Combining frequency and time domain approaches to systems with multiple spike train input and output
A frequency domain approach and a time domain approach have been combined in an investigation of the behaviour of the primary and secondary endings of an isolated muscle spindle in response to the activity of two static fusimotor axons when the parent muscle is held at a fixed length and when it is subjected to random length changes. The frequency domain analysis has an associated error process which provides a measure of how well the input processes can be used to predict the output processes and is also used to
specify how the interactions between the recorded processes
contribute to this error. Without assuming stationarity of the input, the time domain approach uses a sequence of probability models of increasing complexity in which the number of input processes to the model is progressively increased. This feature of the time domain approach was used to identify a preferred direction of interaction between the processes underlying the generation of the activity of the primary and secondary endings. In the presence of fusimotor activity and dynamic length changes imposed on the muscle, it was shown that the activity of the primary and secondary endings carried different information about the effects of the inputs imposed on the muscle spindle. The results presented in this work emphasise that the analysis of the behaviour of complex
systems benefits from a combination of frequency and time
domain methods
Notes on Operator Equations of Supercurrent Multiplets and the Anomaly Puzzle in Supersymmetric Field Theories
Recently, Komargodski and Seiberg have proposed a new type of supercurrent
multiplet which contains the energy-momentum tensor and the supersymmetry
current consistently. In this paper we study quantum properties of the
supercurrent in renormalizable field theories. We point out that the new
supercurrent gives a quite simple resolution to the classic problem, called the
anomaly puzzle, that the Adler-Bardeen theorem applied to an R-symmetry current
is inconsistent with all order corrections to functions. We propose an
operator equation for the supercurrent in all orders of perturbation theory,
and then perform several consistency checks of the equation. The operator
equation we propose is consisitent with the one proposed by Shifman and
Vainshtein, if we take some care in interpreting the meaning of non-conserved
currents.Comment: 28 pages; v2:clarifications and references added, some minor change
The Weak Gravity Conjecture and the Viscosity Bound with Six-Derivative Corrections
The weak gravity conjecture and the shear viscosity to entropy density bound
place constraints on low energy effective field theories that may help to
distinguish which theories can be UV completed. Recently, there have been
suggestions of a possible correlation between the two constraints. In some
interesting cases, the behavior was precisely such that the conjectures were
mutually exclusive. Motivated by these works, we study the mass to charge and
shear viscosity to entropy density ratios for charged AdS5 black branes, which
are holographically dual to four-dimensional CFTs at finite temperature. We
study a family of four-derivative and six-derivative perturbative corrections
to these backgrounds. We identify the region in parameter space where the two
constraints are satisfied and in particular find that the inclusion of the
next-to-leading perturbative correction introduces wider possibilities for the
satisfaction of both constraints.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures, v2: published version, refs added, minor

Delayed union of femoral fractures in older rats:decreased gene expression
BACKGROUND: Fracture healing slows with age. While 6-week-old rats regain normal bone biomechanics at 4 weeks after fracture, one-year-old rats require more than 26 weeks. The possible role of altered mRNA gene expression in this delayed union was studied. Closed mid-shaft femoral fractures were induced followed by euthanasia at 0 time (unfractured) or at 1, 2, 4 or 6 weeks after fracture in 6-week-old and 12-15-month-old Sprague-Dawley female rats. mRNA levels were measured for osteocalcin, type I collagen Ī±1, type II collagen, bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2, BMP-4 and the type IA BMP receptor. RESULTS: For all of the genes studied, the mRNA levels increased in both age groups to a peak at one to two weeks after fracture. All gene expression levels decreased to very low or undetectable levels at four and six weeks after fracture for both age groups. At four weeks after fracture, the younger rats were healed radiographically, but not the older rats. CONCLUSIONS: (1) All genes studied were up-regulated by fracture in both age groups. Thus, the failure of the older rats to heal promptly was not due to the lack of expression of any of the studied genes. (2) The return of the mRNA gene expression to baseline values in the older rats prior to healing may contribute to their delayed union. (3) No genes were overly up-regulated in the older rats. The slower healing response of the older rats did not stimulate a negative-feedback increase in the mRNA expression of stimulatory cytokines
The Regge Limit for Green Functions in Conformal Field Theory
We define a Regge limit for off-shell Green functions in quantum field
theory, and study it in the particular case of conformal field theories (CFT).
Our limit differs from that defined in arXiv:0801.3002, the latter being only a
particular corner of the Regge regime. By studying the limit for free CFTs, we
are able to reproduce the Low-Nussinov, BFKL approach to the pomeron at weak
coupling. The dominance of Feynman graphs where only two high momentum lines
are exchanged in the t-channel, follows simply from the free field analysis. We
can then define the BFKL kernel in terms of the two point function of a simple
light-like bilocal operator. We also include a brief discussion of the gravity
dual predictions for the Regge limit at strong coupling.Comment: 23 pages 2 figures, v2: Clarification of relation of the Regge limit

