scheduled synchronisation based on a mesoscopic flow model with speed dispersion
Abstract This paper proposes a method for netwok signal setting design, based on enhacements of an existing coordination method aiming: 1) to extend the existing approach in order to address the Traffic Control through Scheduled Synchronisation (i.e 'one step' optimisation of stage matrix, green timings, and node offsets ); 2) to extend the considered Mesoscopic Traffic Flow model (TRAFFMED) to the vehicle platoon speed dispersion; 3) to build up a solution method suitable for both off-line and on-line applications. The proposed optimisation method is an application of the Simulated Annealing meta-heuristic. Some numerical applications are proposed, specifically analysing 'two step' optimisation (synchronisation), and'one step' optimisation (scheduled synchronisation), for off-line (pre-timed strategy) and on-line applications (on-line computation strategy). A grid network was considered as case study and the effectiveness of the proposed strategies were evaluated by comparing the obtained results with those computed through commercial (benchmark) and in-house codes
ONE-TROCAR VIDEO-ASSISTED STRIPPING TECHNIQUE FOR USE IN THE TREATMENT OF LARGE OVARIAN CYSTS IN INFANTS
Background
Management of ovarian cysts in infants is controversial; it can be conservative or surgical, and the management is determined by the cyst''s size and sonographic features.
Methods
A surgical approach using a 10-mm umbilically placed operative laparoscope was taken in 3 female infants with antenatally diagnosed large, simple ovarian cysts. The contents of the cysts were partially aspirated and the cyst walls were stripped off the remaining ovarian parenchyma. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were recorded.
Conclusions
The one-trocar video-assisted stripping technique for large ovarian cysts in infants appears to be an ovarian-tissue-preserving procedure, and it sidesteps the disadvantages of large scars and formation of adhesions
EChO Payload electronics architecture and SW design
EChO is a three-modules (VNIR, SWIR, MWIR), highly integrated spectrometer,
covering the wavelength range from 0.55 m, to 11.0 m. The baseline
design includes the goal wavelength extension to 0.4 m while an optional
LWIR module extends the range to the goal wavelength of 16.0 m.
An Instrument Control Unit (ICU) is foreseen as the main electronic subsystem
interfacing the spacecraft and collecting data from all the payload
spectrometers modules. ICU is in charge of two main tasks: the overall payload
control (Instrument Control Function) and the housekeepings and scientific data
digital processing (Data Processing Function), including the lossless
compression prior to store the science data to the Solid State Mass Memory of
the Spacecraft. These two main tasks are accomplished thanks to the Payload On

Chlorinative stress in age-related diseases: A literature review
Aging is an agglomerate of biological long-lasting processes that result being inevitable. Main actors in this scenario are both long-term inflammation and oxidative stress. It has been proved that oxidative stress induce alteration in proteins and this fact itself is critically important in the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to diseases typical of aging. Among reactive species, chlorine ones such as hypochlorous acid (HOCl) are cytotoxic oxidants produced by activated neutrophils during chronic inflammation processes. HOCl can also cause damages by reacting with biological molecules. HOCl is generated by myeloperoxidase (MPO) and augmented serum levels of MPO have been described in acute and chronic inflammatory conditions in cardiovascular patients and has been implicated in many inflammatory diseases such as atherosclerosis, neurodegenerative conditions, and some cancers. Due to these data, we decided to conduct an up-to-date review evaluating chlorinative stress effects on every age-related disease linked; potential anti-oxidant countermeasures were also assessed. Results obtained associated HOCl generation to the aging processes and confirmed its connection with diseases like neurodegenerative and cardiovascular pathologies, atherosclerosis and cancer; chlorination was mainly linked to diseases where molecular (protein) alteration constitute the major suspected cause: i.e. inflammation, tissue lesions, DNA damages, apoptosis and oxidative stress itself. According data collected, a healthy lifestyle together with some dietary suggestion and/or the administration of nutracetical antioxidant integrators could balance the effects of chlorinative stress and, in some cases, slow down or prevent the onset of age-releated diseases
Ileocecal duplication cysts: Is the loss of the valve always necessary?
Ileocecal (IC) duplication cysts are enteric duplications located at the IC junction, not clearly identified in all the published series. The reported treatment is IC resection and ileocolic anastomosis. It is well known that the loss of the IC valve has several adverse effects. This study is aimed at demonstrating that cyst removal together with the common ileal wall and following enterorrhapy is possible, safe, and effective in preserving the IC region.
Methods
Medical records of 3 patients who underwent surgery for IC duplication between 2003 and 2013 were retrospectively reviewed evaluating follow-up results.
Results
All patients had an antenatal diagnosis of intrabdominal cystic mass. In two cases associated malformations were reported. The lesions presented at newborn age with intermittent small bowel obstruction and required removal. No patients underwent IC resection. The diagnosis of duplication cyst was confirmed by histo-pathologic examination. The postoperative course was uneventful, even in the long-term follow-up
The Visible and Near Infrared module of EChO
The Visible and Near Infrared (VNIR) is one of the modules of EChO, the
Exoplanets Characterization Observatory proposed to ESA for an M-class mission.
