    The C4 Clustering Algorithm: Clusters of Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

    We present the "C4 Cluster Catalog", a new sample of 748 clusters of galaxies identified in the spectroscopic sample of the Second Data Release (DR2) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The C4 cluster--finding algorithm identifies clusters as overdensities in a seven-dimensional position and color space, thus minimizing projection effects which plagued previous optical clusters selection. The present C4 catalog covers ~2600 square degrees of sky with groups containing 10 members to massive clusters having over 200 cluster members with redshifts. We provide cluster properties like sky location, mean redshift, galaxy membership, summed r--band optical luminosity (L_r), velocity dispersion, and measures of substructure. We use new mock galaxy catalogs to investigate the sensitivity to the various algorithm parameters, as well as to quantify purity and completeness. These mock catalogs indicate that the C4 catalog is ~90% complete and 95% pure above M_200 = 1x10^14 solar masses and within 0.03 <=z <= 0.12. The C4 algorithm finds 98% of X-ray identified clusters and 90% of Abell clusters within 0.03 <= z <= 0.12. We show that the L_r of a cluster is a more robust estimator of the halo mass (M_200) than the line-of-sight velocity dispersion or the richness of the cluster. L_r.     Co-Operative Biofilm Interactions between Aspergillus fumigatus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa through Secreted Galactosaminogalactan Exopolysaccharide

    The mold Aspergillus fumigatus and bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa form biofilms in the airways of individuals with cystic fibrosis. Biofilm formation by A. fumigatus depends on the self-produced cationic exopolysaccharide galactosaminogalactan (GAG), while P. aeruginosa biofilms can contain the cationic exopolysaccharide Pel. GAG and Pel are rendered cationic by deacetylation mediated by either the secreted deacetylase Agd3 (A. fumigatus) or the periplasmic deacetylase PelA (P. aeruginosa). Given the similarities between these polymers, the potential for biofilm interactions between these organisms were investigated. P. aeruginosa were observed to adhere to A. fumigatus hyphae in a GAG-dependent manner and to GAG-coated coverslips of A. fumigatus biofilms. In biofilm adherence assays, incubation of P. aeruginosa with A. fumigatus culture supernatants containing de-N-acetylated GAG augmented the formation of adherent P. aeruginosa biofilms, increasing protection against killing by the antibiotic colistin. Fluorescence microscopy demonstrated incorporation of GAG within P. aeruginosa biofilms, suggesting that GAG can serve as an alternate biofilm exopolysaccharide for this bacterium. In contrast, Pel-containing bacterial culture supernatants only augmented the formation of adherent A. fumigatus biofilms when antifungal inhibitory molecules were removed. This study demonstrates biofilm interaction via exopolysaccharides as a potential mechanism of co-operation between these organisms in chronic lung disease

    The Cluster Mass Function from Early SDSS Data: Cosmological Implications

    The mass function of clusters of galaxies is determined from 400 deg^2 of early commissioning imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey; ~300 clusters in the redshift range z = 0.1 - 0.2 are used. Clusters are selected using two independent selection methods: a Matched Filter and a red-sequence color magnitude technique. The two methods yield consistent results. The cluster mass function is compared with large-scale cosmological simulations. We find a best-fit cluster normalization relation of sigma_8*omega_m^0.6 = 0.33 +- 0.03 (for 0.1 ~< omega_m ~< 0.4), or equivalently sigma_8 = (0.16/omega_m)^0.6. The amplitude of this relation is significantly lower than the previous canonical value, implying that either omega_m is lower than previously expected (omega_m = 0.16 if sigma_8 = 1) or sigma_8 is lower than expected (sigma_8 = 0.7 if omega_m = 0.3). The best-fit mass function parameters are omega_m = 0.19 (+0.08,-0.07) and sigma_8 = 0.9 (+0.3,-0.2).     Balloon dilation of mitral stenosis in adult patients: Postmortem and percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty studies

    Preliminary reports have documented the utility of percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty of the mitral valve in adult patients with mitral stenosis, but the mechanism of successful valve dilation and the effect of mitral valvuloplasty on cardiac performance have not been studied in detail. Accordingly, mitral valvuloplasty was performed in five postmortem specimens and in 18 adult patients with rheumatic mitral stenosis, using either one (25 mm) or two (18 and 20 mm) dilation balloons. Postmortem balloon dilation resulted in increased valve orifice area in all five postmortem specimens, secondary to separation of fused commissures and fracture of nodular calcium within the mitral leaflets. In no case did balloon dilation result in tearing of valve leaflets, disruption of the mitral ring or liberation of potentially embolic debris.Percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty in 18 patients with severe mitral stenosis (including 9 with a heavily calcified valve) resulted in an increase in cardiac output (4.3 ± 1.1 to 5.1 ± 1.5 liters/min, p < 0.01) and mitral valve area (0.9 ± 0.2 to 1.6 ± 0.4 cm2, p < 0.0001), and a decrease in mean mitral pressure gradient (15 ± 5 to 9 ± 4 mm Hg, p < 0.0001), pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (23 ± 7 to 18 ± 7 mm Hg, p < 0.0001) and mean pulmonary artery pressure (36 ± 12 to 33 ± 12 mm Hg, p < 0.01). Left ventriculography before and after valvuloplasty in 14 of the 18 patients showed a mild (≤1 +) increase in mitral regurgitation in five patients and no change in the remainder. Embolic phenomena were not observed in any patient.Serial radionuclide ventriculography showed an increase in left ventricular peak filling rate (2.20 ± 1.20 to 2.50 ± 1.20 end-diastolic volumes per second [EDV/s], p < 0.05). Serial echocardiography/phonocardiography showed improvement in mitral valve excursion (11 ± 6 to 14 ± 6 mm, p < 0.001), mitral EF slope (7 ± 4 to 13 ± 5, p < 0.001), left atrial diameter (5.7 ± 0.9 to 5.3 ± 0.8 cm, p < 0.001), S2-opening snap interval (0.07 ± 0.03 to 0.08 ± 0.02 second, p < 0.02) and mitral valve area (0.9 ± 0.2 to 1.5 ± 0.4 cm2, p < 0.0001). All patients were discharged from the hospital with de- creased symptoms after valvuloplasty.It is concluded that percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty can be performed in adult patients with mitral stenosis, including patients with calcific disease, and can result in significant improvement in valvular function.
