The word ‘Rasa Shastra’ comprises of two words: ‘Rasa’ and ‘Shastra.’ Rasa stands for ‘Mercury’ while Shastra stands for ‘Science.’ Therefore ‘Rasa Shastra’ literally stands for ‘Science of Mercury’ However this specialised branch of Ayurveda has a broad range of study. It deals with all the metals, minerals, mercury and other substances known as Rasa Dravayas. Swarna vanga is prepared as per reference of Rasa Tarangini Vanga (Tin), Parada (Mercury), Gandhak (Sulphur), Navasadara (Ammonium Chloride) and Kalmi Shora (Potassium Nitrate). Swarna Vanga is a type of Kupipakwa Rasayanas, indicated mainly in diseases such as Madhumeha (diabetes mellitus), Swasa (respiratory disorders), Pradara (menorrhagia), and as a Vrishya (aphrodisiac) and this is the product of complex chemical processes in which preparation of Kajjali and heating pattern plays most important role

Rasashastra deals with the Rasa Aushadhis, the drugs of metallic and mineral origin. Mercury is used in most of the Rasaaushadhis. The toxicity of Mineral and metallic preparations are reduced to such an extent by various procedures of Shodhana, Marana etc. that Mercury converts its inherent property of toxicity into medicinal property. Rasa Aushadhis works quickly on the body because due to their small particle size, their absorption starts from the oral mucosa itself. The action of drugs depends largely upon the Anupana i.e. the vehicle for the drug. Rasacharayas have mentioned various Rasa preparations like Bhasmas, Parpati, Pottali, Manduras, Karpooras etc. along with their doses, dose schedule and Anupana / Sahapana etc. The principles of Rasaaushadhis when correlated in modern era are found to be scientifically accurate. We may say that Rasacharyas had already mastered the science of nanotechnology, purification, action of metabolic catalysts, biotransformation and preservation of medicines. The Ayurvedic drugs can be harmful for our body when not administered in proper dosage as per mentioned in classic literatures

In Rasashastra classical books different authors have given different opinions regarding classification of Swarnamakshika. Some considered it as Saklamyaghan (cures all diseases) and Prana of Parada. (Inevitable in various mercurial operations). Hence it was placed under Maharasavarga. Swarnamakshika is grouped under Updhatu of Swarna and is composed of Copper, Iron and Sulphur. Swarnamakshika is considered as potent Rasayana drug and is indicated in diseases like Pandu, Anidra, Apasmara etc. Many Shodhana and Marana procedures have been explained for Swarnamakshika in different classics. A standard Swarnamakshika is prepared conveniently by using Nimbuka Swarasa as Shodhana and Marana media. Marana was done by using Nimbuka Swarasa until Bhasmasiddi Lakshanas found and it took 10 Puta till it attained reddish brown colour. In order to minimize the variability of manufactured product, standardization of Bhasma is must. Swarnamakshika Shodhana procedures remove toxicity from the minerals, metals gems, and poisons and make them safe for consumption; on the other hand if the medicines contain toxicity or any form of impurities, it may cause different health hazards
