    Development of single-cell protectors for sealed silver-zinc cells

    Three design approaches to cell-level protection were developed, fabricated, and tested. These systems are referred to as the single-cell protector (SCP), multiplexed-cell protector(MCP). To evaluate the systems 18-cell battery packs without cell level control were subjected to cycle life test. A total of five batteries were subjected to simulate synchronous orbit cycling at 40% depth of discharge at 22C. Batteries without cell-level protection failed between 345 and 255 cycles. Cell failure in the cell level protected batteries occurred between 412 and 540. It was determined that the cell-level monitoring and protection is necessary to attain the long cycle life of a AgZn battery. The best method of providing control and protection of the AgZn cells depends on the specific application and capability of the user

    A single cell protector (SCP) assembly capable of protecting a single silver-zinc (Ag Zn) battery cell was designed, fabricated, and tested. The SCP provides cell-level protection against overcharge and overdischarge by a bypass circuit. The bypass circuit consists of a magnetic-latching relay that is controlled by the high and low-voltage limit comparators. Although designed specifically for secondary Ag-Zn cells, the SCP is flexible enough to be adapted to other rechargeable cells. Eighteen SCPs were used in life testing of an 18-cell battery. The cells were sealed Ag-Zn system with inorganic separators. For comparison, another 18-cell battery was subjected to identical life test conditions, but with battery-level protection rather than cell-level. An alternative approach to the SCP design in the form of a microprocessor-based system was conceptually designed. The comparison of SCP and microprocessor approaches is also presented and a preferred approach for Ag-Zn battery protection is discussed

    The colour-magnitude relations of ClJ1226.9+3332, a massive cluster of galaxies at z=0.89

    (Abridged) The colour-magnitude relations of one of the most massive, high redshift clusters of galaxies known have been studied. Photometry has been measured in the V, R, I, z, F606W, F814W, J and K bands to a depth of K*+2.5 and spectroscopy confirms 27 K band selected cluster members. The V-K colours are equivalent to a rest-frame colour of ~2700A-J, and provide a very sensitive measure of star-formation activity. HST ACS imaging has been used to morphologically classify the galaxies. The cluster has a low early-type fraction compared to nearby clusters, with only 33% of the cluster members having types E or S0. The early-type member galaxies form a clear red-sequence in all colours. The scatter and slope of the relations show no evolution compared to the equivalent Coma cluster relations, suggesting the stellar populations are already very old. The normalisation of the relations has been compared to models based on synthetic stellar populations, and are most consistent with stellar populations forming at z>3. Some late-type galaxies were found to lie on the red-sequence, suggesting that they have very similar stellar populations to the early-types. These results present a picture of a cluster in which the early-type galaxies are all old, but in which there must be future morphological transformation of galaxies to match the early-type fraction of nearby clusters. In order to preserve the tight colour-magnitude relation of early-types seen in nearby clusters, the late-type galaxies must transform their colours, through the cessation of star-formation, before the morphological transformation occurs.     Communicating in Complex Situations: A Normative Approach to HIV-Related Talk Among Parents Who Are HIV+

    Parents with HIV/AIDS are confronted with unique challenges when discussing HIV-related information with their children. Strategies for navigating these challenges effectively have not been systematically examined. In this study, we conducted in-depth interviews with 76 parents with HIV/AIDS who had children ages 10–18 years. Guided by O\u27Keefe and Delia\u27s definition of a complex communication situation and Goldsmith\u27s normative approach to interpersonal communication, we examined parents’ goals for discussing HIV-related information, factors that made conversations challenging, and instances where these conversational purposes conflicted with one another. Our data reveal the following parent–adolescent communication predicaments: relaying safety information about HIV while minimizing child anxiety, modeling open family communication without damaging one\u27s parental identity, and balancing parent–child relational needs amid living with an unpredictable health condition. Parents also described a variety of strategies for mitigating challenges when discussing HIV-related topics. Strategies parents perceived as effective included reframing HIV as a chronic, manageable illness; keeping talk educational; and embedding HIV-related topics within more general conversations. The theoretical and practical applications of these findings are discussed with regard to their relevance to health communication scholars and HIV care professionals

    A new species of stalked crinoid (Echinodermata) of possible Late Silurian age from central Newfoundland

