    Clastic injectites, internal structures and flow regime during injection: The Sea Lion Injectite System, North Falkland Basin

    This paper details and describes a suite of 143 sub‐seismic‐scale clastic injectites encountered within the early Cretaceous, early post‐rift of the deep‐lacustrine North Falkland Basin. The injectites, referred to here as the Sea Lion Injectite System, are encountered below, above and in between the hydrocarbon‐bearing, deep‐lacustrine turbidite sandstones of the Bleaker 15, Sea Lion North, Sea Lion, Casper and Beverley fans. Sedimentary structures are documented within the injectites including: planar laminations, mud‐clast imbrication and clast alignment. Clasts align along centimetre‐scale foresets formed through ripple‐scale bedform migration in a hydraulically‐open fracture. The style of flow within the injectite system is interpreted as initially through fluid turbulence during an open fracture phase, which was followed by a later stage where laminar flow dominated, most likely during the closing phase of the fracture system. The host rocks display evidence for ductile deformation, which along with ptygmatic folding of dykes and internally injected mud‐clasts, suggests a period of injection into relatively uncompacted sediments. Evidence for brittle fracturing, in the form of stepped margins may be indicative of a separate phase of emplacement into more‐compacted sediments. This variability in deformation styles is related to multi‐phased injection episodes into host strata at different stages of consolidation and lithification at shallow burial depths. Injectites have been identified in four stratigraphic groupings: above the Bleaker 15 Fan and within/above the Sea Lion North Fan; within the hydrocarbon‐bearing Sea Lion Fan; overlying the Sea Lion Fan; and above/below the hydrocarbon‐bearing Casper and Beverley fans. This spatial association with the hydrocarbon‐bearing fans of the North Falkland Basin is important, considering the ability of injectite networks to form effective fluid‐flow conduits in the subsurface. Consequently, the findings of this study will improve the characterization of sub‐seismic scale injectites (and therefore fluid conduits) within otherwise impermeable strata

    Effects of salt water on the ballistic protective performance of bullet-resistant body armour

    Bullet-resistant body armour is used by law enforcement agencies and military personnel worldwide, often in inclement weather. Some fibre types used in body armour perform poorly when wet, resulting in a reduced level of protection; this is why most body armour protective elements are water-repellent treated and/or protected by a water-resistant cover. Some of the users operate in the maritime environment. The effect of salt water on body armour performance has not been previously reported. In this work the effect of soaking body armour in salt water and exposing body armour for up to 10 soaking and drying cycles in salt water was investigated. The effectiveness of the water-resistant cover was investigated by considering three cover conditions: (i) intact, (ii) cut and (iii) removed. Wet armour was heavier and provided significantly less protection from 9 mm Luger FMJ ammunition when compared to not-exposed armour irrespective of cover condition. A degradation in performance of armours exposed to soaking and drying cycles was noted, but this was similar across all regimes considered (one, three, five and ten cycles) and not as great as for wet armours

    Translation of experimental cardioprotective capability of P2Y(12) inhibitors into clinical outcome in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction

    We studied the translational cardioprotective potential of P2Y12 inhibitors against acute myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) in an animal model of acute myocardial infarction and in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI). P2Y12 inhibitors may have pleiotropic effects to induce cardioprotection against acute myocardial IRI beyond their inhibitory effects on platelet aggregation. We compared the cardioprotective effects of clopidogrel, prasugrel, and ticagrelor on infarct size in an in vivo rat model of acute myocardial IRI, and investigated the effects of the P2Y12 inhibitors on enzymatic infarct size (48-h area-under-the-curve (AUC) troponin T release) and clinical outcomes in a retrospective study of STEMI patients from the CONDI-2/ERIC-PPCI trial using propensity score analyses. Loading with ticagrelor in rats reduced infarct size after acute myocardial IRI compared to controls (37 ± 11% vs 52 ± 8%, p  0.99 and 49 ± 9%, p > 0.99, respectively). Correspondingly, troponin release was reduced in STEMI patients treated with ticagrelor compared to clopidogrel (adjusted 48-h AUC ratio: 0.67, 95% CI 0.47–0.94). Compared to clopidogrel, the composite endpoint of cardiac death or hospitalization for heart failure within 12 months was reduced in STEMI patients loaded with ticagrelor (HR 0.63; 95% CI 0.42–0.94) but not prasugrel (HR 0.84, 95% CI 0.43–1.63), prior to PPCI. Major adverse cardiovascular events did not differ between clopidogrel, ticagrelor, or prasugrel. The cardioprotective effects of ticagrelor in reducing infarct size may contribute to the clinical benefit observed in STEMI patients undergoing PPCI

    Hybrid event bed character and distribution in the context of ancient deep‐lacustrine fan models