EChO is aimed to observe planets while transiting by their suns. Then the
instrument had to be designed to assure a high efficiency over the whole
spectral range. In fact, it has to be able to observe stars with an apparent
magnitude Mv= 9-12 and to see contrasts of the order of 10-4 - 10-5 necessary
to reveal the characteristics of the atmospheres of the exoplanets under
investigation. VNIR is a spectrometer in a cross-dispersed configuration,
covering the 0.4-2.5 micron spectral range with a resolving power of about 330
and a field of view of 2 arcsec. It is functionally split into two channels
respectively working in the 0.4-1 and 1.0-2.5 micron spectral ranges. Such a
solution is imposed by the fact the light at short wavelengths has to be shared
with the EChO Fine Guiding System (FGS) devoted to the pointing of the stars
under observation. The spectrometer makes use of a HgCdTe detector of 512 by
512 pixels, 18 micron pitch and working at a temperature of 45K as the entire
VNIR optical bench. The instrument has been interfaced to the telescope optics
by two optical fibers, one per channel, to assure an easier coupling and an
easier colocation of the instrument inside the EChO optical bench.Comment: 26 page
Budesonide increases TLR4 and TLR2 expression in Treg lymphocytes of allergic asthmatics
Background: Reduced innate immunity responses as well as reduced T regulatory activities characterise bronchial asthma. Objectives: In this study the effect of budesonide on the expression of TLR4 and TLR2 in T regulatory lymphocyte sub-population was assessed. Methods: TLR4 and TLR2 expression in total peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), in CD4+/CD25+ and in CD4+/CD25- was evaluated, by flow cytometric analysis, in mild intermittent asthmatics (n = 14) and in controls (n = 11). The in vitro effects of budesonide in modulating: TLR4 and TLR2 expression in controls and in asthmatics; IL-10 expression and cytokine release (IL-6 and TNF-\u3b1 selected by a multiplex assay) in asthmatics were also explored. Results: TLR4 and TLR2 were reduced in total PBMC from asthmatics in comparison to PBMC from controls. CD4+CD25+ cells expressed at higher extent TLR2 and TLR4 in comparison to CD4+CD25- cells. Budesonide was able to increase the expression of TLR4, TLR2 and IL-10 in CD4+/CD25highly+ cells from asthmatics. TLR4 ligand, LPS induced Foxp3 expression. Budesonide was also able to reduce the release of IL-6 and TNF-\u3b1 by PBMC of asthmatics. Conclusions: Budesonide potentiates the activity of Treg by increasing TLR4, TLR2 and IL-10 expression. This event is associated to the decreased release of IL-6 and TNF-\u3b1 in PBMC treated with budesonide. These findings shed light on new mechanisms by which corticosteroids, drugs widely used for the clinical management of bronchial asthma, control T lymphocyte activation
Emotional expression and coping style in female breast cancer.
Background: The study of the relationship of emotional status and tumor etiology has been investigated in order to
elaborate a multifactorial model able to provide an answer integrating the different disciplines on cancer. The aim of
this work is to investigate the knowledge on the alexithymia construct, exploring the presence of such trait in women
affected by mammary carcinoma and analyzing the used coping strategies. The study has also examined personal
thoughts related to event control (locus of control).
Method: The Toronto Alexithymia Scale, Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced, and Locus of Control
questionnaires were administered to a group of 86 women aged 31\u201355 years (mean = 43.7; SD 6.57)\u2014experimental
group (N = 44): women with breast cancer diagnosed in the last 6 months; control group (N = 42): women without
oncologic pathology, referred at the aforementioned institutions to undergo a breast check-up.
Results: According to our hypothesis and literature data, a significant presence of alexithymic subjects (36.4% versus
2.4%; v2 = 20.9; P < 0.0001) and a tendency to adopt coping strategies not focused on the problem were reported
among women with mammary carcinoma. This causes incapability to act in order to actively contrast pathology-linked
stress or to lower the effects.
Conclusion: Our results indicate that the tendency to repress one\u2019s emotions is associated to some general
schemes of reaction to stress which, when used in a dysfunctional manner (such as the attempt to ignore how
threatening an event is), are maladaptive in the end
Study of coupling loss on bi-columnar BSCCO/Ag tapes by a.c. susceptibility measurements
Coupling losses were studied in composite tapes containing superconducting
material in the form of two separate stacks of densely packed filaments
embedded in a metallic matrix of Ag or Ag alloy. This kind of sample geometry
is quite favorable for studying the coupling currents and in particular the
role of superconducting bridges between filaments. By using a.c. susceptibility
technique, the electromagnetic losses as function of a.c. magnetic field
amplitude and frequency were measured at the temperature T = 77 K for two tapes
with different matrix composition. The length of samples was varied by
subsequent cutting in order to investigate its influence on the dynamics of
magnetic flux penetration. The geometrical factor which takes into
account the demagnetizing effects was established from a.c. susceptibility data
at low amplitudes. Losses vs frequency dependencies have been found to agree
nicely with the theoretical model developed for round multifilamentary wires.
Applying this model, the effective resistivity of the matrix was determined for
each tape, by using only measured quantities. For the tape with pure silver
matrix its value was found to be larger than what predicted by the theory for
given metal resistivity and filamentary architecture. On the contrary, in the
sample with a Ag/Mg alloy matrix, an effective resistivity much lower than
expected was determined. We explain these discrepancies by taking into account
the properties of the electrical contact of the interface between the
superconducting filaments and the normal matrix. In the case of soft matrix of
pure Ag, this is of poor quality, while the properties of alloy matrix seem to
provoke an extensive creation of intergrowths which can be actually observed in