    A new fossil locality within a sequence previously assigned to the Middle Ordovician Baie D'Espoir Group in south-central Newfoundland contains fragmented crinoid columnals and brachiopods. Distinctive, pentastellate crinoid columnals, similar to those assigned to the monobathrid camerate Hexacrinites Austin and Austin by Russian authors, are named Hexacrinites? Pentastellatus n. sp. Nodal(?) columnals of this species have a circular, depressed articular facet, with a conical to bowl-like crenularium, a depressed, circular areola, a raised perilumen and a short, slender axial canal of pentagonal section. The oldest Hexacrinites sensu stricto are Late Silurian, suggesting that the fossiliferous strata have been incorrectly assigned to the Ordovician. Cross-sections of brachiopods from the same locality include an example that resembles several Early Silurian to Late Devonian pentameroid genera including Brooksina Kirk, 1922. Correlation with Late Silurian, bivalve-bearing strata SO km to the northeast would indicate that a major unconformity may occur above the fossiliferous Early and Middle Ordovician strata and the Early Ordovician ophiolite complexes. RÉSUMÉ Un nouvel emplacement de fossiles à I'intérieur d'une sequence auparavant attribute au groupe de l'Ordovicien moyen de Baie d'Espoir dans le centre-sud de Terre-Neuve renferme des fragments de columnales et de brachiopodes de crinoldes. Des columnales de crinoldes pentaétoilées caractéristiqucs, semblables à celles attributées à l’Hexacrinites Austin and Austin à loges monobathrides par des auteurs russes, sont baptisées nouvelle espèce pentastellatus d'Hexacrinites?. Les columnales nodales(?) de cette espèce sont pourvues d'une facette articulaire renfoncée et circulaire munie d'un crenularium allant de conique à bombé, d'une aréole circulaire renfoncie, d'un périlumen surélevé et d'un canal axial mince et court de section pentagonalc. Les plus anciens Hexacrinites, au sens strict, remontent au Silurien supérieur, ce qui permet de supposer qu'on a incorrectement attribué la strate fossilifère à l'Ordovicien. Des iéchantillons représentatifs de brachiopodes du même emplacement comprennent un exemple qui ressemble à plusieurs genres de pentaméroides datant du Silurien inférieur au Dévonien supérieur, notamment le Brooksina Kirk, 1922. Leur corrélation avec des strates renfermant des bivalves du Silurien supérieur à 50 km au nord-cst signale qu'une discordance importantc pourrait se présenter au-dessus des strates fossiliferes de l'Ordovicien inférieur ou moyen de même que des complexes d'ophiolites de l'Ordovicien inférieur.     The evolution of climate change guidance for fluvial flood risk management in England

    Floods are one of the biggest natural hazards to society, and there is increasing concern about the potential impacts of climate change on flood occurrence and magnitude. Furthermore, flood risk is likely to increase in the future not just through increased flood occurrence, but also through socio-economic changes, such as increasing population. The extent to which adaptation measures can offset this increased risk will depend on the level of future climate change, but there exists an urgent need for information on the potential impacts of climate change on floods, so that these can be accounted for by flood management authorities and local planners aiming to reduce flood risk. Agencies across the UK have been pro-active in providing such guidance for many years and in refining it as the science of climate change and hydrological impacts has developed. The history of this guidance for fluvial flood risk in England is presented and discussed here, including the recent adoption of a regional risk-based approach. Such an approach could be developed and applied to flood risk management in other countries, and to other sectors affected by climate change

    Large-Scale Aspects and Temporal Evolution of Pulsating Aurora

    Pulsating aurora is a common phenomenon generally believed to occur mainly in the aftermath of a, substorm, where dim long-period pulsating patches appear. The study determines the temporal and spatial evolution of pulsating events using two THEN IIIS ASI stations, at Gillam (66.18 mlat, 332.78 mlon, magnetic midnight at 0634 UT) and Fort Smith, (67.38 mlat, 306.64 mlon, magnetic midnight at, 0806 UT) along roughly the same invariant latitude. Parameters have been calculated from a database of 74 pulsating aurora events from 119 days of good optical data within the period from September 2007 through March 2008 as identified with the Gillam camera. It is shown that the source region of pulsating aurora drifts or expands eastward, away from magnetic midnight, for pre-midnight onsets and that the spatial evolution is more complicated for post midnight onsets, which has implications for the source mechanism. The most probable duration of a pulsating aurora event is roughly 1.5 hours while the distribution of possible event durations includes many long (several hours) events. This may suggest that pulsating aurora is not strictly a substorm recovery phase phenomenon but rather a persistent, long-lived phenomenon that may be temporarily disrupted by auroral substorms. Observations from the Gillam station show that in fact, pulsating aurora is quite common with the occurrence rate increasing to around 60% for morning hours, with 6910 of pulsating aurora onsets occurring after substorm breakup

    ESO 381-47, an early-type galaxy with extended HI and a star forming ring

    ESO 381-47 is an early type galaxy with an extended HI disk. GALEX and very deep optical images reveal a distinct stellar ring far outside the optical body with a diameter of ~30 kpc, which has undergone recent star formation at 1.8 x 10^-4 Msun/yr/kpc^-2, consistent with other new results which detect low level star formation below the traditional Kennicutt relation in the outer parts of spiral galaxies. The morphology of this galaxy resembles the recently identified class of ultraviolet objects called extended ultraviolet disks, or XUV-disks. New HI observations of this galaxy taken at the ATCA and in the CnB array at the VLA show that the cold gas lies in an extended (diameter ~90 kpc) ring around the central S0 galaxy. The HI data cube can be well modeled by a warped ring. The faint ionized gas in the inner parts of the galaxy is kinematically decoupled from the stars and instead appears to exhibit velocities consistent with the rotation of the HI ring at larger radius. The peak of the stellar ring, as seen in the optical and UV, is slightly displaced to the inside relative to the peak of the HI ring. We discuss the manner in which this offset could be caused by the propagation of a radial density wave through an existing stellar disk, perhaps triggered by a galaxy collision at the center of the disk, or possibly due to a spiral density wave set up at early times in a disk too hot to form a stellar bar. Gas accretion and resonance effects due to a bar which has since dissolved are also considered to explain the presence of the star forming ring seen in the GALEX and deep optical data.Comment: 48 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables.