    Hybrid event beds are texturally and compositionally-diverse deposits preserved within deepwater settings. They are deposited by flows exhibiting ‘mixed behaviour’, forming complex successions of sandstone and mudstone, which are often challenging to predict. Hybrid event beds are documented in deep-marine settings, where they have been thoroughly characterized, and are well-known as effective fluid transmissibility barriers and baffles in reservoirs. By comparison, there are far-fewer studies of hybrid event beds from deep-lacustrine settings, where their character and distribution remains relatively under-explored. In order to provide insights into these deposits, this study presents the detailed analysis of three-dimensional seismic data, wireline logs and core from a series of ancient deep-lacustrine fan systems in the North Falkland Basin. Results confirm that deep-lacustrine hybrid event beds comprise the same idealized sequence of the ‘H1–H5’ divisions. However, in this study H3 ‘debrite’ units can be sub-divided into ‘H3a–H3c’, based on: sharp or erosional intra-H3 contacts, bulk lithology, mud-content and discrete sedimentary textures. This study interprets the H3a–H3c sub-units as the products of multiple flow components formed through significant rearward longitudinal flow transformation processes, during the emplacement of a single hybrid event bed. Hybrid event beds are observed within lobe fringes, where flow types, energies, and transport mechanisms diversify as a result of flow transformation. The temporal context of hybrid event bed occurrences is considered in relation to stages of fan evolution, including: the Initiation; Growth (I); Growth (II); By-pass; Abandonment; and Termination phases. Hybrid event beds are mainly found in either the initiation phase where flow interaction and erosion of initial substrates promoted mixed flow behaviour, or in the abandonment phase as facies belt retreated landward. The results of this study have important implications in terms of flow processes of hybrid event bed emplacement, in particular sub-division of the H3 unit, as well as the prediction of hybrid event bed occurrence and character within ancient deep-lacustrine fan settings, in-general

    Control of Mycobacterium bovis infection in two sika deer herds in Ireland

    In a number of countries, tuberculosis (due to infection with Mycobacterium bovis) is a significant health problem of captive deer. This paper describes outbreaks of bovine tuberculosis in sika deer (Cervus nippon) on two farms in Ireland and the methods used to control the disease. On Farm A, infection was first detected during 1993. The infection was eradicated using a programme of test and removal, in association with segregation of young animals. A second outbreak (also due to infection with M. bovis, but a different RFLP profile) was detected in 2002. In the latter outbreak, infection was particularly prevalent in two groups of young deer. M. bovis with the same RFLP profile was also isolated in a badger found dead on the farm. Control was achieved by test and removal in association with herd management changes. In Herd B, infection was first detected in 1995, and subsequently eradicated using test and removal alone. In Herd A, re-infection remains an ongoing risk. Control rather than eradication of infection may more realistic in the short-to medium-term

    Radiological Decision Aid to determine suitability for medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty: development and preliminary validation

    Aims: An evidence-based radiographic Decision Aid for meniscal-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) has been developed and this study investigates its performance at an independent centre. Patients: and Methods Pre-operative radiographs, including stress views, from a consecutive cohort of 550 knees undergoing arthroplasty (UKA or total knee arthroplasty; TKA) by a single-surgeon were assessed. Suitability for UKA was determined using the Decision Aid, with the assessor blinded to treatment received, and compared with actual treatment received, which was determined by an experienced UKA surgeon based on history, examination, radiographic assessment including stress radiographs, and intra-operative assessment in line with the recommended indications as described in the literature. Results: The sensitivity and specificity of the Decision Aid was 92% and 88%, respectively. Excluding knees where a clear pre-operative plan was made to perform TKA, i.e. patient request, the sensitivity was 93% and specificity 96%. The false-positive rate was low (2.4%) with all affected patients readily identifiable during joint inspection at surgery. In patients meeting Decision Aid criteria and receiving UKA, the five-year survival was 99% (95% confidence intervals (CI) 97 to 100). The false negatives (3.5%), who received UKA but did not meet the criteria, had significantly worse functional outcomes (flexion p < 0.001, American Knee Society Score - Functional p < 0.001, University of California Los Angeles score p = 0.04), and lower implant survival of 93.1% (95% CI 77.6 to 100). Conclusion: The radiographic Decision Aid safely and reliably identifies appropriate patients for meniscal-bearing UKA and achieves good results in this population. The widespread use of the Decision Aid should improve the results of UKA

    Ortho-para transition in molecular hydrogen

    The radiative ortho-para transition in the molecular hydrogen is studied. This highly forbidden transition is very sensitive to relativistic and subtle nonadiabatic effects. Our result for the transition rate in the ground vibrational level \Gamma(J=1\to J=0) = 6.20(62)\cdot 10^{-14} \iyr is significantly lower in comparison to all the previous approximate calculations. Experimental detection of such a weak line by observation of, for example, the cold interstellar molecular hydrogen is at present unlikely.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    We review a number of topics germane to higher-dimensional solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates. For dark solitons, we discuss dark band and planar solitons; ring dark solitons and spherical shell solitons; solitary waves in restricted geometries; vortex rings and rarefaction pulses; and multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates.     Gross-Neveu Models, Nonlinear Dirac Equations, Surfaces and Strings

    Recent studies of the thermodynamic phase diagrams of the Gross-Neveu model (GN2), and its chiral cousin, the NJL2 model, have shown that there are phases with inhomogeneous crystalline condensates. These (static) condensates can be found analytically because the relevant Hartree-Fock and gap equations can be reduced to the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation, whose deformations are governed by the mKdV and AKNS integrable hierarchies, respectively. Recently, Thies et al have shown that time-dependent Hartree-Fock solutions describing baryon scattering in the massless GN2 model satisfy the Sinh-Gordon equation, and can be mapped directly to classical string solutions in AdS3. Here we propose a geometric perspective for this result, based on the generalized Weierstrass spinor representation for the embedding of 2d surfaces into 3d spaces, which explains why these well-known integrable systems underlie these various Gross-Neveu gap equations, and why there should be a connection to classical string theory solutions. This geometric viewpoint may be useful for higher dimensional models, where the relevant integrable hierarchies include the Davey-Stewartson and Novikov-Veselov systems.Comment: 27 pages, 1 figur
