    Get PDF
The goal of this study is to analyze the factors affecting violent crime rates in the US. It is hypothesized that an increase in the gun ownership rate tends to increase violent crimes in the US. It is hypothesized that urban areas in the US tend to have more violent crimes than rural areas. An OLS regression model is formulated using cross-sectional data set across 50 states and the District of Columbia for the year 2019. The endogenous variable is the violent crime rates per 100,000 inhabitants across 50 states and the District of Columbia. The independent variables used in the OLS regression model are population density per square mile, unemployment rate, percentage of the population living in poverty, and gun ownership rate. The four exogenous variables that are found to be statistically significant are gun ownership, unemployment rate, population density per square mile, and percentage of population living in property. An attempt is also made to formulate strategies that would help in reducing violent crime rates in the US

The goal of this paper is to analyze the impact of international student enrollments on the US real gross domestic product. It is hypothesized that an increase in international student enrollment tends to have a positive impact on US real gross domestic product. It is also hypothesized that an increase in economic impact of international students has a positive impact on the US real gross domestic product. A regression model is formulated that consists of percentage increase in real gross domestic product (economic growth rate) as the dependent variable. The independent variables used in the regression model are annual percentage increase in international student enrollments in the US and the annual percentage increase in economic impact of the international students in the US. Data is collected from 2009 to 2015 from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and NAFSA.  It is important to analyze the rationale as to why highly skilled immigration is vital for promotion of entrepreneurship and innovation in the US economy. The current administration is trying to undermine the positive impact of highly skilled immigration on the US economy. The issue is critically important in the prevailing political climate in the US economy. An attempt is also made to formulate strategies that would help in mitigating negative outcomes such as potential declines in revenues for US universities as well as decline in research and grant funding that would arise due to decrease in international student enrolments

In this period scholars were associated with the portrayal of unrefined and crude factors of warfare which were, directly and indirectly, related to the people of that time. His plays display various levels of human existence. There is an exploration of mental, social, financial, human relationship, and the existential methodology of existence with ludicrousness in his plays. Pinter’s relationship is with the real elements of human existence and activities. He denies the idea of realism in his plays and says that “If you press me for a definition. I would say that what goes on in my plays is realistic, but what I’m doing is not realism” (The Essential Pinter, 11). He always tried to depict concrete and particular idea in his plays through concrete characters. He never wrote his plays for any kind of abstract idea. Question of Woman Identity in the Characters of Anita Desai with a Special Emphasis on In Custody

Abstract: Patriarchy is the name of a global effect of domination made possible by a myriad of power relations at the micro-level of society. With this knowledge in mind, Anita Desai seems to have adopted a skeptical stance towards the modern discourses on emancipation that have a claim to universal truth and to represent the Archimedean leverage point from which the society can be moved. Rather she has made an attempt at focusing on the power relations at the micro-level of society without giving privilege to a general theory and a single locus of resistance to Patriarchy. In her fiction, she has resurrected the subjugated knowledge she, like a genealogist, has located many discontinuous individual women’s struggles against different forms of power in different patriarchal societies. These struggles are mainly organized from two post-colonial strategic positions: appropriation and abrogation. As a corollary of this, her female protagonists, equipped with oppositional consciousness and sometimes endowed with a vision of an alternative world, are found to selectively either appropriate or abrogate different social institutions and cultural practices to serve their personal ends

    Get PDF
Within the parameters of feminist doctrine, one key issue that (Marriage as an institution) has ever been addressed by feminists is the institution of marriage. The pioneers of feminist literary theory, beginning from Virginia Woolf, Simon de Beavoir, Ann Dally, Helen Cixous, Luce Irigaray, Nancy Chodorow and Alice Walker have all questioned traditional representations of the woman in marriage and focused on the shaping of woman’s identity in marriage. Feminist ideals of woman’s empowerment and eradication of gender discriminations have become deeply entrenched in India since the recent past. In the field of Indian English fiction, age old patriarchal ethos have been questioned and often defied by women writers. Significantly enough in the Indian English novel by women writers, it is through the representation and (de) scription of the institution of marriage that the discourses of protest find expression. These novels centre round the emergence of the new woman from the margin to the centre, from role to individuality, from woman as a stereotypical category as a woman as an individual capable of authenticity of feeling and belief. The Indian woman is essentially different from her western counterpart. In the Indian context neither the writer nor her character can adopt western modes of protest and defiance. Marriage, in India, is a particularly complex space through which multifaceted force operate. This paper explores the various ways of feminist assertion and protest as projected through the dynamics and problematic of the social institution of marriage in case of Indian women

    Get PDF
The prevalence of diabetes is rapidly increasing globally in epidemic proportions, but many people with diabetes remain undiagnosed or untreated. In view of this escalating prevalence, the World Health Organization (WHO) has launched the Global Diabetes Compact (GDC) campaign to improve the diagnosis and management of people with diabetes. To this end, a set of diabetes coverage targets, focusing on 80% of people living with diabetes, to be achieved by the year 2030, were defined at the 75th World Health Assembly for the first time in May this year. These targets aim to achieve not just glycemic control, but also blood pressure and lipid management at all levels of the health care system. India has the second largest number of people with diabetes in the globe. In this article, we have proposed the concept of “glycemic guardianship”, which means activities carried out by the health care team and the health care system in partnership with the patient to ensure optimal care of diabetes. Recognizing and acknowledging our role as “glycemic guardians” of the nation will automatically pave the way to realize the targets set by the GDC
