Assessing the damming effects on runoff using a multiple linear regression model: A case study of the Manwan Dam on the Lancang River
AbstractThe Lancang River in Yunnan Province, with a length of 1170km and a 1780-m drop from northwest to southeast, is the most controversial river in southwest China because 14 cascade hydropower stations have been planned on the main waterway. The Manwan Dam, the first of the 14 dams, began operating in 1993, and the associated downstream runoff may have been affected by its construction. To assess this impact, we first investigated the relationships between monthly runoff observed from the Gajiu station and meteorological data obtained from four meteorological gauging stations with a time-lag of 0-3 months over the pre-dam period (1957-2000). Second, we established and validated a multiple linear regression equation employing monthly meteorological and hydrological data during the pre-dam period. Finally, we simulated the monthly runoff after dam construction (1993-2000) using the established equations and assessed the impact of dam construction on runoff by comparing the observed actual monthly runoff with the simulated monthly runoff. Our results suggested a very high hydro-meteorological correlation for the pre-dam period, which opened up the possibility of runoff forecasting. Further, the multiple linear regression equation displayed good simulation performance as coefficient of determination (R2) and the Nash-Suttcliffe coefficient (NS) reached 0.84 and 0.82 respectively. By comparing the observed and the predicted monthly runoff, we found that construction of the Manwan Dam caused a visible disturbance on monthly runoff that, with the disturbance value, displayed a multi-peak fluctuation of up-down variation in the annual hydrologic regime circl

Impacts of environmental factors and human disturbance on composition of roadside vegetation in Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve of Southwest China
AbstractVegetation-disturbance-environment relationships in Xishuangbanna Nature Reserve (XNR) was examined using multivariate analysis to understand the impacts of environmental factors and human disturbance on vegetation along the highway corridor. The results show that native forests were the best habitat for protected/endangered species and native species. The exotic plants Eupatorium odoratum and Eupatorium adenophora were found primarily in secondary forests and their presence was positively associated with altitude and soil potassium concentrations. The distribution of two protected plants, Phoebe nanmu and Pometia tomentosa, was negatively associated with road disturbance. Understanding the complex effects of environmental factors and human disturbance is key for developing conservation and restoration strategies for roadside plant ecosystems
Spin polarized tunneling in ferromagnet/unconventional superconductor junctions
We study tunneling in ferromagnet/unconventional superconductor (F/S)
junctions. We include the effects of spin polarization, interfacial resistance,
and Fermi wavevector mismatch (FWM) between the F and S regions. Andreev
reflection (AR) at the F/S interface, governing tunneling at low bias voltage,
is strongly modified by these parameters. The conductance exhibits a very wide

A Simulation Study on the Effect of Cavity Shapes on the Penetration of Linear Shaped Charges with Curved Liners
The finite element models of curved-liner shaped charges penetrating aluminum-alloy thin plates were constructed with the ANSYS/LS-DYNA software to analyze the effect of cavity shapes on the charge penetration with curved liners. The cavity height, radius, and spatial dimensions were numerically simulated. Simulation results indicate that these properties are important factors in determining the penetration of curved-liner charges. The penetration depth exhibits an initial increase followed by a decrease with the fixed cavity radius. When the cavity height is fixed, the penetration depth decreases with the cavity radius. When the cavity is semicircular, the penetration depth first increases and then decreases with the cavity radius and height.Построены конечноэлементные модели кумулятивных зарядов со сложнопрофильной облицовкой, проникающих через тонкие пластины из алюминиевого сплава. Neutrino Oscillations and Collider Test of the R-parity Violating Minimal Supergravity Model
We study the R-parity violating minimal supergravity models accounting for
the observed neutrino masses and mixing, which can be tested in future collider
experiments. The bi-large mixing can be explained by allowing five dominant
tri-linear couplings and . The desired ratio
of the atmospheric and solar neutrino mass-squared differences can be obtained
in a very limited parameter space where the tree-level contribution is tuned to
be suppressed. In this allowed region, we quantify the correlation between the
three neutrino mixing angles and the tri-linear R-parity violating couplings.
Qualitatively, the relations , and are required by the large
atmospheric neutrino mixing angle and the small angle
, and the large solar neutrino mixing angle ,
respectively. Such a prediction on the couplings can be tested in the next
linear colliders by observing the branching ratios of the lightest
supersymmetric particle (LSP). For the stau or the neutralino LSP, the ratio
can be measured
by establishing or , respectively. The
information on the couplings can be drawn by measuring if the neutralino LSP is heavier than the top

Andreev Reflection in Ferromagnet/Superconductor/Ferromagnet Double Junction Systems
We present a theory of Andreev reflection in a
ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet double junction system. The spin
polarized quasiparticles penetrate to the superconductor in the range of
penetration depth from the interface by the Andreev reflection. When the
thickness of the superconductor is comparable to or smaller than the
penetration depth, the spin polarized quasiparticles pass through the
superconductor and therefore the electric current depends on the relative
orientation of magnetizations of the ferromagnets. The dependences of the
magnetoresistance on the thickness of the superconductor, temperature, the
exchange field of the ferromagnets and the height of the interfacial barriers

Potassium chloride elicits enhancement of bilobalide and Ginkgolides production by Ginkgo biloba cell cultures
This study investigated the ability of potassium chloride (KCl) to elicit the production of bilobalide (BB), ginkgolide A (GA) and ginkgolide B (GB) by Ginkgo biloba cell suspension cultures. The salt stress by KCl treatments increased production of BB, GA and GB in both suspended cells and cultured medium. Especially, treatment of KCl 800 mM of highest concentration was stimulated emission into cultured medium BB, GA and GB compounds accumulated in cells. Although KCl 800 mM severely inhibited cells growth, the maximum content of GA and GB in cells was obtained in the treatment of KCl 800 mM, which was 1.9 and 4.0 times higher than the control. These results thus suggest that salt stress can afford enhanced production of secondary metabolites by plant cell cultures
Metal-insulator transition and charge ordering in the extended Hubbard model at one-quarter filling
We study with exact diagonalization the zero temperature properties of the
quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on a square lattice. We find that
increasing the ratio of the intersite Coulomb repulsion, , to the band width
drives the system from a metal to a charge ordered insulator. The evolution of
the optical conductivity spectrum with increasing is compared to the
observed optical conductivity of several layered molecular crystals with the

Spin-Polarized Transport Across an LaSrMnO/YBaCuO Interface: Role of Andreev Bound States
Transport across an
LaSr_{3}/YBa_{3}_{7}_{3}$/YBCO and Ag/YBCO. In all cases, YBCO is used as bottom layer to
eliminate the channel resistance and to minimize thermal effects. The observed
differential conductance re ects the role of Andreev bound states in a-b
planes, and brings out for the first time the suppression of such states by the
spin-polarized transport across the interface. The theoretical analysis of the
measured data reveals decay of the spin polarization near the LSMO surface with
