the target VOCs show ignorable seasonal variations. Except CO, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tracers of propane, i-butane and n-butane are the three most abundant VOCs, which increased significantly as compared with the data measured at the same location in 2003. Meanwhile, the mixing ratios of diesel- and gasoline tracers such as ethyne, alkenes, aromatics, halogenated, and nitrated hydrocarbons decreased by at least of 37%. The application of advanced multivariate receptor modeling technique of positive matrix factorization (PMF) evidenced that the LPG fuel consumption is the largest pollution source, accounting for 60 ± 5% of the total quantified VOCs at the roadside location. The sum of ozone formation potential (OFP) for the target VOCs was 300.9 μg-O3 m-3, which was 47% lower than the value of 567.3 μg-O3 m-3 measured in 2003. The utilization of LPG as fuel in public transport (i.e., taxis and mini-buses) contributed 51% of the sum of OFP, significantly higher than the contributions from gasoline- (16%) and diesel-fueled (12%) engine emissions. Our results demonstrated the effectiveness of the switch from diesel to LPG-fueled engine for taxis and mini-buses implemented by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government between the recent ten years, in additional to the execution of substitution to LPG-fueled engine and restrictions of the vehicular emissions in compliance with the updated European emission standards