Holographic current correlators at finite coupling and scattering off a supersymmetric plasma
By studying the effect of the order(\alpha'^3) string theory corrections to
type IIB supergravity, including those corrections involving the Ramond-Ramond
five-form field strength, we obtain the corrected equations of motion of an
Abelian perturbation of the AdS_5-Schwarzschild black hole. We then use the
gauge theory/string theory duality to examine the coupling-constant dependence
of vector current correlators associated to a gauged U(1) sub-group of the
global R-symmetry group of strongly-coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills
theory at finite temperature. The corrections induce a set of higher-derivative
operators for the U(1) gauge field, but their effect is highly suppressed. We
thus find that the order(\alpha'^3) corrections affect the vector correlators
only indirectly, through the corrected metric. We apply our results to
investigate scattering off a supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma at low and high
energy. In the latter regime, where Deep Inelastic Scattering is expected to
occur, we find an enhancement of the plasma structure functions in comparison
with the infinite 't Hooft coupling result.Comment: 38 pages, 6 figures, minor clarifications added, typos corrected,

KamLAND Sensitivity to Neutrinos from Pre-Supernova Stars
In the late stages of nuclear burning for massive stars (M>8~M_{\sun}), the
production of neutrino-antineutrino pairs through various processes becomes the
dominant stellar cooling mechanism. As the star evolves, the energy of these
neutrinos increases and in the days preceding the supernova a significant
fraction of emitted electron anti-neutrinos exceeds the energy threshold for
inverse beta decay on free hydrogen. This is the golden channel for liquid
scintillator detectors because the coincidence signature allows for significant
reductions in background signals. We find that the kiloton-scale liquid
scintillator detector KamLAND can detect these pre-supernova neutrinos from a
star with a mass of 25~M_{\sun} at a distance less than 690~pc with 3
significance before the supernova. This limit is dependent on the neutrino mass
ordering and background levels. KamLAND takes data continuously and can provide
a supernova alert to the community.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, 1 tabl
Holographic studies of quasi-topological gravity
Quasi-topological gravity is a new gravitational theory including
curvature-cubed interactions and for which exact black hole solutions were
constructed. In a holographic framework, classical quasi-topological gravity
can be thought to be dual to the large limit of some non-supersymmetric
but conformal gauge theory. We establish various elements of the AdS/CFT
dictionary for this duality. This allows us to infer physical constraints on
the couplings in the gravitational theory. Further we use holography to
investigate hydrodynamic aspects of the dual gauge theory. In particular, we
find that the minimum value of the shear-viscosity-to-entropy-density ratio for
this model is .Comment: 45 pages, 6 figures. v2: References adde
Plasma photoemission from string theory
Leading 't Hooft coupling corrections to the photoemission rate of the planar
limit of a strongly-coupled {\cal {N}}=4 SYM plasma are investigated using the
gauge/string duality. We consider the full order \alpha'^3 type IIB string
theory corrections to the supergravity action, including higher order terms
with the Ramond-Ramond five-form field strength. We extend our previous results
presented in arXiv:1110.0526. Photoemission rates depend on the 't Hooft
coupling, and their curves suggest an interpolating behaviour from strong
towards weak coupling regimes. Their slopes at zero light-like momentum give
the electrical conductivity as a function of the 't Hooft coupling, in full
agreement with our previous results of arXiv:1108.6306. Furthermore, we also
study the effect of corrections beyond the large N limit.Comment: 36 pages, 5 figures, paragraph added in the conclusions, references
